You have been sprouting around lately about how Hodge has 'probably never been in the top 10-20 players in the game.'

Just interested to hear if you've been watching footy for that long? Hodge was a top 10 player in the game from 2007-10, and in 2010 was one of the best players in the AFL, (top 5 at least that year) it's a real shame his 2009 was crippled by injury because i personally believe that could have almost been his best year if fit (personally not team wise as Hawthorn were wrecked with injury just like Hodgey)

But overall your claim about Hodge never being in the top 10-20 players in the game is quite frankly laughable.
Wouldn't say the bolded at all (the at least part, could be debated). But yeah, I'll admit I think I was wrong on the top 10-20 call and underrated Hodge a bit. However, I still don't see how you can rate him above Judd, who has really been in the top few this decade.

Do you remember Hodge's 2010 at all?

Hodge is great if you want someone to play behind the ball and push into the midfield like Burgoyne and Goddard.

Tough gig.

:thumbsu:
Judd has been the better player but your wording is wrong. Hodge has him for skill. Much better user of the footy. Judd more dynamic with his running and ability to burst from congestion.
But...

Hodge passing to Wingard and turning it over for a goal this year wasn't a great example of a player who supposedly has Judd for skill.

Judd has had more uncharacteristic turnovers than any bloke to ever play the game if you want to be a smart arse.

You could almost call them characteristic.

Judd by a mile... look Hodge is a gun, great leader and what not but come on without the premerships which he contributed too I'll give you that he is at Goddard Bartel boomer harvey level. A great but not a champion. Judd Ablett are champions. Hodge is well and truly a level below that. Only a Hawthorn fan could argue different.

How is Hodge even close in this poll? I mean really, he's a good big game performer, but so is Judd. One was in the conversation as being the best in the AFL for about 5 years, the other has probably never been in the top 10-20 players in the game. As players, don't understand how you wouldn't choose Judd (and I dislike Judd).

Hodge has absolutely been a top 10-20 player. For multiple years.

Judd winning despite being injured for most of the year and Hodge coming off the back of a Norm Smith. Goes to show it is Judd comfortably

Judd's second Brownlow was a farce.

How he wasn't suspended for his dirty elbow on Pavlich's face, when Pav was under him on the ground and couldn't protect himself was simply unbelievable.

But it's OK, it wasn't forceful contact............... It only meant he required 6 stitches is all, no biggy.

People always forget that Hodge was better than Judd in 2010.

Hodge was 2nd in the MVP, High up on all the other awards, Won the Hawthorn B&F, Was AA captain named at centre.

Judd won the Brownlow, But he was on the interchange bench in AA, and a borderline selection.

In '05 Hodge had his first injury-free season, playing in the midfield. He averaged over 5 more possessions than Judd that season and was outstanding and was awarded an AA spot for his efforts.

Hodge has constantly been in the top echelon of players in the game throughout his career, which is why he's so highly rated by all.

Having said that for mine Judd's best is/was better, it's simple really. At his peak he was a once-in-a-generation kind of midfielder, and second only to Ablett Jnr in terms of peak performances.

People act like it's some kind of slight on Hodge to admit this, but it's simply not, it takes nothing away from the greatest Hawthorn player I've had the privileged of watching in my life-time. But it doesn't mean Hodge was a simply devastating, courageous, hard, smart, unrelenting, skilful player and leader. You just won't find anyone better at leading a side than Hodge, and if I was in charge back in the '01 draft I'd have taken Hodge over Judd every-single-time, as Hawthorn simply wouldn't be the successful club we are without him. There are some intangibles that Judd doesn't bring to the table that Hodge does, for mine.

Anyway, both are great players and will go down in history as two greats of their clubs. In Hodge's case he will go down as one of the very best for Hawthorn, whereas Judd's career was cut short (peak years anyway) through injury whilst Hodge has is flexible enough to adapt to his body slowing down.

Lol what rubbish. Judd for some bizarre reason was hardly spoken of by the media that year despite absolutely tearing games to shreds with Carlton.

I even remarked before the Brownlow that he'd win because he'd had so many BOG performances.

Are you now going to downplay Swan's 2011 season because everyone rated Judd more? Of course not.

Surprised it's that close to be honest. I'm biased but would still have Judd ahead by quite some way. Their outputs might be similar now (Hodge maybe just ahead) but at his peak Judd was miles better.

That pretty much sums up your post. You think Judd was better. These are thoughts

These However are facts.

Hodge was 2nd in the MVP behind Swan.
Hodge was all Australian Captain, named in the Centre.
Judd was named on the interchange bench on the AA team.

Judd was not in the best 5 players in the comp that year. Hodge was. If you want to debate this then start with why he finished further behind in the MVP and could not take Hodge's Midfield spot away from him?

Judd was lucky to make the AA team that year, and was a bit like Pendlebury this year- A solid year, still better than most, but perhaps a bit lucky to be in ahead of a Luke Parker type. Hodge however had an absolute standout season and one of his best.

Brownlow's are irrelevant, and not a clear indicator of a more dominant season. Otherwise Priddis-->Selwood.

And no way in hell are their outputs close to similar now.

Not even debatable that Hodge has had a better 2-3 years than Judd.
