Judd by a lot!!! in terms of playing ability....

Hodge for leadership and being a "top bloke"

Judd's best was outstanding, best in the league at that point and better than what Hodge has performed at any one time in his carrer.
Anyone saying he has been so far/miles better etc are well, dumb and don't watch enough of Hodge live each week to know why he is a great of the comp.
Someone earlier asked who the Saints should take if they could now knowing how each have turned out, I'd be very surprised if they and most clubs didn't take hodge knowing things like booze cruises, drinking all day at crown with a bloke who was going to be on tv that night at the brownlow, pressure points etc etc.
Also two brownlows are great(not sure he should have got No2) but lots of greats never got one, Matthews, Carey Ablett sir anyone, just maybe they are overrated!!!!!
Anyway yeah Judd's best was better, we wouldn't swap Hodge, he has helped build a great club/culture and that may just be more important to some clubs

That pretty much sums up your post. You think Judd was better. These are thoughts

These However are facts.

Hodge was 2nd in the MVP behind Swan.
Hodge was all Australian Captain, named in the Centre.
Judd was named on the interchange bench on the AA team.

Judd was not in the best 5 players in the comp that year. Hodge was. If you want to debate this then start with why he finished further behind in the MVP and could not take Hodge's Midfield spot away from him?

Judd was lucky to make the AA team that year, and was a bit like Pendlebury this year- A solid year, still better than most, but perhaps a bit lucky to be in ahead of a Luke Parker type. Hodge however had an absolute standout season and one of his best.

Brownlow's are irrelevant, and not a clear indicator of a more dominant season. Otherwise Priddis-->Selwood.
Or maybe you could accept that the AA selections **** things up.

Wasting my time here. You and other Hawks come up with ridiculous crap to downplay the greatness of Judd, a player who is way past Hodge. This is a guy talked up as a team of the century type player. Hodge isn't.

He won two Brownlows and was the best player in the competition for a few years. Hodge's toughness and leadership are unquestioned but on pure footballing ability Judd is only behind Ablett over the last ten years.

Yeah, fair call I reckon (even though the 2nd Brownlow was ridiculous). Luke has been amazing for the club and is a better captain than Judd IMO (won the captain's award this year too). Judd has definitely been the better player though.

Yeah they do sometimes **** things up. Judd shouldn't have been AA that year. Everyone said he was lucky. Not Hodge However, he was second picked after swan.

You have this jaded idea that every time Judd steps on the the field, everything he does is magically better than what Hodge does 100% of the time. You have this idea because you are a one eyed supporter and your love for your team means you assume you are right here. But you aint, you just have a short memory.

Hodge was better than Judd in 2010. Fact. He was higher in the MVP, AA captain (in Judds spot), Higher in all media/coaches awards, ect. Cop it on the chin mate.

Will you cop that acceptpt for 2010,2012 and 2014 that Judd has been better?

Will you also accept that Judd from 2004-2009 was better than any season Hodge has put together?

Sure Judd has had better seasons. I am not debating. You just seem to have this misguided view that Judd is some devine footballing untouchable, and Hodge would be lucky to tie his bootlaces.

Judd was more explosive, a better clearance player and had a better goal sense.

Hodge has the ability to play as a defender, is a better captain, and a better on field director.

Judd was probably a better individual player, although Hodge is not miles behind individually, and the question was who would you take, not who was better. The impact Hodges leadership and on field direction has on actually winning games of football can not be measured by stats.

Go back and see my earlier posts.

I have continually stated that Hodge is a great player. The issue is that Hawthorn fans want to think he is elite and he is not.

Ill repeat what I said in an earlier post.

Hodge is a great player who raised his game to elite levels when it mattered most.
Judd is (was) an elite player who stayed at elite level when it mattered most.

Hawthorn fans need to realise that it is no slight on Hodge to say he is not as good as Judd, perhaps only 2 or 3 have been better over the last 15 years.

Mate as if Hodge is not elite. He is the definition of elite.

And bolded is just complete crap. You think that Hodge just decides to play well when he feels its extra important?

If a 3X premiership player, 2 X premiership captain, 2x Norm Smith Winner, 2 X B&F winner, 3 X AA (one as captain) is not elite, then the word shouldn't exist.

So if Hodge is elite then what do you call Ablett? Is elite your highest ranking or do you have something higher? This is why this discussion will go nowhere. We have different definitions of elite.

You nailed it! That's why I'd take Hodge in a heartbeat.

Many of us have actually said he isn't. The poll is who would you choose in your team though (knowing now how their career's have panned out).

Hawks would still pick Hodge every time even while acknowledging Judd's better individual career. Not sure what's hard to grasp about that.

As for not being elite, c'mon.............

Fair enough, and that has been recognised by me and many other people on here that Hawthorn would make the same choice again and again and again.

Thread locked up.

Judd better player but Hodge better for Hawthorn. Everyone happy?

Different topic.

Elite is subjective. I have a problem calling Hodge elite because it seems to be the highest level players get ranked in the AFL.

If it is the highest level then Hodge can't be elite, otherwise he is in the same rank as Ablett.

That is personal opinion though so can't argue the case Hodge is not elite either.

Oh come on... you really don't think Judd has these things as well? Don't confuse having other hall of fame players around him as having some magical power to lift more than Judd does.
He might, but he's also an eye gouging, wing tackling, money chasing mercenary - and that's the deal breaker.

Besides, Hodge is my hero. :hearts:

That's true enough but I still think there would be plenty of people (non Hawthorn) that while also recognising Judd has been the better player, would take Hodge if given the choice.
