Looks like there is a Nth Korea style propaganda campaign going on at the moment at the Lions. It is clever stuff, when you think about it. First the Robinson/Rocky "stoush", now the Bundy/Beams talk. It's great, creates competitiveness and bonding within the team, and makes the news... repeatedly. Good PR stuff, I reckon.

Daniel McStay says he can succeed filling a big hole in Brisbane Lions forward line

IF THE success of the Brisbane Lions in 2015 can be tied to the growth of one young player, then Daniel McStay is as good a choice as any.

If McStay, just nine games into his AFL career, can string together a year of steady improvement, it is one more reason why the Lions will escape the bottom four.

If he doesn’t – and any 194cm 19-year-old footballer deserves all the understanding that comes their way – then it is another step towards the Lions having to stuff 2105 into their thickening file labelled “development seasons’’.

If forwards like McStay and centre half-forward Michael Close could make an impact in a few games in 2015, the responsibility to kick a winning score each week takes pressure off the Brisbane midfield and their “mosquito fleet’’.

That’s four “ifs’’ to begin the first four paragraphs and that’s enough.

But that’s the sort of start line the Lions are standing on ahead of their Gabba clash with Collingwood on Saturday night.

McStay, who played almost entirely as a central defender in his two years before being drafted, lodged himself in the memory banks of many AFL watchers with a leaping mark and goal in his breakthrough three-goal game against Melbourne last August.

Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch, approaching his first full season without Jonathan Brown, told McStay a week before the NAB Challenge that he would be considered a forward.

Small forward Josh Green (33 goals) and Dayne Zorko (18) are the only active Lions players to have kicked more than 12 goals last year.

“I’d trained all summer as a defender. It was a little change, but I think I have what it takes to play as a forward,’’ McStay said.

“One of the reasons I have transitioned to be a forward is Leppa likes my ability to jump at the footy. If I can’t mark it, I need to bring it to ground. That’s one of the things I want to make a big part of my game.’’

Leppitsch has Brown working with the Brisbane “talls’’ when his blossoming media career permits and predictably has not zeroed in on their handballs.

“He’s stressed aggression, which was a strength of his game, the way he was able to get his opponents off him, and having eyes on the footy all the way into your hands, they are the biggest tips he’s given,’’ McStay said.

The Melburnian counts the Western Bulldogs’ intended franchise player Tom Boyd, a former Eastern Ranges teammate in Victoria’s TAC Cup, as one of his best mates.

“We went to the same school and Mum would feed us both and drive us to training,’’ McStay said.

“He’s got himself a good contract there. We keep in touch and we managed to catch up in the off-season. He came over for a family birthday.’’

Like Boyd, the one-time specialist defender is, on displayed AFL form, an accurate kick for goal.

McStay is well aware he kicked seven goals and no behinds for the Lions. “I think about four were from the goal square,’’ he said with a grin.

Watched 360, on the couch and open mike tonight - its been a long off season!

Thought Browny was really really good for his first episode. Maybe a bit to down the line on a few points but that's his style! I think a lot of people will really warm to his inclusion into foxfooty.

Open Mike was awesome. Wouldn't have been nearly as good if it were 30min. Some seriously funny moments.
