McCarthy goes home

Yes, but just because your client doesn't want to return to a club doesn't mean that you negotiate in bad faith with them. Young started talking to Collingwood before talking to Melbourne at all. Mitch was training with Melbourne's fitness staff and was giving every indication publicly that he was returning to MFC, but privately Young starts negotiations with Collingwood despite this. Young doesn't advise that they should let Melbourne know first, he goes on radio instead and blasts the club on SEN for being garbage despite the MFC setting up every structure for Mitch to succeed. Mitch instead gets dragged through the shitter and ends up at an alternate club.

It was a slimeball act from a scumbag manager.

Now the same thing has happened. McCarthy says he wants to go home. Young goes and in bad faith negotiates a deal with Freo. The bombshell then drops just before the trade period. Freo works in bad faith with the Giants, but the Giants stand tough. Now McCarthy loses out because of it.

Now if McCarthy came forward earlier, and didn't have a deal signed already, you would have a different view. Same with Clark. Instead Young helps them both backstab clubs setting up support structures and mentoring them through tough times.

Can't argue with you with your first paragraph. Mitch Clark hasn't covered himself in glory either though.

Situation is a bit different with McCarthy. It was a bombshell for us, but not for GWS. He came forward privately half way through the year. Maybe they didn't believe him, or because their player welfare manager (Lambert, I believe) had left, there was no one to support McCarthy properly.
From what their coach said, McCarthy had a very happy persona around the club. It is quite possible that they just didn't believe that anything could be wrong because Cam didn't mope around.

Fremantle attempted to lure the exciting prospect home during last year’s trade period, but the Giants refused the Dockers’ offer of two first round draft picks for McCarthy.

The 193cm forward has been struggling with anxiety-related issues, but is understood to be physically strong after putting weight back on that he lost during a stressful trade period last October.

To you? nah not that much. More like 600-700k, and that was because we couldn't pay minimum 95% cap otherwise. But it's not like GWS fans let facts get in the way of a good story.

Says otherwise. But good on ya.

They have extracted an unprecedented $1 million salary subsidy for Griffen (over four years) from the Bulldogs, but in agreeing to trade Boyd, they signalled to their bevy of homesick stars — many of them out of contract at the end of 2015 — that normal rules do not apply.

The Western Bulldogs' former captain, Ryan Griffen, will remain the highest-paid player at the Whitten Oval next season despite walking out on the club post-season.

It has emerged that the Bulldogs will cover a staggering $800,000 of Griffen's 2015 pay packet as part of the extraordinary exit agreement reached with Greater Western Sydney, where Griffen requested to go.

Desperate to sign the apparently unavailable Tom Boyd from GWS, the club not only traded away its first draft pick to snare the promising young forward on a massive seven-year deal, but also agreed to cover $900,000 of Griffen's four-year Giants contract.

Facts you say...

Ok, fair enough then. Most of it was last year which did help us meet our minimum cap payments though. 100k over three years extra isn't anything to worry about though.

I think it all ended up last year. You guys are clean and clear with griff now.

That deal was perfect.

The dogs fans think theyve won. As do the Giants.

So if we accept this article as fact, there will be no more arguing as to whether Freo offered two first round draft picks for McCarthy?

No confirmation of the 9kgs. Would be good if he is back to his physical fitness. I still hold out hope that he can play football this season.

The 2 first rounders is irrelevant, there is a video from the CEO as to why he wasn't traded.

I never posted the 9kgs, you did. The article stats the weight was lost around trade week and he is back to health after putting weight back on since returning to training. Its your mob's supporters that are trying to claim he has lost the weight because of being in Sydney, that appears to be bullshit.

this thread sure is an interesting read. amazing how freo supporters have done a complete 180 in here:

some nice abuse in this one too:

Unrelated, but now that you bring it up:

Clark said publicly a move was nothing to do with money but with family and he wanted to come home, and gave a verbal contract with Freo. Then when a bigger dollar came on the table at the last minute, all that went out the window. Basically he burnt us, as we had no great opportunity to negotiate other deals we could have gone after. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...cure-mitch-clark/story-fn69a32t-1226167582864
We moved on, and did not make a play for him in 2014.

So in the trade period gone, if McCarthy signed with an Eastern States (or Adelaide) team after saying that, he would cop his fair share too. That did not happen.

Let him play in WAFL for the whole 2 year contract period earning WAFL wages. Let AFLPA put his health and well being on priority, close to family is the most important thing here for McCarthy.

He can get back on AFL list in 2018 - if he is any good then.

Pick 6 and Griffen (significantly less than your asking Freo to pay). Only difference was the FA part. Still stand by my point that Sunshine is not worth as much as Danger.

But you paid more for Boyd than we did for Danger? I am confused by your argument here, seems incredibly poorly thought out.

Pick 6 and Griffen is not less than I'm asking to Freo to pay, regardless. I've said he has value close to two top ten picks. Regardless of what you may or may not think of Griffen, he was still worth at least pick 15 when traded.

You should see what we say about Jesse Hogan.

Via the draft.

Yep, who knows - by then the 2 year maturity and the wage difference between WAFL/AFL would make this homesickness disappear in no time.

Patrick Veszpremi comes to mind
- Leaves sydney sighting homesickness blah blah blah
- Gets delisted from bulldogs later and he's suddenly all grown and mature, ready to play anywhere, just needs an opportunity. sigh.
McCarthy should give this bloke a ring. Will get to hear about a new level of anxiety which he hasn't experienced yet.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-05-22/this-is-real-life-now

While the 24-year-old was prepared for his AFL career to come to an end, Veszpremi admitted it was a struggle initially to piece together his life after football.

"At the start I didn't think it would be that hard," he said.

"Being part of the AFL world, it gives you a lot of experiences … but you can't just expect to be given a job.

"After leaving you have to go out, get a job, still pay your mortgage and then try to balance your whole life.

"It's been really hard for me, the first two months I struggled really badly there was a lot of stress but now everything's just starting to pick up."

i agree, unless GWS trade him

I think this is a great opportunity for GWS to show how much they care about their players

- refused to trade as they value him high - tick
- given more time with family - tick
- given indefinite time off - tick

Pending
- allow him to play state footy earning local wages, while covering only the "medical" expenses
- allow him to continue to be on their list, supporting him under the belief that he'll completely recover and be back within contract period.
- never delist him as he is worth more to them than other clubs
- let this drag on until end of 2017 just to show their unwavering belief and care they show to their players.

that scenario is likely

its a tough situation, their club is a bit of a tinder box. the slighest weakness or spark could see it go up in flames. hence why they have to take the tough stand they have. they have so many young talented players from interstate that were selected with very good draft draft picks, that other clubs would love to have. many of them playing in the NEAFL, away from the lime light of the AFL and without the traditional backing and attention of the VFL/SANFL/WAFL

its a very delicate situation to handle, especially when a player and his manager handle it so openly in the media, demanding to go to one club whilst contracted

GWS may not have got it perfect and may have made some mistakes, but i think they are doing their best by Cam and their Club and are doing fine over-all
