Another massive game from Matty tonight. At one point I wondered if there was more than one of him out there, since he seemed to be everywhere. It's been a sensational start to the year, I hope it's a sign of more to come.

reinvigorated and playing further up the ground, he's now found his preferred niche in this champion unit.
No surprises Scott and the match committee made this one work and credit to Stokesy for elevating his game.

Fans asking for West, Corey, Stokes to move aside are now being silenced. Integral part of our success and 3-0 to start off 2013, you beauty! :thumbsu:

There's something different this year he has an increased work ethic enhanced spirit and desire for the contested ball

They've always been the 3 key elements of his approach (and why he's been so highly regarded by the club and observant supporters), he just seems to have got them all together at the one time in one of those purple patches that sportsmen dream of.

Congratulations to Matt, he's definitely in career-best form now, so all credit to him for the hard work he's put in. It also helps having him play less in the forward pocket.

It was interesting to read in the Addy article how unhappy he was with his own form last season, and the steps he took to improve it over the pre-season.

"I had a really bad season," Stokes admitted. "
I was really disgusted with some of the games I played last year."
"I was disappointed about the way I went about my footy and the way I was playing." .
"I wanted to improve. I did a lot of things in the pre-season I didn't do last year," Stokes said.
"I watched a lot of tapes with the coaches and worked a bit on my speed. It feels at the moment that it is all going well.
"I think when you stop learning at AFL level the game is probably going past you. I did that extra work with the coaches and understanding the game a little bit more."

His extra work is certainly paying off in spades at the moment. Probably best or near-best on ground against Carlton, and he's played the link-up man in our ball movement from the back line to perfection.

We're being silenced by Stokes, I'll admit that. Corey has a lot to do to appease those of us who believe he is just about past it. Have never put the boot into West. I reckon he's done well thus far considering his experience.

Anyway, really happy that Stokes appears so reinvigorated. Props to the coaches too for changing his role.

He is playing that linkup good ball user through the middle role perfectly.
Credit to him and exciting for us fans!

Midfield people, therein lies the vital point.

As I said at one stage last season, he becomes too stagnant standing in a pocket, and seems to lose interest somewhat.

He's able to use his creativity and poise roaming through the middle, and I for one aren't one bit surprised with his exceptional start to the season.

Well done little fella.:thumbsu:

Yep, pretty much exactly the same here. I thought Stokes' best footy was behind him, I'm still holding my breath on Corey, and have never been unduly critical of West (he hasn't even played 50 games yet!).

To me Stokes is playing the most intelligent footy he ever has for us; he's not trying to do too much, he's not trying to kick goal of the year, he's not trying to run around 3 opponents. He's endlessly presenting, and finding teammates with precise disposal just about every time he gets it. Amazing when you eliminate errors from your game how good you suddenly look. Credit totally to him and very happy to be proven wrong. :thumbsu:

Inspired move to play Stokes in a more midfield role.

Corey has played ok in the last 2 games in the 2nd halves - when the game is quick in the first hour he is still getting found out. I admire the guy immensely but we can't keep going like this. Continuing to play him down back isn't helping his cause either. Has to be played as part of the midfield rotation or not at all IMO.
