Isn't this just re-reporting on a story from the beginning of the season? I could have sworn I saw something more or less identical in the Fairfax press.

Yeah there was a bit of noise before the season started about what the AFL thought of our situation. For some reason lioninthesand tries to take info from the media and say he was thinking the same thing a day or so later.

The list of top 20 draftees confirmes that we are playing in the wrong division.

Either we get top talent, which means that we need a pp in the top 10, plus top academy selections or we continue as is a feeder team making up the numbers for telecast feeds that no one watches.

The other clubs are looking at us in horror thinking they could be us one day, so starting to support helping us .... just in case.

What we need is the broadcasters to lob the poor ratings/advertising revenue into the afl's court from the other side. Hell, that could even be the reason there are articles surfacing that are empathetic.

Players drafted by the Lions in the top 20

Daniel Rich

Sam Mayes

Josh Schache

Eric Hipwood

Sam Docherty GONE

James Aish GONE

Mitch Clark GONE

Lachie Henderson GONE

Matthew Leuenberger GONE

Billy Longer GONE

Jared Polec GONE

The list of GONE people makes me sad - not because they are gone but because we drafted some of them in the first place...

I would trade in pick#2 (assumption) and PP (assumption) in return for a decent coaching panel (with the best development coach available as a part of that panel).

Young players are untried. Coaches should have runs on the board. Why not get the bloke Kevin Sheehan as a paid consultant to advise us (may not be possible...not in terms of players but developers of players).

I know what you mean. It's an absolute dud fest when you look at the names of "gone" players, apart from Docherty. Henderson has had an OK career and Polec has flashes, but not what you'd want in return for all those top 10 picks. Still kills me that we've used 3 first round picks on ruckmen :(

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-08-09/afl-to-explore-alternatives-to-priority-pick-system

...."I think we would like to consider how you could get clubs to rejuvenate quicker than the current system, but there are dangers with the priority pick system we had – that's why we took it out," Evans told 3AW radio on Tuesday night.

"Now it is [awarded through] an application to the Commission, and I think it'll be very rarely implemented.

"So there is a possibility of looking at different drafting models."

Before 2012, teams received a priority pick if they had five wins or fewer during the season.

Melbourne, the Lions and Carlton have all applied for assistance in recent seasons, but the AFL's general counsel, Andrew Dillon, and Evans have recommended to the Commission that their bids be denied.
...
Evans said he remained committed in principle to the first round of the NAB AFL Draft having all clubs represented in reverse ladder order, but there could be room for assistance to clubs in later rounds.

Melbourne didn't receive a priority pick... the AFL was able to dodge that bullet and give the pick 3 free agent "compensation" for James Frawley. He wasn't worth pick 3.

If Evans is shooting for the first round having all clubs represented then as well as formally removing the priority pick, they need to formally remove any chance of free agency compensation in the first round, and also remove the ability to trade first round picks in the current or next year's draft. Taking out one component won't deliver his utopia... and it won't happen until GWS's list finally reaches an age where clubs are will to trade a first round pick for one of the many young round-1 picks who want out of GWS.

I heard he partook a little too much in the loaves and fishes, Josh Green style.
He was great in the wet - almost seemed like he glided across the surface... those 3 days he spent milking a free kick was a bit much I reckon though

I think it was getting tiresome that Jesus kept saying he was the son of God though. Like sure bring all your talents and tricks but we don't need to hear "I'm the son of Gary O'Donell" in every interview and media appearance.

I thought it was more the confrontation between him and Gary Ablett Jnr that made him tone it down?

Kevin Bartlett making a fool of himself on SEN this morning. Has no idea of the Lions predicament. All he can say is Western Bulldogs St Kilda and Richmond haven't won premierships for ages they don't get any compo. Embarrassing himself.
Got a few million people in agreeance with him unfortunately.

Don't think KB believes half that shit that comes out of his own mouth, just likes to create a discussion for the show.
