Opinion MCC membership - is it worth it?

Some people love their sport more than others, but be realistic about how many times you're actually going to go and compare it to buying tickets individually, or an EFC membership plus a few tickets to other games and a cricket match or two.

I had an AFL membership right up until I was about 22 and gave that up because I wasn't going too often (and my old man now wanted me to start paying for it).

If the Bombers start getting close to making a GF, I'll upgrade my membership for that year (along with everyone else I suppose). But I wouldn't be able to justify paying $500+ a year just in case we make the GF when we should make the GF about once every 9 years (by averages). But going by the previous 30 years, it's clear that there are 3-4 year windows of success, followed by possibly 20 years of none. I'd be happier taking the punt at the start of the year than having a membership for next year when I know we won't make the GF.

Not an MCC member myself, but my experiences surrounding the MCC have been thus far underwhelming.

People standing in the mud in a queue for an ANZAC Day seat, no beer in your seat as examples.

I mean, if I want to go to ANZAC Day, I can go. If I want to attend an Essendon Grand Final (when it happens in 2067 that is), I can. If I want to go to the Boxing Day test, I can.

In fact, many of the events that are considered hard to get in to, are they really? The MCC excuses its members of much of the PLANNING required.

I suppose the question I would ask, if the waiting period wasn't so extraordinarily long, would it still be considered as exclusive and desired? I'm guessing not - it doesn't really interest me.

Peasant.

Not to mention people sleeping overnight as an MCC member to "walk" into the grand final.

its worth it if you use it, $508 seems a lot but if you goto 1 pre-lim, the GF, 1 day of boxing day and a one-dayer youve covered the $508 easy.

Been to every grandfinal since 1993. Won't be giving mine up. Take the offer.

In every other area, you can only drink mid strength beer or half strength spirits, I'm taking a couple of beers at the bar at half time over drinking rubbish in my seat every day of the week.

The answer to you question is how much you attend and also are you happy to pay for convenience. I go to every essendon game at the mcg, probably 1-2 games a month that don't involve essendon, most of the finals at the g and then the odi's at the g, any international t20s, 3 or 4 days of the Boxing Day test and most of the other sporting events held there, ie. Recent soccer. In light of that it's a simple decision for me, it's ridiculously cheap. Whereas, if you don't necessarily go to every essendon game, pull the pin when we look like losing and aren't into other sports, then financially it may not be the most appealing.

That's a lot of travel from sale

For night games yes.

For daytime events the grog is full strength.

And in any case, there's bars around the G where you can go into and drink a proper stubby without taking it out, same as the MCC.

There's no getting around, the alcohol situation in the MCC is farcical.

Not so my friend.

this. just get it.

my favourite possession :thumbsu:
Best ticket in town - do it!
I'm an AFL full member and love that, but my 2 sons are full MCC members (nominated at birth) and when they ask me to join them at the footy, cricket or even soccer I'll go at the drop of a hat! Great view, balcony passes, padded seats there and best of all the Frankie Gray bar - not a better view in sport and beer in glass!
