Malthouse outcoached Lyon.
We just couldn't convert.

Debatable. Collingwood didn't have a Plan B after their physical opening and subsequent failure to capitalise. I felt Lyon kept his cool well with his defensive structure and then by mid second quarter they had largely weathered the storm.

Malthouse's choice of game-plan (his Plan A) tends to suggest that the gap in talent between the Pies and Saints (at least in his mind) is large. You could see him going bananas in the Coaches Box late in the first quarter knowing that they had probably blown their chance.

After his coaching performance this week it might not be such a bad thing if he was suspended for a few weeks.

At least you've kept your sense of humour. ;):thumbsu:

Re: Saints lodge complaint with MRP

i agree that the game is sanitized, but a coach laying into opposition players isn't the ideal place to re-introduce some grit.

my main concern is the possible rapist thing. a few words, meh. but bandying something like that around has more ramifications than just calling him an annoying little ****.

malthouse is going to use the 'i was speaking to my own team' argument...
afl wont be able to PROVE otherwise, matter will be dropped...

malthouse never said anything, just like fev didnt send the mms, just like stokes didnt buy the coke...

Re: Saints lodge complaint with MRP

Yeah, he's underrated alright. Strikes me as a shit bloke too, but let's not confuse that with his footballing ability.

If I was picking a midfield, I'd have Licuria ahead of him. Having said that, I'd probably pick 60 or more midfielders ahead of Licuria in/since his time. I could probably name a few small forwards I'd prefer to have than Milne in that same time. See the difference?

Not confusing his as a person with him as a footballer, just think Licuria was a better player overall than Milne.

Thats not the issue anyway, I can understand why the saints would be annoyed, I personally don't see anything wrong with some sledging regardless who it is from so long as it is on the field, but think that if they were upset they could handle it better than whinging to the AFL. If it was Collingwood I would hope that they would just move on from it and not give it a second thought.

Did you watch Didak last night?

He was probably in our best half-dozen and had Clint Jones shadowing him all night.

All Didak's performance last night did was highlight how far Brent Harvey has fallen this year.

Lol wut?

Half of Alan 'Junk time' Didak touches came in the last 5 minutes of the game when the game was done and dusted :D

You make a compelling case. It's just a shame Champion Data recorded 16 of Didak's 21 touches in the first 3 qtrs when Collingwood controlled most of the game but didn't capitalise on the scoreboard.

Unlike most of the Saints midfielders' touches Didak got the majority of his in the middle and playing at half forward as opposed to running around the defensive 50 kicking back and forth to each other.

You can make a case about numerous Pies players who were poor last night but Didak was definitely not one of them.

It is a tad "ironic" that it is Leigh Montagna's comments about "cooperation with the AFL" about lodging a formal complaint.

Anyhow, sledging is sledging.

It's been in the game for years and will remain in the game for years.

I haven't a problem with it. I'm almost certain Milne isn't the first player to be sledged or actually sledge himself. He's a big boy (albeit a small one).

It's the old cliche, what's said on the field stays on the field. Just gamesmanship if you like.

If the word used in question was "assaulter", then of course the Pies could argue that Mick was only talking to Swanny. It won't take much to prove what specific word was said and who it was directed at. Real amateur hour suburban footy mentality stuff from the Collingwood coach and his assistant.

Both Malthouse and Licuria are in trouble, simple as that. Anyone that thinks otherwise has no idea about how the AFL operates.

I am quite sure that Adrian Anderson will beg to differ.

Or liar, then he can say he was speaking to Didak, or yelling it to Shaw in the stands.

And you are correct, it was absolute amateur time by a very under pressure Malthouse

Up the creek.

Nice to hear Eddie back up Mick's denial on radio this morning. Completely contradicted Malthouses lies.

The cracks widen.

Lots of sandy frontal crevices in this thread.

Loved it.. would of loved it if it was Ross Lyon doing the same. A few of you muppets need to get over yourselves.

A coach mouthing off to a player behind the potection of his team and AFL rules is about as soft as you can get.

When that same coach starts labelling players as rapists then he's out of the gutter and into the sewer.

Malthouse should stick to intimidating pen-dicks in press conferences because he aint intimidating anyone on the field. They're more his speed.

Since when did BF use Adrian Anderson as their moral compass?
Seeing as he is in charge of football operations and is the one who hands out the 'please explain' letters, his opinion is the only one that counts in relation to this incident. And being one of those smarmy lawyer types who would be outraged by the use of potentially slanderous comments against a registered AFL player, you can be rest assured that every single aspect of this incident will be investigated to within an inch of its life.

No matter how you want to slice it and dice it, this was dumb, dumb, dumb by Malthouse and Licuria.

Doesn't everyone sledge behind the protection of the AFL? Its not like players would sledge each other if they weren't playing a game.
The worst that happens when players sledge is they grab hold of each others jumpers and get then it gets broken up, everyone is too scared to do anything because of the AFL rules, very rare that people are held accountable physically by what they say on the field, other than maybe having a tackle held onto longer or a latish bump - pretty tame stuff generally. Its not like you see punch ons all the time during games.

If a player takes retribution on a player he gets a month holiday. Two months at best.

If a player takes retribution on a coach. Christ, he'd be lucky to only get 12 months.

It's the epitome of gutlessness for a coach to be calling someone an "f***ing rapist". Even more so when he does it surrounded by his players.

And has anyone asked why Collingwood were so close to the St Kilda huddle. Personally I reckon the whole thing from before the first bounce was premeditated by the lowlife they call a coach.
