So good today.... Gives our mids first use of it and has the agility and speed not to be a liability around his feet.

I'd be seriously tempted to bring Cloke back in (Grundy out) and run Cox as 1st ruck with Moore as backup.

Thoughts?

I think AFL recruiters are actually limiting themselves.

188cm to 196cm people over in US that athletically put Cox to shame and i don't buy the crap they couldn't learn how to be a KPF or mid for one minute.

Hell Cox was bought in more as a KPF anyway but i think in time will become 1st choice ruck.

I somewhat agree that the AFL isn't taking enough advantage of the wasted talent left over from guys brought up in elite systems only to miss out on a few spots in a few sports in a country of 320 million.

But it's a lot of effort with a lot of risk attached. Israel Folau is most definitely an elite athlete by any standards and look how that turned out. Aussie rules is a pretty ridiculous game and there will be guys who will simply never get it no matter how much time is put into them. There will always be that required level of intuition from recruiters to pick the guys that 'get' the game, even if they aren't the most athletic of the bunch, but still possess a superior level of athleticism that makes putting the time into them worth it over a guy who although not naturally gifted, has been playing the game his whole life.

Cox is probably more unique than people give him credit for. He seems to understand what a life changing opportunity he has earned and doesn't look at it like some gimmicky joke. You see videos of some of those American potential recruits and the look of 'what the f*ck am I doing?' is usually plastered across their faces. For every Cox, there will be multiple busts.

That one handed mark and handball off to Howe was just ridiculous!!

I was in the AFL members and was looking down the line of the kick and he was out of position and looked no chance to get it but he stuck out that long arm and it stuck. I don't think any other player in the league could have done it.

Saw him do pretty much the exact same thing in the VFL too early on and thought this bloke has something.

His hand-eye coordination is breath-taking, even more so when you consider he is 8ft 11. Lovely hands and a nice shot on goal.. oh and a great ruckmen too! When does his contract expire? Because we need to give him another 3-4 years ASAP

IMO Falou case is not one i would use to judge it. Also NRL players have an even bigger body change plus 360 component to make up and adjust too then a basket baller.

It's not all athletic potential obviously as there is also desire to want to succeed in it and having enough IQ to "get it".
Rumours were Falou was all about the pay check (of course he was still trying but when your heart is not in it are we really seeing the best of him, on top of this he was not known for his "smarts") and was never going to sign on past his initial contract.

Also the risk is very minuscule, as it essentially is only wasted money/time (no diff then most draftees from year to year just more costly monetary wise), of which we have excess to spare on things just like this.
We aren't paying the TAX why not invest in oversees athletes grab 2 at a time invest resources and see what we un-earth.

Imagine being the first club to pick a Buddy Franklin esque 196cm athletic freak from the US, we are all wondering where Darcys KP partner in crime is coming from it may well be from there.

Deffinitely will have plenty of "misses" but the ones you get right will be worth it.

I think Mason having a soccer background in addition to basketball gave him a big advantage over your average US athlete trying to make the grade over here. None of the major US sports require footskills, so soccer is the only time they kick a ball with any frequency, even if it does lack a drop from hand to foot.

I think the key is identifying guys who are switched on and highly coachable. Not only is Mason highly intelligent academically, but he'd already proven he could competently make the switch to a new sport by playing college basketball after growing up playing soccer.

He was a goal keeper, so the hand to foot drop probably wasn't so foreign to him!

I love how this guy can genuinely play as a key forward. If he develops like we all hope, he could become the ruckman/forward we have been waiting a long time for. Hard not to be excited.

I think you nailed it here.

basketball creates the 360 awareness, but so does footy anyway and whatsmore is more important because a good 360% awareness stops you from getting smashed, but goal keeping in soccer must give you more hand to foot than just being a normal soccer player.

great story lets hope it gets bigger and better.

Ridiculous post, he's not 8ft 11, he's 5ft 47.

Just for the record.
Cox is not 7 foot.
7 foot is 2135 in metric.
Cox is 2114.
So just that smidge short of 7 foot.
Get a sense of humour dude!
