Luke Ball's performance against St Kilda

.....sad, but at least he will now get a big fat pay cheque each week, and he will again be regarded as a hero, so he will be happy.
He's just come off a big fat pay cheque hasn't he?
But for the future:

Jack Steven>Armitage>>>Ball.....
Two kids who may or may not develop and who may or may not have injuries. I thought they both showed a bit. Not as much as Ball at a similar stage but there is some talent there. I like a couple of the talls too.

It is all a million miles from your second flag tough which was the point behind your off season. These kids won't win you the flag this year. As for the future, they'll be playing with a largely different list.

From a Collingwood perspective I was happy with Ball & Jolly. Both filled the roles they were recruited for and have already shown two weaknesses have been improved. I was also VERY impressed with Beams who I think will turn out better than Ball, Steven and Armitage.

If Jack was hopeless in getting it, he wouldn't have finished 6th in contested marks in the AFL last year.
Because there are just so many in the way the game is played today... What a stupid arguement. An average of 6 kicks and 5 marks from Anthony last year... (the same as Tippett). Key fowards make the most of the possessions they get, however they don't get a hell of a lot of the ball. When they do, it is gold, which was the point.

That's right. Thanks to Thomas, he was paid way beyond his value.

Lyon put a much tougher challenge in front of him, and a more reasonable performance based contract....he didn't like that, so he walked out and went to a club that would still pay him heaps and laud his play.....irrespective of how good he really is....

When the real games start & the pace hots up, don't look for Luke to help on the defensive side of the game. Was potentially a very good player when he started, but will be a GOP these days.....sad, but at least he will now get a big fat pay cheque each week, and he will again be regarded as a hero, so he will be happy.

Armitage quite a way in front of Steven at this stage and for the future IMO.

Who cares really.

Collingwood had a good hitout in a practice match against a quailty opponent, and incurred no injuries.

Ball and Jolly both played pretty well and added a bit to the Pies line-up that they didnt have last year. Thats all we need to know at this stage.

meh........I saw a near full strenght Pies outfit blown away by kids (oh and N Riewoldt..) with not much left in the tank for when the real stuff starts......:thumbsu:

I think he will do the job he was recruited for. I never thought he would be a 40 possession game winner elite star. Just a bard honest player which is what collingwood need.

Exactly. he will defo be an asset. I mean shit how many small goal kickers does collingwood need?? Not his job to kick goals just to get the ball. Which he'll do.

Id say its win win but really we didnt get anything for him so ....:(

Still Armitage and Steven could've fallen away and then we'd be screwed forutnetly they look good.:thumbsu:

Be careful Bart, you'll be excommunicated with talk like that.

Blown away by a point after your opponents wasted seven extra shots on goal.

Ok then. Well done on that.

Its a preaseason game, FFS. All that anybody should care about is that their side got a good hitout. And it was a reasonably good standard of game. Lyon and Malthouse should both walk away reasonably pleased.

I laughed. :D

Tens of thousands of posts by Collingwood supporters - including hundreds from yourself - would suggest plenty.

Personally I reckon by late August, most Collingwood supporters will return to their pre September 2009 view on Ball.

That should be fun. :)

Fair point JD, a lot of people seem to care. Especially yourself.

Personally, I dont,. It was a NAB Cup, ffs. He didnt make an idiot of himself and he racked up a few stats. (His goals per game average is already superior at Collingwood than it was at StKilda!!!) Thats all you need to do in the preseason.

Ball was recruited to fill a need in the clearance and contested ball situations. Nobody expects him to be a Brownlow Medallist. If his mere presence keeps jets like Pendlebury out of the heavy traffic then he's done his job.

The best thing about Friday night's game is that he's got the StKilda game out of the way and both sides can move on.

Recent history suggests there is a trend of wasting shots against the Saints.

You're about the result, one way or the other it didn't really matter, what did matter were the intangibles such as game plan. The pies seem to have added 2 new players to the existing game plan resulting in shots from the boundary line. I did have a chuckle to myself when Sam Fisher ran unmolested into the forward line to assist with 2 of the last 3 Saints goals, though in fairness Leigh Brown seemed to be doing the same in our forward line most of the night.

It was a good hit out and Ball should allow Pendles more outside space and Jolly should allow Fraser to at worst act as a forward line decoy.

As mentioned elsewhere Cloke was a highlight, if he could limit himself to avoid taking marks on the boundary and visualise a target 55m through the goals he will be in for a big season.

LOL. And to think you probably believe you don't care.

Seriously, it was a bloody practice match.

Personally I reckon it was embarrassing how Collingwood (coaches, players, supporters) attempted to use this game to further the pissing contest. The reaction to Ball was quite pathetic - even more when a full strength team loses to a team playing a practice match.

Lets see how Ball and his new team-mates stand up when the pressure is actually on. Recent history indicates both Ball and his new team-mates will go missing.

you mean like how ball went missing in last year's grand final? oh wait, how many possies was it in about 50% of game time? or like how coll went missing in the semi final v crows when they were 5 goals down in a low scoring affair? oh hang on......just ridiculous unfounded comments

if anyone went missing when the pressure was on last year it was the saints as a whole on GF day. every chance to win it but floundered in the last quarter when the kitchen was at its hottest

Shots from the boundary line?

What game were you watching?

We had 1 shot from memory on the boundary and that was a goal from Travis Cloke deep in the pocket. Everything else was extremely gettable.

Davis missed an absolute sitter 20m slight angle, Swan running into an open goal and opting to go for the dribble rather than take a few extra steps and make it a certainty too. Cloke missed shots from about 40-45m, slight angles too (positive though is he was taking shots within range, rather than on the wing). You can also add a near certainty by Medhurst in the first qtr that was taken away by the umpire for an "incident" off the ball apparantly against Didak too.

It was a pre-season hit-out with a result that could have gone either way. However, it would have been a comfortable victory for Collingwood had they converted what were bread and butter chances.

This quote was made a night before last years grand final when talking about who is going to win the norm smith
Point?

I'd have loved to have seen Raph Clarke win it too.

Never have I questioned Ball's balls. For that reason I'd like to have seen him win it (and the fact had Luke played that sort of game we'd now be Premiers).

a full strength team

LOL!
practice match

Yep... exactly.

February is for blowing out cobwebs. Just ask the Cats and Crows. But of course, Collingwood was the only side taking it seriously, right Jeff? And the Saints were taking it the least seriously, right Jeff?

Let's hear it for the February champions.

LOL. Friday didn't teach you anything re: quantity vs quality?

FWIW, Luke went missing when his coach had the nerve to force him to address some of the short-comings in his game. Rather than be a man - like Milne and Dal Santo were - Luke cracked the sads and took the easy option. Should fit in well with Didak, Medhurst, Thomas, Davis, etc.
