Make or break years

Lynch drops a mark said:
josh wooden, adkins, banfield, Rowan Jones

Every year is make or break for Wooden, he's a squad player who can do the job if injuries hit.

Adkins yes, Jones yes.

Probably Banfield's last time around either way but has nothing to proove.

Also McDougall and Gaspar - and time for Brent Staker to show his true worth for the team.

Michael Gardiner has to show he still has a bit to offer, Ashley Sampi must find consistency and Quinten Lynch is probably at the mercy of the coaching staff. Of course if Brad Smith is a bust, it's unlikely he'll get a 3rd season on the list (but I'm not meant to talk about that happening, I might make my fellow Coasters cry).

Other than that, the rest are probably on track.

Winderlich , Reynolds , Watson. And those two that have a charmed footballling life bloody Bolton and Henno.

watson won't get the axe.
he's got skills and sheedy is on the record for saying that he's the most creative player on the list.
Big bodied tall guys with great vision and skills don't grow on trees.
He'll be given every opportunity possible to prove himself.
Winderlich, Reynolds, Bolton, Henno, Nash all must improve
With all the HBF's on the list, you'd think that McVeigh would want to have a good year as he has the kind of profile that's tradeble.

Brent Hall, Tristen Walker, Tarkyn Lockyer, Ryan Lonie and Adam Iacobucci.

Tarkyn Lockyer is vice-captain of the club, but he must play up to the standard needed to play at the highest level. Tarkyn must improve and try and get back to some of that old form prior to his knee reconstruction.

I am being hard on young Adam Iacobucci, but he must show that he is capable of playing at the highest level. He looked totally lost when he played senior football this year, and that is something he must work on down at Williamstown.

Ryan Lonie is capable of becoming a very good footballer. He lost a lot of confidence in his own game this year, and that must improve. Lonie would be the safest out of the lot, because he has the ability to win his spot back in the team.

Brent Hall and Tristen Walker must improve.

Brent Hall, Leon Davis, Ryan Lonie, Tristan Walker, Jason Cloke. Like it or not, these guys have their careers firmly on the line in 2006. Lonie and Cloke, in particular, have a role to play in the side, but will need to find their best form quickly. Chad Morrison may also be under the pump.

There could be more that could be added to the list I would say O'Bree but he was signed to a 2 year contract. I would think maybe Fraser would be on the list.

Fraser, maybe, but I think regardless of what happens in 2006 he will still be on the list in 2007.

I think Tim Clarke's make or break season was 2005. He improve 250% on previous season, and whilst he still may not be an elite footballer, he is a solid contributor each week who plays by the game plan. Like others, he has skill errors, many of which have been rectified and can run all day. Problem is, if he doesn't perform he is one of the first who Hawthorn fans get on the back of.

Spot on. For a guy of limited footballing ability, he had a very good season by his standards, his best yet.

I can see your points about his experience and positional advantages, but it still doesn't mean he won't be under the hammer. We have an unknown quantity in Matt Little, who by all reports is a goal kicking forward in a similar fashion as Dixon, along with Roughead, Franklin, Dowler, Croad, Birchall and Guerra with 5-10 years of senior footy left.

Some good points - it'd be nice to have a look at Little at senior level in 2006. I still think that he will get first crack at his forward pocket slot, though. And Dowler won't play senior footy (you'd think) in 2006.

I don't think that it is Paul Bevan's make-or-break year just yet. He did lost ground on his 2004 form, but I'd say he has up untill 2007. Coin_Toss, the club is very pleased with Iacobucci so far. He should end up replacing Licuria.

For Richmond it would be,

Krakouer
Tivendale
Chaffey
Schulz
Jackson
Roach
Moore

Do you think Jackson is still too young to talk about make or break? His 2004 (or was it his 2003) was pretty fantastic, in the view of an opposition supporter, but he seems to have stalled for senior selection. This could be Wallace just wanting to give him the apprecnticeship that Frawley couldn't afford, but he had good pace & skill. I'm just dumbfounded that we apply make or break type logic to the very young players. A number of Carlton fans do it for Walker and I just don't get it - he's still 19, so how can it be make or break? I reckon age 21-22 and its make or break for a position on a list.

I had massive wraps on Salopek, what is his story? I know he had injuries and the Port list was tough to crack however they had their share of injuries and he still couldnt manage a regular spot.

Glandular Fever had a lot to do with it I think.

I would imagine there would be a few clubs interested in those two.

Thurstans was almost traded on the day but I think the papers were lodged too late. Hawthorn I think?

Salopek -well rumours are that Carlton made a bid but couldn't get the interest.

Trent Sporn - Personally a huge disappointment given he started so well with a Rising Star nomination and won the reserves B & F in his first year.Injury prone, hasn't bulked up enough and perhaps lacks the pace due to putting on weight.

Justin Davies - training the house down ATM but I still think he'll be out the door unless he plays every game.Doesn't get enough of the ball to be an onballer or kick enough goals to be a forward.

Ian Prendergast - Give me Saddington, Bower or anyone ahead of this great clubman.

Livingston - Love the guy because he's had shocking injuries and busts his gut to make the most of his talent unlike Norman. But I still doubt he can make it anywhere other than a third tall and a couple of recent additions have more skill.

Wiggins - Um, great tackler, athleticism and speed but he just can't play, kick or think.

Chambers - Wizard Cup specialist who only use is he adds a mature body.Only kicked 3 goals in 10 games this year even though he has a massive kick and worked in the WOK.:p

Bannister - we needed a tagger this year but the athletic Bannister was only given 5 games.

I think you can add Toby Thurstans and Steven Salopek to that list.

Salopeck signed a two year deal prior to trade week, didn't he?

Was 2004.

if ur talkin about jackson, read the post i wrote on the page two of this thread, i went through everything i suppose, so yeh, perhaps answer ur question.

Matt McCarthy - Has gone from best first year player in 2003 to the clubs most injured player 2004 & 2005. Has great hands and a good leap but the thing that is most appealing is his ability to split a pack wide open. Something that the cats forward line has been missing for some time. Main concern is his kicking inaccuracy. Something the cats forward line has had too much of in recent years.

Only managed the one quarter in the AFL this year before getting injured but had a 100% conversion rate kicking 1 goal straight. Managed 6 VFL games and kicked 20.13 at an average of 3 and a bit per game, second only to Podsy.

Charlie Gardiner - Cat fans are still very undecided on Charlie. Can take a big mark and fill your heart with joy only to deflate it when he kicks a mongrel punt out on the full. Best suited as a linkman simular to what Tarrant does for the Maggies when they have a full list (ie leading from the forward 50m toward the wing/centre). Gets plenty of senior games but not lots of game time. Played 14 games in 05 but hasn't really looked like having a winning impact on a game except for when he came on and kicked a couple of quick ones against Brisbane in the 2004 Prelim final.

Paul Koulouriotis - Struggling to get a gig as part of Geelongs midfield rotation. Showed enough in a few matches over the past two years to show that he can play at the top level but probably has too many similar types above him. Can be one to step into the side without too many dramas but will be 24 by the time the 2006 season rolls out so it's now or never for Koulio.

Add Shane Obree to that and I think that it would be a fair list.

He's signed for at least one more year after next year, from memory, I would agree but I think the club may seen something in him.

It runs in the family, both brothers cannot think, nor can they seem to do anything constructive on the field.

Hamish McIntosh - needs to establish himself in the best 22 by seasons end, either as a second ruckman to Hale or a tall forward.
Cameron Thurley - considering he was drafted as a 24 year old, he needs to become our regular forward pocket, kicking 30+ goals a season.
Blake Grima - one of my favourites and has a lot of potential, but after battling injury for many years, 2006 is make or break.
Drew Petrie - needs to settle into a position, if Hamish makes it, i can't see there being room for both.
Eddie Sansbury - needs to become a more accountable football player and show some desperation and heart, has all the tricks, but needs to find his spot as either a back pocket or forward pocket.
Ben Schwarze - recruited mature age, was close to selection in 2005, but another year being " a very good VFL player" would see him shown the door
Joel Perry - should get more oppourtunity with the retirement of Colbert, i expect him to eventually phase Shannon Watt out of the team, but if he fails to play 10+ games, he may get the boot.
Leigh Harding - will have real competition to hold his spot with the arrival of Thurley, but needs to retain mid 2005 form to remain on the list.
Brent Le Cras - should not be on the 2006 list, Mick Stevens is very stiff, would need to do something special to stay on in 2007.
