Personally I like the $51 on offer for not coaching/other team. While I think its pretty very likely he will be coaching, he's also said that he was planning on being in Tuscany in July next year plus he has stated that he doesn't see himself as a career coach. Who is to say that he won't decide to take a year off and enjoy life as he had planned to?

Bomber in red to coach Dons

AUSTRALIA'S biggest bookmaker has framed a bizarre market on Essendon's coaching job.

Sportingbet Australia opened a market late yesterday offering odds of $1.50 that Geelong coach Mark Thompson would coach Essendon in 2008 and $2.50 he would stay with the Cats.

The bookmaker's AFL manager Stephen Fletcher said rumours had been rife that Thompson would accept a four-year deal worth up to $5 million to coach Essendon.

He said it was planned to keep the market open until game time on Saturday when Geelong plays Port Adelaide in the Grand Final.

Fletcher said he was happy to back his sources that Thompson, who is yet to sign a new deal with the Cats, will return to Essendon where he began his league career as a player.

Already the Bombers have announced their former player Neale Daniher, who resigned as Melbourne coach during the season, has been ruled out of the coaching job.

Hawthorn assistant coach Damien Hardwick, also an ex-Bomber player, and Essendon assistant coach Matthew Knights, remain in the running.

Essendon plans to speak with Thompson after the Grand Final.

Fletcher said he was prepared to punt on Thompson taking the multi-million deal with Essendon.

"Essendon have seemingly stopped looking and are waiting for the Grand Final to end," Fletcher said. "Thompson hasn't re-signed with Geelong, so it seems to make sense. I mean it's just a rumour, but I believe the sources so I'm happy to run with it."

Fletcher said Essendon had plenty to offer Thompson even if its the list was clearly inferior to Geelong's.

"Essendon would be willing to offer Thompson big money and a long-term contract," he said.

Fletcher said if Thompson coaches Geelong to the premiership, he might believe it was the right time to move to the Bombers and rebuild the team as a power.

Sportingbet Australia is also offering odds of $51 that Thompson will coach a club other than Essendon or Geelong or not coach at all.

Thompson's future at Geelong was also the subject of bizarre comments from Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse on the eve of last week's preliminary final.

In his column in The Australian, Malthouse said coaches looked for every skerrick of advantage in September.

"So I can't help but wonder whether doubts over Thompson's future might unsettle Geelong," Malthouse wrote before his side played the Cats last Friday night.

"When you have taken a group of young men this far, the sense of dedication and commitment is intense. I can understand Essendon's interest in Mark, but I'm struggling to work out why he would be contemplating leaving Geelong."

Both are paying $1.85 now

On Sports Tonight last night they did say that Hardwick has been told he will be coach and it will be announced today or tomorrow

Who in their right mind would stay at Geelong?? Their players, president and supporters should be ashamed of themselves after last years performance. They emmbarassed their SENIOR coach. Now they seem to have completely forgotten what happened and even now, its "no we want Thompson" or "he should have done it years ago" or "anyone could coach them" Whatever!!!! Geelong are a club who lack anything even remotely loyal. Teams like that dont win premeships! Whether he goes back to Essendon or not it would be a stunning move to dump a club after the humilation they put him through! What goes around comes around, thats why the Cats have remained with out the cup for so many years!
GO PORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice copy and paste job.

Just in at $1.85

Still ****ing stoked. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Why would he ever want to leave Geelong for Essendon?

Because he's Essendon through and through. Even right now he's probably thinking, "Gee I wish it was the Dons I was coaching this weekend instead of this bunch of pussies".

I guess anyone that got on that 2.50 for Thompson remaining at Geelong is pretty happy now.
They took that bet off quick smart today when the breaking news about Essendon's coach came out. lol

Obviously you missed the mail - if he wanted to coach Essendon, he would, there was nothing at all stopping him. The fact that he's not coaching Essendon suggests he doesn't. Maybe in a couple of years he'll change his mind, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

As for me I made a tidy profit on the bet I made. Money for jam.

Once again the throngs of armchair experts are slightly incorrect with their presumptions - oh well, move on to the next load of bull sh*it and give your "expert" opinions on that now....

I knew it was money for jam but a few things stopped me:
1. I didn't have a Sportingbet account (and the money I allocate for gambling is in my Betfair account ;))
2. I could have signed up but depositing would be a problem - I don't have a credit card and would have had to do a bank transfer which takes a couple of days to clear.
3. A 6-month wait to collect (it says "Round 1, 2008"...they'll wait until then to settle it just in case something weird happens like Bomber dies)

If it wasn't for these things, I would have netted an easy $20K (that's all I've got saved up). My fault for being lazy.

I do hope that punters on here cleaned up though. Again, there will be aftertimers who exaggerate what they put on, but it would be good to know that people cleaned out this bookie (hopefully we hear about a few $200,000 bets in the media :D)
