I though McV was quite good today, and has been improving over the past 2-3 games esp. I know there seems to be alot of anti McV vibe on this forum, which I dont really get. He could have kicked straighter today, and sure hes not Cousins, but hes playing his role, winning the ball and adding something to the team. This time next year we'll be glad Roosy has persisted in developing him. Player development can take a good 2-3 years, and i think this is only his 2nd or 3rd year up, so patience McV slaggers, there is a good player in the making here - mark my words :thumbsu:

McVeigh had a very good game today. Especially in the first half as he always seemed to be in the action.

It does concern me what we expect from a guy who has been in the system quite a while now. I have said when Sydney are playing better, he is made to look better by the players around him (ie, they BRING him into the game).

I thought he got a little bit more of the ball today, but was not very damaging and had little impact.

Schmidt looks far more dangerous when around the contest, and when he has the ball.

and isnt that the whole idea of being a 'team'... bringing each other into the game... I would have thought so anyhow, and I wouldnt expect too many of the other players to be complaining about that... so give the dude a break for godsake...

Agreed he played better today and agree that when the team plays better it makes him look better too. Also Schmidt looks more potent for sure.
If theres one thing that has anoyed me most about him, is the fact that he doesnt get in there enough. Meaning hes too soft. Ive watched him in the past choose not to go for the ball, instead of puting his body on the line for the team, wheather or not hes instructed not to, i dont know. But, there were 2 examples of that today, 1 was just before schniders goal, the ball went to ground near the goal square, he was first there, saw an opponent crashing in, and decided to pull out. Even though a goal resulted with a bit of luck, he would have been caught high/PITB, result point blank shot on goal. 2nd was similar though up the ground.
Anyway good on him for getting involved more, ultimitely id like to see him attack the footy more..

The one near the square was a blatant squib. He has to be much better than that to continue at the top. You are right, he doesn't like it too hard that is why he is not a very good run with player, even though he has done a couple of good tagging jobs over the journey.

My point was that when the team are playing reasonable they MAKE him look good. He got a bit more of the ball today because the team around him was playing better. I don't rate him as much of a player individually myself.

Even today he would not go into hard contests (and saw him pull out more than once). His disposals by hand and foot is still very sloppy. However, he was good at being front and square (but that is where Sydney won it today, something tells me it was something they focused on during the past week).

this is what i dont quite get: Bevan (who Roos brought in to the team because of his hardness) is slagged off for being a meathead with apparently no football brain. McVeigh, who obviously does have a football brain, is slagged off because he is apparently too soft. If you want 18 captain kirks in the team, youre gonna be waiting a long time, and it wouldnt work anyhow. Teams are made up of players who can compliment each other, not of players who are super human. Not only that, ALL players have weak areas that can always be improved. Less slagging dudes, its getting boring

Do you understand the fundamentals of football???

Bevan - Courageous or stupid?
Bevan will throw himself into a pack, at the ball with no respect for his body. This is SOMETIMES at detriment to the team. He will throw himself into a contest, when he could have kept his feet and done something constructive... BUT he also lacks FOOTBALL SKILLS. Does not have a football brain, he decision making is questionable (at best) and his skills by hand and foot are simply not up to AFL standard.

Jarred McVeigh
Soft. Will stay out of a contest even if it is in the best interests of the team for him to contest it. His skills by both hand and foot are mixed, sometimes alright, sometimes absolutely awful. He is not a particuarly strong mark, and really is not physical enough for AFL footy. He lacks defensive and strength to go with his opponent. In essence he is a RECEIVER pure and simple. No point him receiving if a) he is not in the right position (which he was TODAY, but often is not) b) if he is going to turn the ball over to the opposition.

I am not about the individual. I am about what is best for the team. Schmidt has shown that we have talent in our reserve grade competition, yet he is moved out of the team before the guys above.

Tim Schmidt
Excellent hands in close. Has the football smarts to NEARLY always be in the right position. Great disposal by hand and foot. Is not overly fast but can make space out nothing. Can be an in and under player, or a receiver to set up play.

You say you will have mixed players, of course you will. But you should expect at the least the fundamentals of being a footballer will be in place. Malceski is very suspect defensively, but his skills and run, his ability to make time and space ensure that he is a vital aspect of our lineup.

Players like McVeigh and Bevan CAN be replaced with players that have equal or better abilities. Unfortunately we don't know this because rather than test these players out on the AFL stage, we stay with what we know.

And THAT is how you become a Richmond, Carlton and various teams languishing at the bottom of the ladder.

I'm sick of mcveigh, i can't stand his brother but at least he has a crack....until this year i defended mcveigh when anyone criticised him but i've been burnt, i cannot work out how the likes of schneider and buchanan have done time in the twos and mcveigh is allowed to continue his reign of mediocrity....he can't kick (not alone there, i know) and he lacks the class of a malceski or the guts of a jude bolton (who also seems to have lost his kicking boots)...
mcveigh's time is fast running out

so essentially what your saying is that Paul Roos and the coaching staff are stuck in their ways, and have, like me, little understanding of football fundamentals. Interesting...

can anyone on this forum, maybe LIZ, actually provide some intelligent insight as to why then, these players of apparent mediocrity can be allowed to run out on the field each week, because just slagging them off for being too weak, too soft, too dumb, too slow, or whatever, is obviously being missed by the coaching staff who study their players week in week out to put the best 22 on the park.

Mase, your posts of the past couple of weeks have been a pleasure to read. You have made your points about our deficiencies very clearly.

My take on the above argument is we won the flag on the back of 22 players having a red hot go and without genuine receivers.

All sides have their leaders and generals on the ground, but the very best sides have players who can rise to the occasion regardless of those around them giving them a lift up. Last GF for us it was Richards and Davis who almost got us over the line because they stood up when it mattered.

McVeigh unfortunately lacks grunt and that ability to pull something from nowhere when it matters. Had he finished off well today he could very well have been close to BOG. Early in the game he hit the post from point blank range, then scrubbed a couple of kicks that he clearly pulled because he didn't have the confidence to have a go at the sticks, and then running in to goal he tried to centre it up to a nothing situation from 30 metres when he clearly should have had a shot on a 45% angle.

It looked like he was in a different role today where he was given freedom, certainly played better but boy he duffed a golden opportunity to impress big time.

On WCE, they looked like a ship without a rudder and some of there followers (not rucks) failed to rise to the occasion without Judd at his best. Party host Hunter looked really out of it and Kerr struggled as the first string on baller.

my comment on 'intelligent insight' was not directed at anyone particular, including Mase, who has at least provided more than just cheap shots, and I too enjoy reading your posts. My real question is : if all the McV knockers are correct, then why would he still be playing, Roos obviously sees things differently, and dont come back with, oh he's a golden boy, give me some real answers.

roos and the coaching staff are wrong on mcveigh, that's what i'm saying....i can't explain why, but everyone makes mistakes, maybe roos has faith and is allowing that faith to be sorely tested week in, week out....but as for providing "intelligent insight", oooh, please liz please,, pss off with your sarcastic crud....you're a mcveigh fan, i'm not, and we're debating it, that's what this is for....otherwise, just keep posting comments agreeing with yourself, geez
whether you like it or not, chumly, statistically mcveigh has not had a good year, although he's far from alone

there's a lot of footy fans, including esseondon fans, asking why mark bolton is still playing footy, every club has such players, and every fan probly has their own reasons why such-and-such a player shouldn't be playing ... i do not consider anything i've said about mcveigh a cheap shot, i'm saying straight up front i don't rate him in out best 22....or even our best 25 ... and i assure you i have been in his corner right up until this season

"chumly" - now thats a good one. Youre entitled to your opinion, and I am totally cool with that. But dont come back to me when Mcveigh turns up in your dreams 10 feet tall in a big black cape and wields a goal post at you , statistically speaking.

Well said!!:thumbsu::)

Isn't Bevo really holding up Crouch's spot!

As for McVeigh - I haven't seen enough of anyone below but Schmidt has been the standout in the ressies for 2 years so it's unlikely there is someone who will come in straight away other than Moore (who has footy smarts but hasn't had time to settle at the top level). As Schmidt, Moore and even McVeigh have shown, it takes a while to come up to the speed as ACTAFL is hardly AFL or VFL standard. Given our lack of injuries, its not surprising we haven't had an opportunity to blood onballerslet alone key position players like Vogels and Grundy.

By the way, I notice the Ben Mathews slaggers have died down. Did yet another A grade job on a quality player - and Parko agrees with me!
