Game Day Match Sim - Roos v Tigers - Arden St - 10am

The biggest downer of the day was having to watch Bonar still masquerading as an AFL footballer.

Has no defensive skills.
Slow as a wet rag.
No urgency in anything he does.
Has no offensive skills and offers no run off half back.

Please let this did play out his remaining contract in the VFL.

You mean L.Young right?

If anyone who watched can be bothered to give a detailed blow by blow on how everyone went, I would most gladly read it

Gday guys,

Just after opinions on Ziebell’s game and role? Is he playing that ‘backline general’ role that Clarko had Hodge in for years?

He’s playing the bespoke “Clarko is giving him enough rope before upgrading him” role. You’d be hard pressed to find many here when think he’s best 22, and todays performance did little to help.

I'm fine thanks although I did cramp on the couch at one stage. Will be fine for doggies game. Thanks for asking.
Make sure you get a good rub down before nexts weeks game. Dont want you cramping again..maybe Ligma can help with that..;)

Overall pretty positive performance against an experienced Tigs outfit. Defensive transition, and centre square setups were noticeably different. Not as many players getting drawn to the ball and ball carrier as much as previous years. Defensive intent was good but patchy, same with the skill level. Looked to attack off half back with link up play by hand. Had a couple of nice moments with transition from half back that resulted in goals.

Positives/Bests:

Ford - Thought he had some good moments, got up the ground and had some nice marks. probably only had 12-13 disposals but didn't waste them and worked hard to provide an option up the ground and inside 50. Would like to see him thrown in the middle from time to time.

LDU - Racked up the footy at will and would've had the most clearances of anyone in our side. His disposal varied between excellent and poor. If he wants to take his game to another level he really needs to have better distribution particularly when kicking inside forward 50.

Sheezel - Probably had close to 15 disposals and never looked to waste a disposal. Kicked 3 goals, and played a role in another. Isn't the quickest on the field, but looks a step ahead due to his footy smarts. Clean and one touch with ball in hand.

Comben - Didn't get to launch at too many kicks inside 50, but made the most of his opportunities with 2 goals. Seemed to straighten up our structure a bit more.

Turner - Had plenty of touches, defensive effort was good and he even kicked a goal. Still don't think he is best 22 but a positive showing for someone that is on the fringe.

Stevo - Thought he showed a bit, set up a couple of goals and missed one of his own. Was composed with the footy and laid a few nice tackles.

Shiels - Showed some defensive intent with a couple of solid tackles. used the ball wall and worked hard defensively. Was very vocal.

Bonar - Half a dozen good spoils and a couple of nice marks. Him and Logue were the only defenders who actually stuck tight to their man. Was neat with his disposal, but still doesn't offer up much run and carry despite his athletic gifts. Probably went past a few today.

Zurhaar - Liked what I saw in the midfield, couple of really good clearances and offers a good point of difference with his physicality. Didn't get a stack of it but was damaging when he did get it.

Negatives:

Ziebell - Nope. Kicking was crap, particularly under pressure, and he is moving like a glacier. Still blazes away. Will get found out far too often in the backline. Don't see a role for him anymore. Won't be surprised to see him spend plenty of time in the VFL this year.

McDonald - Looked like he was just cruising. Not much defensive intent and got caught out ball watching a couple of times on Martin and Cotching. Had a couple of nice intercept marks though. His kicking wasn't crash hot either, long down the line is about the only kick in his play book.

X - Thought he was very poor, compressively beaten by Nankervis. Didn't have much impact around the ground and didn't have much grunt around the contest. Uninspiring. I think CCJ is ahead of him due to his ability to play forward.

Scott - No Impact.

Curtis - Disappointing. Was expecting big things after last weeks intra club. Was caught behind Vlastuin a number of times in the first half. Had a few nice touches that resulted in shots on goal, but overall only had limited impact.

Perez - Desperately want him to take his game to another level but based on today's output it doesn't look like it'll happen any time soon. No impact, looked slow-ish, and couldn't accumulate the footy. Can't fault his courage or defensive intent though. After today's showing I'd suggest he is behind a few.

McKay - Got beaten by Samson Ryan on multiple occasions, looks a bit disinterested and really just didn't have much intent. Dropped a couple of contested marks that he probably should have spoiled.

Very enjoyable to watch.

Enjoyed watching a few set-ups we have for carrying the ball by hand near to the boundary (particularly one from the kick-in), they executed it pretty well.

Some player is sheezel. I know they want to see him off half back, but that kind of finishing and creation in the forward line will be bloody hard to ignore.

Think you've covered alot of it, but thought Perez and Ziebell were both absolutely shocking today.

Perez might look like a man mountain on the weights, but players just walk through his tackles at will and have done for most of his AFL games to date.

Ziebell was diabolical. Everytime someone was within 5m of him it was a paniced kick slammed on the boot with his head down. Compare it to Philips, who is always calm in possession, head up, looking for a quick handball and taking a moment to assess the best options. Jack needs to realise it's far quicker to handball it that it is to throw the ball on his boot, he's been doing it for 6-7 years and opposition half backs just eat it up...

I'm probably not as bullish on Zurhaars game as you, I thought he displayed a lot of his short commings as a player again today, just takes an extra bounce too many at times and never gives to a runner when in position, he's still on the selfish side of being a footballer.

Don't want to dwell too much on the negatives as I thought there were plenty of positives also. Our ball movement was infinitely better than last year.

I agree mate. I didn't want to go hard too hard on them because it was practice match but the two of them and X were probably the worst 3 on the ground. Young showed more in 5 minutes than Ziebell did all game. Jack just has no composure at all and always resorts to bombing it long. He has a beautiful kicking technique, but has no composure that allows him to use it. Opponents would know that as soon as they get 3-4m on him they'll have him beat, same as any player that gets out the back on him, only takes 1-2m of separation and he is never going to catch them. The game passed him by 3 years ago.

I thought X was really good, very competitive
liking Z in the middle, makes an impact
ldu close to superstar, has great hand skills that I hadn’t noticed before
curtis is a gun, phillips a mid who tackles blokes, who knew
and what about Goater, will walk into the 22

be a big surprise if Corr is not best 22/23 so the backline is a real work in progress

We need to reel the expectations on Paul Curtis in a little. He’s 19, in his 2nd season and played 10 games. There’ll be ups and downs for a while yet.

He still did some nice things today.
Shut up, All-australian or bust.

Why doesn’t anyone lead toward the ball carrier? Especially the forwards. We need to introduce more short kicks to keep the opposition honest. It was all run handball and long kicks.

Obviously hard to see on the screen but always seemed to be kicking to long options where 2-3 KP talls were competing. Need to start working on leading patterns for Charlie and Larks.

Just finished watching.

Thought X and Boner were the standouts from the fringe players. Goat was great too.

Recon we got sucked into playing the wind when going right of screen. Looked better without the wind, and just bombed it in with it. Dumb stuff.

JZ's disposal is an absolute liability. Problem is he gets a heap of ball. We need him to collect possessions, but every time he gets it it's a turn over or a 15m chip sideways.

LDUs disposal wasn't great today either but recon that'll tidy up in the next few weeks.

Curtis didn't look himself today? Didn't chase hard, looked a little lazy. His creative kicking was great though, just needs to lift the intensity.

Overall was a fun game. Great to see footy back 👍

Opposition sides may play closer attention to him this year hence he may be against better quality direct opponent eg Vlastuin.
