Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

So you don't think he has improved the culture at all since taking over?
He's tried but I think the club's cultural issues and philosophies are almost beyond repair at this point.

We're as bad as the Redbacks.

Which part do you disagree with? Do you think Ken is a good tactician?

Why has Ken suddenly become this highly regarded coach on this board? I know Nicks has probably lowered our expectations on what a good coach is but that doesn't change the fact that Ken hasn't achieved anything significant in 10 years as a senior coach.

Don’t be so daft.

You know very well that Ken’s record is light years ahead, so stop this performative drivel

It’s as tedious as it is wrong

Both are good at building a good culture and having the playing group love them, but both are terrible tactical coaches. Ports only good years are when they had a good tactician next to Ken in the coaches box. Once they left Ken went back to being clueless and Port dropped back down the ladder.

Ken is now the longest serving coach in AFL history to not make a grand final. His resume isn't anything to aspire to. In any other AFL team he would have been sacked years ago.

At the end of the day neither have won anything.

To what extent is Nicks' good culture just allowing players to be happy not being demanded to perform at their peak levels? Combined with lack of pressure on his own performance. I've been posting since 2020 tha5 there's a chance the 'culture' he built is a house of cards. We've seen a snippet here and there and now we've got him blaming the players weekly. Testing times ahead.

How can you call an environment where people don’t perform a good culture?

Easier to retain players when no one else wants them. Neil Craig was far better than Nicks. Sure, no premierships (but he was instrumental in our 97/98 flags) but I remember winning our first minor premiership under craig, and winning our first spoon under nicks.

It's a huge disservice to Craig to compare him to the abomination that's Nicks.

We also have a lot of players that can’t kick and senior players ready to depart. We are miles away when you compare us to other clubs in a similar position. There’s a few out there with young gun midfields which will carry them for the next 10 years. Now they can just concentrate on other areas

If all that is true then why are you so anti Nicks, if you think he doesn't have the cattle?

Honestly the only senior player worth his salt who is retiring soon is Tex.

Sloane is done, Smith is a liability and Laird is massively overrated.

The problem is that Nicks is fixed on playing the same failed players and only letting young players play bit roles and constantly dropping them and never giving them responsibility in a major role.

Port went from getting thrashed by 160 points in consecutive weeks to making a prelim three years later under a new coach and putting faith into their younger players.

I don't think we're a write-off but we need a new coach ASAP

Because he’s stuck in the past playing a game plan that sucks. He’s turned our strength into a weakness.

We’ve got players horribly out of form and confidence and that’s coaching.

His selections suck.
His midfield at up sucks.

Our drafting hasn’t been up the other teams level so no matter what a new coach does, there’s a lot of catching up to other teams midfields

I can't remember exactly but when was the "apology presser" from Nick's.. and how long until we're back there.

Nicks is scared shitless of trying anything different and his gameplan just doesn't stack up against the current fast moving gameplan that's other teams are now using.

Even Blight said this week that he'd go with Rachele, Rakine and Soligo in the middle.

Personally Id rather lose by 10 goals seeing them given a go than a 20 point loss going with the same garbage game plan full of inside mids with about 6 players around the contest obsessed with winning contested ball and doing nothing with it.
