No one stated that Gibson was "crap".

However, wouldn't it be amazing if North picked up Luke Ball with pick 25?:D

I'm not going to bother trawling through posts, but look out the 'Pick 9 or PSD' thread. It's good for a laugh.

And yes, it would be great if North picked up Ball at 25! :D

Essendon are a 1 man team, stop Watson feeding it out to the fleet footed runners and you stop Essendon. Anyone who even looks like they could be an inside midfielder should be a target for the Bombres

Yet Watson is shit according to everybody on here. Quite amusing really.

You can't blame a clubs supporters for wanting a high pick for a decent player. The club was obviously happy with 25 and 41.:thumbsu:

Luke Ball for Josh Gibson, trade of the decade.:thumbsu:

No matter what happens now, LOL at St Kilda being shafted for nothing!

Its not that Collingwood fans are usually stupid its just they fail to grasp a situation so often that bemuses...

L Ball from day 1 with his manager has been trying to get to Collingwood for more cash - the FACTS are that St Kilda would not/will not even look at offering Ball $1m over 2 yrs......reality is Luke Ball is a talented in/under mid who doesnt kick goals, doesnt kick the ball 40m and can't run...(the club has tried to improve this in his game but I suspect injury has cruelled him). In short - defensively Ball can easily be run off....its why most sides who play us tag Dal/Hayes/Montagna.....not Luke Ball.....he simply doesnt hurt you offensivley.

IF Collingwood wanna pay $1m over 2 for that - I know whose getting shafted....and I suspect that having gotten an AA from Ball in his prime....we've already seen/gotten the best from him. Besides, IMO we've decided to perhaps use some of Balls lofty salary to inject some more speed into our line up with Lovett and I think thats what we lacked more so than another grunt mid.

Bring on David Armitage - who can run and who Ball was gonna struggle to push out of the side in 2010:thumbsu:

That said I wish Ball no malice and hope he gets to the Pies for squillions.....its what they deserve...:D

He was respected and was given chances to play. But there are no free rides because you "play your heart out" - sometimes, you need to impant a game, for a whole game.

Goldsack and 30 is as good as nothing, so happy he went for that. We tried to keep him, he bailed. Such is life.

I think from an outsiders point of view...some players eg Ball and Hudgton provide more than just possessions. Harley is our case in point. We carried him but recognised that this year we NEEDED him. I felt much more comfortable coming into the GF with Zac Dawson out there in place of Max Hudghton. He would have ripped his own heart out in a GF for you guys. Ultimately it is desire that wins GFs as we know from both sides of the coin.
Luke Ball has desire in spades and St Kilda shat on him after destroying his body unnecessarily when he should have been rested a couple of years back.
Thrown out like a puppy a month after Xmas...
Oh..and Pick 30 and Goldsack is actually Pick 30 and Goldsack better than nothing...just saying...

Clarke at 24 should be approaching his prime, Goldy is 22..

The point is, Clarke is our last defender and not a guaranteed selection. Goldsack isn't a clear improvement on him at all. Any Pies fans who say he is aren't basing that on anything done on the football field. There's no guarantee that Goldsack is going to get any better either.

Luke Ball was offered a 3yr deal in July - turfed out a month before Xmas when he walked?

What part of unfair dont you get?

By the way - Dawson earnt his spot in the GF and IMHO wasnt our worst - Hudgton hadnt played since Rd 7......."hearts" one thing...stupid, irrational decisions in GF's is another.

We didnt lose the GF through Ball or Hudgton - 39 inside 50's to 18 at half time provides a clue where we lost the game (and credits where its due - Cats simply made us pay and took their chances kicking 7.1 at one stage).....I think we showed plenty of "heart"......and the FACT your coach acknowledged you got "lucky" in his GF speech says it all..

From my perspective we had our "lucky break" against the Dogs (as did Cats for mine) in the Prelim - simply put we shouldnt ahev won that game.......Ive no poblem admitting that....shame many Geelong fans can't display a similar level of humility/class.

I couldn't care less where Ball ends up playing, as it won't be my club, but I have taken delight today in seeing St Kilda receive nothing for him.

Saints fans can't decide whether Ball is a dud, years past his best and with only a few years of AFL left in him - or a champion clearly not worth a second round pick and a talented young player, who I rate and would happily have at Geelong, in Goldsack.

I think Ball was treated very badly during trade week. Compare it with us and Prismall last year. Geelong offered him a deal, wanted to keep him, but he wanted regular senior opportunities (and presumably more money) elsewhere. Just like Ball. Geelong supporters were largely unhappy with only receiving #39 for him after he only nominated one club to be traded to, but we did the deal to a) treat Prismall with respect and b) get something in return. With #39 we picked up Steve Motlop who I am looking forward to seeing in 2010.

We also gave away a former captain, B&F winner and AA (just like Ball yet again) in King for virtually nothing, to a fellow top 4 side who we ended up squaring off against in a grand final within two years. Once again, this was predominately out of loyalty and respect to King to thank him for his service to the club.

Did St Kilda turn down the Collingwood trade because they didn't think the offer was sufficient, or because they didn't want to strengthen a fellow top 4 side in an area they are severely deficient?

I dont think the following quote leaves anyone guessing where Lyon/Saints rated Ball....

"St Kilda said it was disappointed with Ball's decision, but in effect it forced his hand by painting a less than rosy picture of his prospects at the club.

Unwilling to play for Melbourne and now hoping to dodge it in the draft, Ball had hoped to stay at St Kilda.

But after a meeting with coach Ross Lyon he was left in no doubt about his place in St Kilda's pecking order."

I'm not weighing into the argument about who did or didn't do the right thing. But frankly those Saints fans who say they'd prefer nothing to Goldsack are bad judges. I'm not saying he'd walk into your 22; he's a fringe player at a club with a lesser list. He's still pretty raw, but just played a pretty good final series. frankly if you can't see potential in a young guy who's 6 foot 3, quick, extremely commited to the contest and a pretty good kick, then you have no imagination. I'll be delighted if we get Ball for pick 30, but I would have been disappointed if we got him for the price of pick 30 and Goldsack, which most people are claiming was offered.

Fair enough but as you say...he's fringe at a club with a lessor list and cant crack it for a regular game.....hes not what we need if so.

As opposed to Luke Ball who is a fringe player at your club and significantly down the pecking order according to Ross Lyon?

How did this thread get to so many pages, why is anyone surprised and still so emotive at this news?

He wanted to leave, did not indicate otherwise the past few weeks, and has done so?

It matters not to Luke if the club is to be compensated fairly or not for his departure, his potential club certainly won't give it a thought, why is everyone else bothering their heads over it?

Life goes on at St Kilda, I don't expect any of you to respect and admire our club and it's decisions. Why you should care, that is a Saints supporters job afterall?

If Raph Clarke is in your best 22, then Goldsack would be in there too. Goldsack would be a walk up ahead of him.

Had you had Goldsack and Maxy in the GF as opposed to Dawson and Raph, the result may have been different

Oh yes please god, if only we had Beams or Sidebottom. And there's a reason players last until pick 30 in the draft newbie: CHANCES ARE THEY WILL NEVER MAKE IT.

If sweet FA is what we get then so be it. I think it probably tells you the importance of Luke Ball to the side now that Saints fans aren't exactly slitting their wrists.

I hope that Ball, like Nathan Buckley, gets his just rewards.

umm... james hird anyone?

So says Jon Ralph we must add in the interests of accuracy - the same Jon Ralph whose been exclusively quoting Connors - Balls manager?.

Its a much nicer message "Luke wanted to stay but Ross forced him out" as opposed to Lukes leaving for morwe cash?

Lets remember Connors was quoted early in negotiations saying Collingwood were prepared to offer Ball 500k a year..(nice oincidence now) before he later retracted this and then sent out the spin that Ball was leaving for less cash.....if you believe that.....good luck to you.

Didnt you find it odd that St Kilda's pressor made mention of how the club had acted "appropriately" throughout all negotioations?.....

You join the dots.

You're the one who used the quote as evidence as where the Saints and Lyon rate Ball, not me.
Now it is just a cover for Ball's money grubbing ways? That was a quick change of heart :thumbsu:

Im merely making sure we're balanced in our thinking....;)....the rest you'll decide on the basis of whats suits your Collingwood slant....in the end it will matter little - you'll turn up next season, so will we, you will lose and pay Ball plenty. Thems the facts.:thumbsu:

Well no, these are the facts;
P:209
W: 149
L: 56

To go along with the fact you lost your ex captain, wasted your number 2 pick in the super draft and effectively got nothing in return because you were too stubborn. And at the end of the day, you'll turn up next season and by the end of the year, your pathetic club will still only have 1 premiership.

Thems the facts champ :thumbsu:

Either way Melbourne will take him. They said they'd use anything up to pick 2. They surely wouldn't really but maybe pick 18, or pick 1 in the pre-season.

Yeah, I'd have to think we'd still seriously consider using pick 18 in the ND, if it comes to that...
