McCarthy goes home

Probably. I'm not involved in the process, but I'm sure they pressure their players to sign sometimes.

I'm guessing thats what you were referring to?

Yep.

Obviously they are looking out for their clients from a monetary sense, as they get a cut of it. So if Colin Young has pressured McCarthy into signing that extension in order to get a bit more coin in Colin Young's back pocket, you can start to see where problems occur. GWS have done nothing wrong here IMO.

I do. Crows got McCleod for peanuts due to freo being poorly run. Yet it wont be fair if we get McCarthy for nothing. The Tippet trade worked out brilliantly in the end.

The Crows got McLeod cheaply because Neesham didn't rate him and they wanted a tall forward in Chris Groom. There is nothing untoward about this and it has bears no similarity to the McCarthy situation at all.

The Tippett-saga is also an entirely different kettle of fish and I can't for the life of me figure out why you would bring it up other than to troll.

Also think it's pretty insulting for you to suggest GWS is "poorly run". Since when is expecting a player to fulfill their contract an example of being poorly run? GWS had all the leverage in the negotiations with Freo and would have been stupid to agree to anything less than what they wanted.

Yeah spot on.

Thats the thing, a contract is a contract, but the trouble is in the sports industry is that players can decide not to play for certain reasons and not get sacked.

I look forward to his miraculous recovery when he becomes a Docker in 2017. I guess it's a case of buyer beware with AFL clubs who choose to take a young bloke in the draft from one side of the country to the next and then re-sign him to an extension of his contract without due diligence. Surely somebody at GWS knew something was not quite right?
Australia is a big place, not everyone wants to live in Sydney. Paul Keating once said "if you don't live in Sydney, you're on holiday" Well, some people like to be on holiday all the time! The whole thing is a mess that should've been resolved last October, but clubs make huge investments with these kids and when something like this happens it's a major blow as they go back to the drawing board. It's always fraught with danger picking kids from interstate. How were the Dockers going to do the deal anyway?
McCarthy will be just fine once he begins pre-season training with the Dockers, GWS state he could not cope with the rigours of professional football. My bet is he will train the house down in Perth and be ready for round one 2017. Happy as a pig in shit!

Unless he isnt traded or delisted. It could happen.

He will end up at Fremantle. Both clubs will make it happen. Fremantle to offer a first and second round pick (not necessarily in the same year) is my bet. He won't be a Delisted Free Agent.
90% he will be at fremantle for the 2017 season. But as he is signed till the end of 2017 its possible he wont.

He can't be a delisted free agent, I don't think? He doesn't have enough years built up, would have to go via the draft, I thought...

Reckon a first and second would get it done? Allegedly 2 firsts turned down already...

If it's like this year again, Freo finish 3rd, pick 16 plus their second, say pick 34, is that even close? I wouldn't have thought so, though it is similar to what Port gave for Ryder.

Parties are currently investigating if his contract can be torn up and he be delisted. Doubt it will/should happen. And I would think pick 16 and 34 for a player taken two years ago with pick 13 (?) and who is obviously battling some issues would be more than enough.

It's just more confirmation that to call the AFL a professional league is giving it way too much credit. Especially to the players.

I think that is a bit unfair to have broad sweeping statements. There will always be players that are unable to cope with the rigours of being a professional athlete.

This kind of thing happens in all sports though.

Young kids go play soccer in Europe, don't get paid sometimes, don't get game time, injury management or coaching they were unwisely promised, come back to Australia with their tales between their legs.

Young guys go off to college in the US, have all sorts of issues. Others do well, turn pro then waste their talents.

Our once treasured swimmers were having stillnox parties on a training camp.

I might be drinking the cool aid but I can genuinely see why McCarthy would sign a contract extension in 2014 even with honest advice by a decent manager who was only looking after his interests. No idea if that was the case but it could well be. I can also believe a player can go from happy enough in late 2014/early 2015 to increasingly homesick as the demands of professional football sink in. Remember, in 2014 he was cruising in the NEAFL with all the young players, so whilst from the outside he was dominating 2015 I can see how it changes. I can see how even with honest dealings by both GWS and Freo that trade week could've been super stressful and a failed outcome even worse.

I've been very critical of everyone involved in this but the more I step back and look at it the more I start to believe that there isn't some conspiracy here from GWS, McCarthy, his manager or Freo. It's just a bad set of circumstances and the AFL system not really designed to cover all bases.

All this should do is serve as a warning to players signing contracts so early in their careers. GWS haven't done anything wrong. Maybe with the benefit of hindsight, probably would have waited a bit longer before locking him down, just to see how we was going. But I think some interstate player will wait a bit before signing contracts just because their management told them to.

If the anxiety stuff is legit then I really do feel for him. I've always had anxiety, and its been most manifest in adult life through work stress. Having said that, I still don't think he's entitled to walk into the work place of his choice at the disadvantage of his current employer. If he wants to quit, then he can go ahead. Should have saved enough cash for the next two years, and can work in a real industry in the meantime if he hasn't, and can enter the 2017 draft.

You say this thing goes on all the time then provide examples of people who go half way round the world to realise their dreams. None of whom tend to cry they just want to go home.

I don't think there is a conspiracy, I just think the system we have exposes out footballer as a bunch of sooky mummys boys because we allow them to run roughshod over the clubs with their blackmailing demands.

Oh they can cope, just when they get to do it at the club of their choosing. That's when their coping mechanisms kick in.

Tadhg Kennelly has spoken a lot of how homesick he was. Does that make him a sooky mummy's boy? He was able to be a very good player despite of it but for others emotional issues impact much more severely. Derogatory comments like sooky mummy's boy encourage attempts to suppress emotional expression which paradoxically makes emotional regulation more difficult (which means more emotion, not less).

Had you watch Neesham on open mike? Neesham said had he saw him play for 10 minutes he would of kept him. Now days you pick them up after they play in the state leagues. Still... McCarthy for 2 1st round picks seems like a fair trade. You can make him rot for 3 more years for all I care

That post made no sense.

Well good on GWS for keeping him. Dont expect 2 1st round picks from either WA club for Van Berlo.

As I said... Keep him. once 2017 rolls around, you have little leverage.
I honestly dont care anymore. Its just funny watching you lot pretend you actually care about him and not that you want a fwd on the cheap. Bet if the shoe was on the other foot you would scream from the hilltops. Funny ****ers out west.

If the club really want to be dicks we can hold him till the trade period at the end of 2017 or he goes psd.

They won't, but just saying.

Yeah like that other spoilt turd that played for your club I think he went by the alias figjam, couldn't wait to get out of Brisbane.
The difference is though, is that he agreed to a one year contract and forfilled it. Also Collingwood gave Brisbane plenty in return for him.
McCarthy however hasn't seen out his contract and what exactly did Freo offer GWS for him? The same thing that is between your ears, Sweet F*#k All.
So really they are not even close to each other but nice try.:D
