Masten

Come on, jumping the gun just a little!!! I see a lot of potential, he is steadily progressing but I suspect he'll be like a Gary Ablett Jnr and wont star until the early 20's to mid 20's when he'll really shine, which come to think of it is like Kerr a little.

Give the kid a break, its his first year in a team beaten a hell of a lot.

I sit pretty much behind the bench and every time he came off he was really blowing. Just needs to get the km under the belt that will come from a few pre-seasons. Really led to space well in the first half and left his opponent behind. Good early signs from him.

That's not really true.

Kerr was one of the front-runners for the Rising Star Award in his debut season.

I think he got pipped by Koschitzke.
But he was no better then that Masten is now

Disagree.

I think Masten will be pretty handy, but Kerr made an impact straight off. His breakaway pace was in evidence immediately.

It's not a big deal, but the "Kerr didn't do anything until his third season" line is BS.

In his debut season, Kerr was one of the stand-out rookies in the comp. Can't say the same about Masten this year.

Harsh thread. After another 20-30 games you should be able to see whether he was worth a top 3 pick. Much too early.

He's a bit vanilla, but then so is Simon Black. Will end up a similar player to him I think, a high quality inside player with very good assist work, without the X-factor of Judd/Kerr/Cousins etc.

Masten is a star. Anyone who doubts him will be biting their words in a few seasons to come! Not only does he cover A LOT of ground during the game, his tackling and pressure is second to none. He will only get better and better.

Obviously far to early to have a clear picture, but his first few games I think has similaritys to Gary Ablett Jnr.(Not saying they are the same player)

Not as fast, but is very good kick over 20-40 meters, has very clean disposal under pressure, and appers to have a lot of time when he gets the ball.

Masten will be Vital to the future midfield, some will question using pick 3 on him because he won't really stand out for another few years and you won't see him kicking many goals from outside 50 but once he wins that first AA and B&F I think you will understand the reason behind using such a low pick on him.

Easily the best midfielder we have drafted since the 2001 draft

very good description jgb99

simon black is more than just handy... so ill be content if masten becomes similar

no player should be judged in their first season

give him about 50games and decide.

Not the same 'feeling' as Judd, Cousins and Kerr?

Masten looks good, but still too small for an inside midfielder. He's a 19 year old who has played less than 10 games, I'm willing to give him a bit of time. Adam Cooney looked like a gimp in his first few games and seems to have turned out OK though is a different type of player. Bartel took a while to get going but turned out a gem.

The notion that because he was drafted at pick 3 he will be as good as any of the above 3 is ludicrous. How many midfielders as good as them have been drafted since 2001?

iirc black was also very light when he started out and took a season or two to find his feet

masten will be similar

I posted a few weeks back after the adelaide game i thought he may be injured when i noticed him having little game and saw him comming off the field grabbing at his groin ( possibly a return of the op he had last year)
I know they are officially saying he has knee sorness, but he didnt have his knee strapped tonight and was clearly wearing the thermal pants under his shorts that are usually used to keep the groin region warm.
With this I say before this point he showed plenty of great qualities in his game that warrents his high ecpectations and i am confident that we will see when he is totally fit we will see why he was drafted by us at no 3.

You can't start having a go at a bloke in his first season. He looks like a very good player to me. He is doing more than we can rightfully expect of him at this stage. The players who need to be criticised are the experienced ones i.e. 80 games plus. It has not been the young players who have let us down this year. The axe will get wielded at the end of the season with those players.

You can't start scapegoating rookies.

It is, but God forbid we have a Tambling on our hands.

I can't believe that you would start comparing the bloke to Tambling. He has shown enough already to suggest that with a bigger body and tank and more expierience he may well be a top 20 player in the comp in the future.

Tambling is usless and, much like Dean Rioli, will only put in enough effort to be good enough to only just keep getting a contract and keep getting paid. If i was Tigers i would admit my mistake now and send him on his bike.

This thread is diabolical.

The only thing holding him back is his build.

Behind Cotchin from last years draft, he was and still is the best midfield prospect. I havent bought into the Palmer hype, yeah he gets the ball and thats fantastic, but his ball use isnt crisp to say the least.

Masten will be a rightfooted Simon Black.

That's all true. :thumbsu:

Besides, he's an East Freo boy..how can he help but be awesome :)

Yeah agree with most - way too early to start judging. If it wasn't for Palmer being so exceptional, I think we would all be very happy with Masten's performance taken in isolation over his first 8 games. Work in close is very good, disposal needs some work but has pinpointed the odd pass here and there so maybe just needs to adapt to AFL pressure, courage is great.
