Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Disagree 100%.

He WAS the perfect guy at the end of 2019. He has returned stability, built a pretty solid culture and the team plays for him.

Personally, I don't think he is the guy that should keep going though. I think he lacks footy smarts and it would be best for someone to take over from here.

Disagree 101%. If we’d gotten nearly any other coach ie Macrae, they’d have been perfect too. Being not Pyke is a feature that 99% of coaches exhibited.

This one probably isn't so much on Nicks himself as it's been similar to our other appointed coaches of late but I'm envious of seeing Clarko come in and in a week they're moving on from their footy boss, an assistant and development coach.

Mightn't even be a cross on the guys moved on but more him bringing in some people he wants to be around. Our newly appointed coaches seem to get stuck with what comes with the joint, do wonder how much this is getting someone with some proper experience like Clarko who knows what he wants and would demand it.

Viney has been out of the game for a year or two so wasn’t tied to anyone - makes it easier

And Clarkson and North have had a fair amount of time to prepare. I think Clarko would have worded up some of his contacts months ago that he was likely to coach this year somewhere and would they join him

That wasn’t new, he’d used it the year before. It’s purely about minimising damage. It’s the same s**t, just with a layer of time wasting added. Funny when I heard VB say they had levers they could pull to open up the game. Yeh mate, we’ve all seen Dawson released up the ground too.

I am not endorsing it as a brilliant move. Instead pointing out that Nicks isn't as rigid as many on here suggest.

So he has plan A and slow plan A. I’ll concede he’s made the a few more positional moves than Neil Pyke, I mean Don Craig, did. But then he reverts. Keays to forward, brilliant game, then back to guts week after. In a developing/rebuilding side, he’s favoured continuity far too often.

And still refuses to deepen our midfield rotations. I accepted there were valid reasons last year, but not this year. The continuity imperative extends to midfield strategy. That alone consigns him to certain failure as a senior coach.

Listen to the first 5 minutes ....explains why contested players are king in Finals and why the outside players like Sholl and Newchurch dry up

So you can see why Nicks is putting so much emphasis on winning contests, with a very young list

Don’t think anyone has an issue with a focus on individuals winning contests, it’s when he gives the illusion of winning contests by pushing up forwards around the ball an emptying our forward line. It gives the illusion of winning contests but unless you’re going to maintain that what’s the point? And if you are going to maintain you’ve adopted a defensive game plan and given the forward line we are building that would be madness.

So in the end what have you taught your players?

Did the video support this game plan by Nicks?

But you also need outside class able to break lines and deliver the ball to your forwards quickly.

Kind of a chicken and egg argument from King. He’s not wrong but he’s out of context.

They dry up only if the blokes on the inside are being beaten.

If McLeod, Bickley and Johnson are winning the ball, guess who cleans up on the outside?

Couple of blokes called Thiessen and Eccles.

Your outside players don’t need to be world-beaters, they just need to be able to USE the ball.

Can ours??

What game have you been watching for the last 20 years, there is no such thing as a stay at home forward anymore.

What he really meant is we put extras up at the around the ball contest. Leaving us short up forward and down in defense. We don't empty our forwardline of people altogether but we empty it of a numbers advantage.

Us Crows supporters analyse every decision, our Coach makes .....people question Nicks, but can you imagine RICH supporters today ......3 x Premiership Coach, who ALL YEAR has refused to tag

Opposition's best MID's have had field days against RICH ......last night it cost RICH a Finals Match ....if that were Nicks, we could add another 20 pages to this thread

Hawkins does not exclusively stay in the F50, he gets up the ground quite often during a game and covers a lot of territory. Sure, he’s not Cameron in that regard, but he doesn’t just sit within the F50 all game.

This story is paywalled is anyone able to post please. I have posted the entire extract I'm able to see below.

Inside the rebuild: Can Nicks really save the Crows?
.
As Matthew Nicks says ''progression is not always obvious'' - but is it really there at the Crows?

He addresses the elephant in the room, and we analyze the rebuild three years in.

We’ll max out at bottom of the 8 under him, he’ll never be a flag coach. Too risk averse.

It's a nothing article that just rehashes a bunch of old quotes. No analysis or insight involved.

I think he will be sacked at the end of 2023 if he doesn't drastically improve the team. The Collingwood coach demonstrated that a decent coach can have a big impact on a clubs fortunes.

You can’t just ignore list profile when comparing coaches.

I’m ok with an 8-10 win 2023 as long as we see continued growth in the likes of Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Berry, Soligo, Rachele, Butts, Murray, Jones, Worrell, Pedlar, Taylor, Parnell, Cook, Hamill, Nank.

2024 is when we need to sustainably spike - finals or seeya Nicks.

We shouldn’t be extending his contact until we’ve qualified for finals, either.
