You're right. It's been pretty clear for the best part of 3 years that the club don't rate Shaz as highly as many on this board do, so it's almost certain that they just think the 22 is better with someone else in. I just like sticking up for the benefit of the doubt, even when the doubt is extremely doubtful.

The club rated him very highly, but after 3 knee recos you have to be realistic, he is never going to get to the level he promised in his junior days. Right now he is average speed with poor agility and a poor tank, okay stopper and okay at rebounding but nothing special. I'm happy Aish is in over him

Yeah they can't rate at all, which of course is why they have kept him on the list through 3 ACL's

PFFFFT

He just hasn't been able to get a decent preseason - so nah they rate him but are realistic in what he can provide at this stage of his career.
I didn't say that the club didn't rate him. I just said that they didn't rate him as highly as many on this board do. Based on selections over the last 3 years, the club has treated him as a fringe player, whereas many on this board have viewed him as a definite best 22 and have been disappointed/angry when he has missed selection.

It could have been a factor though. For a border line decision, you might end up choosing the bloke who isn't coming back from concussion. Personally though I think it's as simple as they currently view him as an aerial defender. He's behind Moore, Roughhead and Howe and we don't need a fourth defender who specialises in the air.
Good to have your balanced analysis back. Makes a change from the edgy, point scoring style of some other types on the board. Not that I really have a problem with any of them, but I prefer your approach to disseminating football knowledge and opinions.

Well he has been injured a lot, and that automatically elevates you to “best 22 if fit” status.

I actually really like the full range of posting styles. It's like a country pub at 1 am. One minute we're making dick jokes. Then we're having deadly serious conversations that are sometimes meaningful and sometimes utter shite. Then we're cracking it at each other for no apparent reason, before reverting to dick jokes. Meanwhile there's always a couple of blokes roaming around looking for a fight. Then all of a sudden from nowhere Bad Horse chimes in with some poetic genius.

That's why I don't ignore posters because there are none of whom I truly object.

Cox is playing?

Yep. The crazy stuff is often the most entertaining, which is why I'm so gutted that Jesse Pinkman, Sam Murray has been delisted.
If there was one person I just never liked in breaking bad it was Pinkman.
What a dweeb.

Then again never liked Hank either.

But I digress.

Unfortunately for Matthew, he’ll just need a big preseason and an uninterrupted season to showcase his best.

I’d have taken him in the side, even taking in Aish over Brown.

But they have Keeffe in, that’s them going for very average talent.

No. Which confirms my suspicion that he was one our your tips for a massive breakout year.
Alas he didn’t perform for long enough.

I had Murphy as my break out player.

Back to Cox, imagine him playing in an eye patch.

Because we've seen it before, I never thought I'd be happily looking forward to the prospect of Keeffe playing forward/ruck in a final. Are they really going to try to get water from that drought stricken well, or are they going to play him in defence - they don't need him there either?

He’s just a really tall guy.

Average talent, like Madgen but even taller.

Talent wise he should be best 22 but those ACL's and foot surgery have robbed him of a decent career - think he has only had the one decent preseason in his entire senior career.

Sad for the bloke who had tremendous talent and upside when drafted but a list spot is a list spot, there are only so many to go around.

I think this final snub will see him pack his bag for greener pastures looking for a fresh start.

He should give it one more year. Do a preseason and maybe work on areas which will give him some flexibility to play a different role.

Once Langdon is back, you would think Shaz drops back again in the order.

The backline is becoming stacked with talent. In another year or 2, you will have Kelly and Murphy coming through fighting for that similar position.

I’m sure end of season there will be a discussion. If I was Shaz, i’d Be asking the question whether the club can see him playing away from the backline and what he needs to work on in order to play that role.

Right now, he is only a backup defender.

I'm not too sure why posters think his omission is some great portent to his future at the Pies, or a representation of how the club views him. He's coming off his 3rd ACL. That he's played any senior footy this year and acquitted himself well enough to be in the frame for selection now is purely a bonus. Look for him to have a much bigger season in 2020.

I just had to remind myself that he did his knee in Rd 19 last year. Plenty of upside for him next year.

All true, agree he hasn’t done much wrong and has upside, but it’s a numbers thing. With Langdon Quaynor Murphy and Greenwood in the wings there’s going to be a lot of competition for spots in 2020. Only Greenwood and Roughead are in the later stage of their careers so future vacancies will be few assuming they stay injury free

Big fan of Shazza's talent and how hard he's worked to overcome so many injuries. I admire how he just quietly goes about it, without any fanfare. I certainly don't want him to go anywhere.

But I have to admit that if I were him, the side were to overcome the Giants and I wasn't picked in the 22 to play the GF, I would consider it time to look at other clubs. Maybe get a two year deal, preferably in my home state, and see what I can achieve.

Like I said, I hope he doesn't do it as I'm a fan, but none of us could blame him if he went.

I'm not disappointed Cox isn't playing to be honest but the thought of him taking hangers against Richmond in the GF to get us home with an eye patch would just about make my footy watching and Collingwood supporting life.
