Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

Way too early to re-sign Nicks.

Making Finals this year is a must.

Wait untill it looks like we qualify, ie August, to re-sign him.

He has been the right coach for this rebuild period. But we need to see if he is good enough to win the key moments.

Coaching is essentially teaching. We lost a lot of close games, many say close games are luck. However, look at Collingwood and how they close out games. That is 100% coaching/teaching. The ability to create a ganeplan and then teach it to the players to implement.

Nicks needs to show he is capable of teaching our guys how to control and win key moments to take the next step.

Right now, hard to say either way. This year is the year to show that.

I think controlling the tempo of the game helps us greatly.

We're a hard running, hard tackling and hard contest team. We were often over run in our losses both close and by bigger margins. Having the team skill and experience to slow the game at times helps keep something more in the tank for Q4. It might also prevent the oppo getting on a run (which also occurred too regularly last year).

I think there's more to it than hoping for a bit more luck with the "close ones" this year.

P.s... improved set shot accuracy would help too.

We are tracking the right direction, but there is no good reason to rush the decision until we are confident we are tracking for finals action.

Feels like it's the goal kicking for me... Lots of games last year we lost by missing a whole pile of gettable goals. And then in other games we were super accurate.
Just a few of those go through the sticks and it's quite different.

It was strange in the last interview we saw with Nicks that he said something about the two options of “before round 1” or “at a later date”.

Made me think it had already happened and will be announced before round 1.

If youre a decision making pussy, then it makes sense to sign him before the season start, saves you having to potentially make uncomfortable calls later in the season.
It's a fait accompli, I'm not sure why we are trying to speculate there's a chance we'd wait and see in the scenario we have a poor year.

That post wasn’t speculating, it’s was passing an opinion on those making the decision
Thanks George, what would Carmo do without you??

It was an opinion based on a scenario (i.e. a speculative position to re-sign early) played out by a group of (speculative) pussies (if said decision was made).

I then posted my opinion, that said speculative position was likely already a done deal.

Look Carmo is one of the last posters I’d go into bat for, but your read of his post was wrong, consider it me trying to help you out more than anything ;)

So I'm now at the bargaining stage of grief. Is there a way we can write his contract so early termination would cost less?

I couldn't agree more, all contracts should be as such, not just the poor clubs. I thought they were, given what happened at St Kilda last year, but I've been informed this is not the case.

I.e. if performance by the end of 2025 is such that we have not made finals for 2024 and 2025 (7 years?), early termination shall be possible without penalty, as determined by the board.

Surely Nicks would sign that, it's a minimum requirement.

I don't know if he'd sign it. I don't know how contract stuff works. That's what makes these discussions frustrating. The only thing we'll know for sure is the years. We don't ever know the fine print.

If they had that wouldn’t it send a message to the coach saying they’re not 100% convinced with him and if that’s the case why would they want to even enter negotiations?
The only reasons to re-sign early are to
1. Stop him being poached (lol)
2. Fear of the media or supporters harassing them ( weak)
3. Nicks has a picture of the board and several goats all together ( possible)
4. They are happy with his performance and want to extend. ( almost certain)

The main issue is not one club would try and poach him.

Why the rush?

Yeah, the only coaches ever in danger of being poached are those who’ve won flags

Clarkson, Dimma, Scott

Never those who spook clubs into signing them

Agreed. He can point to the goal umpire and say ' if this was in my contract last year I would be out of a job '

Don’t think Nicksy would want to do the whole rebuild thing over again.

If he gets sacked for not making finals this year he won't get another job.

We're approaching all time records for games coached without ever making finals, surely.
