I just cannot understand how the media can genuinely support that its a reasonable price for him. They make out as if hes Walsh or Andy... He's played about 3 good quarters of footy in his entire career. Mindboggling.
Now Walsh I would pony up those sorts of picks , Has looked a superstar from his very first game.

Do we want to pay the high price has always been the question and it seems we do. 13+F1 is a higher price than I'd be comfortable with in almost any circumstance, assuming there's not a 2nd this year or next coming back.

The issue is really going to be Lobb and Meek. Let either of those go and we're down to 2 players that can competently play ruck at AFL for the next couple of years. Let both go and we're down to one. Let neither go and both almost certainly leave end 2023, and neither is going to garner much return out of contract. So in any circumstance we need a ruck, a foward/ruck or both. This year or next.

Jackson is definitely a better bet as a ruck and probably a better bet as a forward/ruck than anything else we can realistically get. As I've stated previously I think that's all he is, he is neither a forward or a mid.

13+F1 is really too much without something decent coming back. If the Meek and Lobb trades happen, which honestly I think they will, that compensation must be equivalent to either of those picks. Effectively that would mean the cost of a first for securing that forward/ruck position for the next 10 years, which is reasonable.

Let's see how how ballsy Peter Bell actually is, in the meantime I'll quietly be buying up bricks.

I don't Like dealing with Melbourne They bent us over on the Hogan deal when they basically wanted him gone . Jackson is not worth two first round picks on exposed form and is a mid tier player all this bullshit generational player yada yada is just that . Truth is with Grundy coming in they want Jackson gone . Let west coast fork out 3 picks above 15 for him.

West Coast are not going to trade pick 2 alone.

They need to split the pick and take at least one first round pick to the draft themselves.

The split the pick they need multiple teams for them to trade with.

Only the Swans and GWS have multiple picks.

Even then they need to better our offer and Jackson to agree.
Pick 13,F1 for Jackson and F3 seems fair.

How has he not nominated a team yet? When was the last time a player didn’t nominate a team, and hence allowed a bidding war between multiple teams?

It sounds like getting Jackson is going to destroy our club

On an even bleaker note we need another key forward now that Lobb wants out and Tabs is always injured. So we are we handing over next years first for Jackson on top of this year's
He's uncontracted. He's leaving Melbourne regardless.

When all the bluster in the media is from Melbourne (and WC), and we hear close to nothing from Freo, that's probably a strong sign we don't have much to worry about how things are progressing. I think we learnt quickly not to be influenced by the media (or try to use the media) from the Hogan trade - ever since then we've been pretty solid at the trade table (and I don't mean having to 'win' every trade). If you are resorting to trying to influence the outcome of a trade via the media then you've probably hit the phase of grasping at straws.

this is the crux of it for me.
West Coast have a good draft hand this year, and some picks next year which will still be a low number.
unless they can split two, it’s not really going to be better than what we can offer.
They need a massive rebuild.
I wouldn’t be splitting 2
offer what’s fair and no more.
we need something back

Cerra: Pick 5, 75 games after 4 years, two consecutive top 5 finishes in the b&f. Pick 6 and 35.
Jackson: Pick 3, 52 games after 3 years, highest finish in a b&f is 12th, but played 5 good mins in an 80 point grand final win. Tall. Pick 13, 9-15, 20. With nothing coming back.

Makes no sense.

Cerra was proven and consistent. Jackson has had maybe 4 good games his career.
I don't necessarily agree with the first sentence of your last paragraph. The catch cry throughout his time at Fremantle especially in the last couple of seasons was " Andy is better right now but Chez has the higher potential ceiling"

Just like Jackson this mythical potential was Cerra's greatest quality. He had a game or two a season where he showed it (very similar to Jackson) and around those he did enough to stay in the side on what could be (like Jackson).

Brayshaw and Serong won games with their quality; much like Gawn does for Melbourne and Cerra/Jackson were just present most of the time.

So I agree with you it shouldn't be more than the price for Cerra but I also don't think Cerra was more consistent.

Cerra finished top 5 in the Doig in both 20 and 21, his last two years here. He was very consistent

I know its going against the grain a bit here but I will offer a more positive view on things by passing on an informed and independent view.

My brother-in-law is a recruiter for an AFL team - neither at the Demons or for us. Now he's a draft guy and not in list management so bear that in mind but I was chatting to him last night and the view of the recruiting and list management guys he's chatted with at his club is that our 2 firsts plus a second is still a good deal for us. He'd throw in the future 2nd and be happy with it even though by his own admission he values draft picks higher than many in the industry he's in.

As an aside he personally had Jackson rated 6th overall in his draft year - interestingly behind both Serong and Young so that's a big yay for us. His current view is Jackson is well ahead of where he projected he'd be and is potentially going to be better than he first thought he would be, which was very bloody good. He now sees Blicavs level as his floor which is very nice but expects him to blow past that pretty easily and, importantly, pretty soon. Someone at his club thinks he'll impact games as much as Jeremy Cameron does now (albeit in a different way and in a different role obviously) and that he'll do that within the next few years which would also make the contract he'd be on good value too. That's a nice idea to consider whilst also being impossible to prove.

Like the majority on here I also hope we get him for this and next year's firsts and nothing else, but I thought I'd point out its not just Melbourne fans who think that's a bit of a bargain.

With that said I'll withdraw and allow the gnashing of teeth to continue.

Depends which AFL team your friend is a recruiter for.

A few of the AFL recruiters have had mares lately!

I like his optimism

He isn't contracted so that's Freo's best bargaining chip with the chance of him ending up in Perth anyway as WC have pick two in the PSD.

It's just potential at this stage and even recruiters get it wrong. I'll be happy with two firsts but let's not go two seconds on top because Freo need to nail areas of importance such as a key forward to line up in the future with Amiss or even another potent small forward.
