Heard he just signed a 2 year extension. I'm not sure if that means he is with us for 3 years now or just the 2 but its great news on either side of the arguement. For mine there is no arguement as I still think he is a required player even after reading the previous posts on the topic.

That is purely my opinion and the other side of the debate makes perfect sense also.

I'd still like to see him play up forward before we ship him off to the Goldy if Rance comes through. Great player , great clubman

If thats true then he wont be goin anywhere unless we get an offer too good to refuse like a top ten pick. I would be worried if he was out of contract because we would get shafted by the afl's evaluation of him. I couldnt see them giving us any better than a pick in the 30's or 40's. I'd rather we offered schultz than any of our other defenders.

McGuane ain't going anywhere. He loves the club and all his mates are Tigers.

I think you'll find McGuane, Thursfield, Hughes, Riewoldt, Polo, Connors, Edwards, Pattison, Cotchin will be here for a long time.

the way i see it is thursfield and moore are both ahead of mcGaune, so mcGaune and Rance are fighting for the same starting birth, especially untill bowden retires. so losing him wouldnt be the end of the world if we got something decent.

We have Thursfield, Moore and McGuane who are all similar defenders. They are all about the same height and weight, and therefore do not offer the side flexibility if they are all played in the same back 6. While all can play as a KP Defender, it is not their most ideal position. Ideally at least one of these 3 would be a big bodied defender, to allow the side greater flexibility whenever we are up against big bodied forwards.

Personally I think McGuane overtook Thursfield in 2008, however I still rate Thursfield higher. I'd keep Moore to play as a tall HBF in a milburn/birchall type role. We have Schulz, Rance and maybe Post as the big bodied defenders, but Schulz has not proven he can handle it, Rance is still too young and Post may become a forward.

At the end of the day if we can get a top 25 pick for McGuane we can strengthen the list without creating a hole because we already have 2 other experienced players that can play his role, and perhaps play it even better. Use that pick to bring in another big bodied defender.

Big Bodied Key Defenders (95 kg+): Rance, Post, Draft Pick, Rookie Pick

Close Down Key Defenders (85-90 kg): Moore, Thursfield, Draft Pick.

6 key defenders on the senior list with a rookie key defender seems a good balance (obviously Rance and Post aren't 95+ kg yet).

A top 25 pick for Mcgaune would be pointless. Having three similar defenders is ok if they are flexible, all three can play small and tall.
