Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

You can’t just ignore list profile when comparing coaches.

I’m ok with an 8-10 win 2023 as long as we see continued growth in the likes of Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Berry, Soligo, Rachele, Butts, Murray, Jones, Worrell, Pedlar, Taylor, Parnell, Cook, Hamill, Nank.

2024 is when we need to sustainably spike - finals or seeya Nicks.

We shouldn’t be extending his contact until we’ve qualified for finals, either.
Agree wit hthe above, but 10 wins minimum for me. Don't think I can accept 13-14 honourable losses anymore.

I just don't see how Nicks gets a 5th year with another 8 win season.

The jungle drums have already started to sound this year that the club haven't been happy with the lack of progress. I suspect that if 2023 is a repeat of 2022, he's done.

He needs to ditch this defence first mantra then, cause we aren't improving with it.

Personally I would have sacked him at the of 2022.

Honestly I don't think we're going anywhere under him and it's going to take a miracle for him to still be coaching us in 2024.

2023 - 13th (9w)
2024 - 12th (10w)
2025 - 11th (11w)

Patience anyone?

All about games played within the squad - which is why sides eventually have a real jump up the ladder. Our year for a big jump should 2024 - next year should be another year of some good wins against top 8 sides, settle down our defence, develop our midfield further and start getting games together for our hopefully elite forward line

I think he will be sacked at the end of 2023 if he doesn't drastically improve the team. The Collingwood coach demonstrated that a decent coach can have a big impact on a clubs fortunes.

Macrae did a Sando - new voice for the quality experienced core and a couple of gun youngsters coming through. Highly doubt they make the 8 next year

We would have to go well backwards to sack him next year. 100/1 that he doesn’t see out the year

Roo has called out Nicks a couple of times during commentary. He was way harsher about him than pretty much anybody else in the footy media. I doubt conversations with Olsen/Silvers would be fun for him. I noticed Nicks looked pretty wrecked in the back half of the season. Looked like he hadn't been sleeping. Put that under speculation though.

Where is this coming from? Messaging from the club has been they are happy with the progress

What more did you expect from 2022?

Sloane and Seedsman played diddly squat between them and although took longer than we all wanted, Crouch was moved out of the XXII.

From the youngest group in the league - what should have been achieved?

Roo's the last person who should be throwing stones at someone's performance in their role.

Sloane missing was a positive.

Recruitment is bad and the list looks like a piece of swiss cheese so I guess that means Nicks gets to stay for life.

You think the list is poor so sack the coach?.
Surely you only sack a coach if you think he is doing a poor job with the list he has been given. At the moment I don’t think anyone else is getting much more out of our squad. That changes as they get more experience and therefore the bar is lifted for Nicks - heat comes on him as of 2024
