Why? I'm just replying to speculation he should be tried there. Will never happen, he's not equipped for it.

Why because you think he isn’t?

It’s the tank that the issue. Everything else is fine - see Chris Mayne.

His best role is the one he currently plays in the team. He reads the ball relatively well and as a defender is suspect there’s more straight line running rather than twisting and turning which, considering his knees is preferable.

He just needs to be a better defender than others competing for that role. Simple as that.

Chris Mayne is not an inside mid and never in the middle... and Mayne has a lot more agility and speed than Scharenberg so he can play wing role. Scharenberg is never getting out of the backline.

Scharenberg has ten times more ability "to football" than Chris Mayne.

If you say so but Scharenberg has no versatility.
I think you’re selling him short.

He’s got that quality of class and poise.

He may not leave the backline but that doesn’t matter. If he got a good continuity of games he’d be a fixture in the team.

He’s a keeper.

Ps he’s not actually slow he’s normal
Speed. But he does move the ball to correct advantage.

Where else can you play Mayne but on a wing?

Cant play forward, only kicked 10 goals in three years.

Cant play back, remember the intercept sitter mark in his 200th game where he managed to drop it with no contact and then het his vertebrae broken?

If Mayne didn't have a four year contract he wouldn't even be in the side even after his "reinvention".

you dont need to pot Mayne to support your boy, Mayne has played 215+ games, played in 2 teams that made gf's while playing completely different roles for those grand final teams. Clearly is versatile.

I'm not saying he's a bad player, he just doesn't have what it takes to get out of the backline. He would get showed up for pace, agility, tank. Plenty of good players never left the backline. He's a punch first defender, that's what he is and his injuries probably have stopped him becoming anything more.

you forgot to mention his award for falcon of the year in against West Coast in the first final....

Only that goes against accepted knowledge he is now one of the first person picked. He started his career as a defensive forward.

Are you talking about when he put his body on the line with seconds to go and got poleaxed?

Mayne is used to plug holes anywhere he is needed.

No Im talking about his 200th game where he sat underneath a high ball and dropped the sitter 30 seconds into the game and then tried to win the ball back and got poleaxed.

I think you're underselling him big fella.
He plays in multiple positions.
Defensive forward, (McGovern) or goes back if we lose one of our backmen.

no I am talking about 2019 where you say Mayne isnt versatile yet Scharenberg was actually the one dropped for a final because he had no match up

A young guy is brutally knocked unconscious a quarter into a game in a marking contest and doesn't recover in time for the next week and you call that getting dropped... get a clue.

Well this is a fun shitfight

sirlothie no one is going to give a flying **** if you bump your post when Shaz retires. And that could be in ten years. What a strange thing to want to hang your hat on.

As for the Mayne versatility shitfight - given he was recruited as a defensive forward, became a target in Fremantle’s forwardline, and has at various stages played half back, half forward and sing for us indicates that he is indeed versatile. The better question is whether he remains versatile or whether he is now only capable of playing wing and as a stopgap defender to an AFL standard. Tarkyn Lockyer was versatile but when the end came he was found wanting, playing only the half forward flank to a borderline AFL standard. Time changes everything.

I think you’re being a bit precious/protective. Shaz was almost certainly in the selection mix and fit to play after two weeks off. Simply he didn’t have a match up in that Geelong side.

He should definitely have one vs GWS so tomorrow we get the truest indication possible as to where our coaching staff see him.
