I can only call the decision to play Stokes as a sub a total masterstroke. Coaches would absolutely drool about getting that kind if impact in the second half.

He'll start next week and maybe Duncan or Caddy or Christensen will take their turn.
Does anyone know if he was just sore? Given he played so well against Hawthorn...

That's about it!!!!!!!...........No more bull shite about Matthew Stokes....saved the game........get it right MC........29 possessions last week and gets dropped to the sub.......YOU MUST BE JOKING! get a life ETC, ETC.......... start him in the guts and just watch him do his stuff!!

Thanks Matt for the GAME!!!:thumbsu:

I think you may need to stop keeping the Jack Daniels next to the keyboard...

CS definitely has a new role for Stokesy this year. He has played it to perfection in the first two weeks. Utilises his foot skills and decision making to link transition from back to front half. Still bringing his trademark courage and tenacity at the contest and seems to be more productive that last year. It is freeing up Smedts, Murdoch, Motlop, Varcoe, Chapman and Bundy to play small forward and they all offer something different to stretch defences. Based on what I have seen in pre-season and first two rounds this could be a masterstroke.

Rotation by Scott with the 6 day breaks. Perfect result too - he did EXACTLY what you wish a sub can do. I don't like the argument that we struggled without him because there were 21 mates who should have done much better in the first half.
I agree completely. Like the idea of proactive player management, it beats dealing with fatigue later.

Has nothing to do with it.
Scotty was burned by the sub last week so went with a player who he felt could perform straight away coming into the game. He went with his best option, Stokes, who did it 100% perfectly.
He wasnt "dropped".

I am re-assessing Stokesy. I have found it hard to warm to him in the past, but last week and today were worthy of great respect.
He is a gun!

He gave me a warm feeling in the Port game at KP in his first? second? game when he kicked 3 goals and won us the game (Port were good back then). Never been anything less than lukewarm since... Always puts his body on the line. Team first ethos. You may even feel a slight burn if he keeps this form up through 2013!

The man lives, breathes and completely believes Geelong. We have no man more committed to team and club.

I can forgive a lot of faults for a good man with an honest heart, and he's shown the ability to learn from past mistakes and take responsibility for and learn from his errors in judgement. The fact that he's been unleashed into the guts of any game is a further sign of Scotty's respect for the man, and keeping him as our ace up the sleeve sure as hell went a very long way towards our win against Norfs. He's not one to back off from anybody or anything, and I can see some of the pretty boy mids of this league getting utterly crashed, smashed and trashed by our li'l big man, Stoker.

Much respect.

I'll never forget when he got into that jumper choke with Justin Kosinski, he was giving away 20cms, it was the big guy who looked in a little trouble in the end.:D

I seriously doubt anyone could have queries about him being in our best 21 if he continues on with R1,R2 form.

As a 28 year old he appears to be ready to have an impact on the midfield , is it he is finally ready or is it he is finally getting a chance? I'm not sure but his position on the field has always been my main gripe with him Somehow this has been deciphered as dislike or grudge from previous misdemeanors or playing when not fit in big games. All these thing could easily been labelled at SJ and others as well. Its not any of these. My main gripe has always been that he was not contributing enough in the middle, when others were starting to struggle , when our side needed a midfield addition. When our side need to add youth. To play a senior player as good solid FP in a side we are trying to infuse new blood is not ideal. Alternatively , him playing midfield has seen us play Smedts and Caddy , and him playing midfield has unleashed him in a way that I could only hope. Bonus X2

If he can bring what he showed at Etihad to his game every week , if he could translate his SUB form to a full game , who knows what or where he may finish the season. Do I still have some doubts. Probably because he is reaching breaking thru to new level. Playing like he did will draw attention , Ablett like attention , how will he handle that?

One game at a time. Lets hope Carlton gets Stoked this week.

I reckon Matt will have to produce the numbers week by week to warrant the support he's now receiving, he's not the type that can hide behind mediocrity.
I'm confident Stoksey can produce big stat numbers as putting his head over the pill has never been a problem for him, just having to fly for marks against 190cm opponents in the past has.
In the past inept efforts from our tall forwards or lack of talls up forward placed him in the unenviable position of a spot up marking target, bout time he got a chance elsewhere.

It's a great story, draft after draft he was over looked, thought he'd never get a crack then FINALLY a club has a punt with pick 61 and he turns into a 2 time (will be 3 come the end of the year) premiership player and member of one of the all time great teams.

You would have thought that wouldn't you? From what I can see a fair few haven't. You could say the same when he withdrew himself from selection for the 2009 GF too.

Not to mention Stokesy refusing to go off in the dying stages of the 2011 grand final as he missed 2009, only to change his mind when the runner said it was so they could get Lingy back on. :thumbsu:
