Maxwell faces 3 weeks

First let me say I don't think Maxwell should be suspended for that but we need some clarity here:

Apparently only the tip of Maxwell's shoulder hit McGinnity's chin. Corrie clearly applied a force to McGinnity mere split-seconds prior to the bump.

I don't think it matters if it is only the tip of the shoulder that hit the chin. The fact remains that the chin was hit.

So Setanta knocks out his own team mate, and kicks him while he is down.. in a intra club game and gets 4 weeks.. and maxwell does a fairly legal bump, but resulting in a broken jaw, and receives 3... joke.

The only thing that would've stuffed maxwell up would've been he didn't really have eyes for the ball.

I'm not sure if there is a term 'fairly legal'. It's either legal or it's not. 'Fairly legal' sounds like a defence for sleeping with a 16 year old!

It seems to me that any contact to the head was unintentional as he didn't jump in the air or raise his arms etc. It was at worst a slight miscalculation that can occur in a split second. It certainly wasn't thuggery.

It is clear to me that the only reason he has been wiped out is the injury. I'm a 100% sure that nothing would have come of this otherwise.

It may have been unintentional but he still hit him in the head and that is what the AFL has chosen to clamp down on and where Maxwell has hit trouble. If you are going to dish out a hip and shoulder from now on you have the responsibility to make sure you do everything possible to not hit the head.

The best chance here will be to use Corrie's push on McGinnity as the defence as it does look like it may have pushed McGinnity off balance. Maxwell has no control over that.

I don't think the majority of us are upset at how the MRP have interpreted the rules. There was obviously some form of head contact, albeit unintentional, and if that warrants three weeks, then that's the AFL's view and they have no choice but to suspend him.

My main gripe is that those soft and pathetic rules are there at all. The precadent has been set for the remainder of the season now, and it's a terrible one.

Maxwell being suspended has pretty much spelt the end of the hip and shoulder for me. There's only a matter of centimeters between 3 weeks and play on, ridiculous.

You can NEVER have a blanket rule such as 'any head high contact is worth a suspension'. Common sense has to be used and ech case should be treated on it's merits. Maxwell's case was obviously a case that was head high, but obviously didn't deserve any suspension.

Coming from a Carlton supporter, you know something is wrong. I think it was a poor decision by the tribunal.

It happens every year, one player at the start of the year will get a huge suspension then, round 11 comes around and the same bump will get one week. Happened to Fremantle last year with Johnson, rubbed out for 4 weeks and then the same bump during the year was lucky to get 2 weeks.

Completely in agreeance. The problem is these guys have grown up with the hip and shoulder and it really is an instinct thing. Maxwell never set out to break the kid's jaw. He instinctively looked at the situation as a 2 on 1 and thought if he can take the opposition player out of play then Corrie gets a free run at it. If it was a 1 on 1 I have no doubt Maxwell would have taken the ball and McGinnity out of play.

In my view Maxwell did nothing wrong and it's accidental contact to the head. Unfortunately the AFL and I do not have the same view.

Smiddaz123 and Well Left have summed it up perfectly.

Unfortunately under todays rules any contact to the head and you are
in trouble.

For 3 years now this silly interpretation has been in effect, and unfortunately good hip and shoulders are no longer safe to excute if you get opponent head high.

I thought Maxwell would only get two weeks but when you see the medical report on McGinnity, it isn't pretty the kid will be out 8 to 10 weeks eating through a straw.

The severity of the damage probaly gave Maxwell that extra week.

i'm embarassed to even have this bloke as a captain after this disgracful act. He is a HERO. not a footballer, and what a joke he wears the great mans number.

I think your being too harsh on Maxwell.

All our clubs have players that walk the edge of the rules.

We have Water's, you have Maxwell, Freo have Soloman.

Unfortunately these players are throw backs to an older era when such hits where lauded.

Head high contact as been ruled out these days, so I say you take the good with the bad with these type of players.

Cause for every suspension they get, they get alot of other hits right and there team mates walk taller with them on the field.

That's a tough, tough call. Yes the poor guy had his jaw broken but the bump was fair and the umpire plainly felt it was legit at the time.

I guess the AFL have a habit on making their stance on such events when they occur so early in a season.
