Melbourne Captain 2014

I've just quoted myself to elaborate on this.

I see a few of you guys are still keen to have Grimes as captain and I know that he is held in high esteem internally at your club and by your supporters.

The reality is though and I mean no disrespect by this, that you would be hard pressed to find many opposition players or supporters that respect him as a player let alone as a leader, Grimes/Trengrove leading your team out onto the G strikes fear in the heart of no man.

On the flipside, you would be hard pressed to find a single opposition player or supporter that doesn't rate Nathan Jones as both a very good player and leader, I empathise when I watch him play as he literally looks like one of only half a dozen players which are generally trying and he definitely looks like his effort puts everyone else to shame.

The leadership experiment of Grimes and Trenners has not only failed from a leadership perspective but also from a development perspective and it needs to be rectified in my opinion.

I mean no disrespect, but I'm going to disrespect your current skippers. That's how I read this. How does get ****ed sound!

Opposition supporters don't respect Jack Grimes as a footballer??? He may not be an A-grader but I'm glad he plays for us.

Yeah I'm sure people paying attention don't respect Grimes as a player. "That very good young half back busting his ass trying to lead that rubbish team in the midfield with very little help that never drops his head or backs off regardless, yeah I don't respect him at all and I'm definitely not a giant ****ing dildo"

I think Grimes is respected for what he is (a solid and courageous half back, who has had one very good season - and several affected by injury).

Would he captain any other club at the moment? In terms of playing ability, I'd certainly put him ahead of Nick Maxwell and Jed Adcock, but I just don't see him being thrust into, or trusted, with that role at any other club. That being said, another year or two at his 2012 level and this answer possibly changes.

I think the issue for outsiders is Melbourne clearly has an on-field and spiritual leader who should be captain (and by comparison to whom Grimes and Trengove suffer) - Nathan Jones. Every time I watched the Dees play this season Nathan Jones reminded me of King Leonidas - fighting the impossible fight. Any club would be lucky to have him.

lots of fellow supporters and the media seem to be on the nathan jones band wagon. but i think grimes is very suited to the role. i can remember our games this year against Adelaide and while he got caught holding the ball about 3 times you could tell he was putting in a monster of an effort because he could see the game slipping and was trying to inject some momentum, (unfortunately didn't work out on the day). but i think somebody whom demonstrates that amount of effort should be captain.

as for jones i think he should remain content where he is. to me i think jones would act differently if he was captain. i don't know why or have any evidence to support it but i just think him being captain would impact on his form, and i want him to continue as a great player in a smaller role.

Trengrove, well i personally don't think he should be co-captain. to me he doesn't seem like a natural leader, sure he may be hard woking as Neeld said when he appointed him but we need people who can lead. and it seems very clear that it has impacted on his form. i think he needs to willfully pull out of the role similar to judd or Crawford and devote all mental power to his own development and form without the worry of responsibility for the other 22 players.

Captain: Grimes
Vice Captain: Jones

Who gives a **** what ignorant ****s think of Grimes? He doesn't and we don't. He's respected by everyone that knows football so yeah eat a fat one.

By ignorant campaigners, you mean almost everyone who follows footy?

By ignorant sillys, you mean almost everyone who follows footy?

I guess most people never watch Melbourne play. You reckon he's not respected as a player by those actually watching?

I don't think grimes and trengove are natural leaders either , grimes comes across as intelligent but I don't think he commands respect , Nathan jones and Colin garland do

Trengove shouldn't even be a leader , the kid can't get a kick

Neither of them have a presence on the field

Grimes plays his heart out but he doesn't have a presence in the midfield

I don't see that as relevant.

Lets look at the facts here: Grimes has seen just 6 wins in his two years as captain - three of them against GWS. Has he played any outstanding games in that time? Has he carried the team even once? On performance, Grimes is a solid C+ right now.

Nobody watches us play - because we're shithouse and there is no reason to.

I agree, he's a great guy and probably a good leader, but why can't people see that appointing someone who is AFL respected will help us be recognised.

Jones has to be skipper.

The beauty of Jones is that he is in the guts, plays his heart out, commands respect and isn't going anywhere. Sure we'll recruit a mid or two who will pass him but your captain isn't always the best mid (see Adelaide) they just have to be a solid mid and pick up the team when it is down and be the sort of player that other players will listen too. Jones is consistent, if he needs to give another player a spray or pep-up he can without being compromised.

Garland vice. Dawes or Clark deputy vice.

Trenners and Grimes definitely leadership group though.

This. Some of you guys need to get real. I think Pack Specialist chose the wrong word for a start... I'm sure opposition players 'respect' Grimes as a player because no one can (or does) deny that he puts in 100% and is a solid performer, but there is a wide difference between 'respecting' a player and 'rating' that player.

As Show Some Fight says, how much has Grimes really done in his 2 years as captain? Anyone who thinks he has been any more than a solid player for us during that time is kidding themselves - and I'm as big a fan of Grimes as anyone. Sure he has been injured a bit, and yeah the team around him is rubbish, but at the end of the day he hasn't done much to write home about. A couple of very good games, but solid overall.

Should he remain captain? I think so, Grimes and Jones as co-captains. He seems like a great leader, as opposed to Trengove who hasn't filled me with confidence and, as we have all said, needs to concentrate on getting fit, getting over the OP or whatever has been plaguing him, and then on improving as a player.

I agree Captain Jack that rates would have been a more appropriate word.

You are very much entitled to your opinion and it's ok for you to believe that I am ignorant to the Demons but I follow them very closely and have great respect for them.

As mentioned in response to Captain Jack I do believe that rates would have been a more appropriate word.

Saying he is respected by everyone that knows football is wrong though in my opinion.

A lot of people that follow football pretty closely would not even know who he is and that is no disrespect to him.

Jacks, the Tribe has spoken.

If we (us and the club) are serious about changing the landscape and future of the club, Jones should be made captain. Stop worrying about rustling the jimmies of a select few and get shit done. Grimesy and Trenners are big boys and will be fine. Hard calls need to be made if we want to improve. If it's too hard, leave it as is then and we can collect a few more spoons before we relocate. Real talk.

This post is wrong on so many levels. But the highlighted part is the most idiotic statement for mine. Just a ridiculous thing to say.
