Melbourne currently have a long term injured player in Russell Robertson. He's not expected back anytime soon due to a horrific archillies injury he copped in round 10 last year. He's training work load is as minimal as Graham Polak's. Like Polak, nobody knows if and when Robbo will play again, source - MFC

Now seeing that Richmond are applying to put Polak on the long term injury list, and thereby selecting Cousins and another player in the Pre Season draft, wouldn't it be consistent to allow Melbourne that extra draft pick so Robbo can go on the long term injury list?

Yeah, nah! Totally different situation. Polak's long term injury was not footy related and pretty freakish.

pretty freakish?

As far as I know trams travel along purpose built tram tracks. Unless the tram jumped of the tracks and went up on the footpath then I wouldn't consider it freakish.

Is Robertson's injury brain or mental related, which ultimatley effects his peripheral vision and can denigrate over a few weeks?

Didnt think so. :thumbsu:

I think Richmond are trying to use the same exceptional circumstances rule that Essendon used to put Rama on the Rookie list. West Coast also tried to use the rule for Wilson when he did his knee for the 3rd time in 3 years but the AFL knocked them back.

I think Richmond have a case but they should have put it forward a little earlier because it looks like they are trying to pull a swifty. I think it could go either way. The other clubs may block it from happening.

As for your Robbo arguement, No, it's a different circumstance.

Minor corrections ;)

And surely the onus was on Polak to use the pedestrian traffic lights that night, rather than jade walk accross the tram tracks.

Maybe the AFL will consider that in their decision.

Rama had cancer, Polak has brain damage, both had nothing to to with football realted injuries. Robo injured himself on the football field just like any other normal injury.

If he is gonna be out for so long Melbourne should place him on the long term injury list and promote a rookie.

This thread seriously made me Rofl. I thank you for that. :thumbsu:

Yeah, ok, how about we put Robbo in an induced coma for a few days, then you can have that pick.

Maybe there should be a capacity of the long term injury list that allows players to be put on for a 1 year minimum if it is lodged when the other list lodgements are due. That would mean clubs are more likely to take a punt on an injured player and give them time to recover therefore potentially more players getting opportunities.

The risk is that the player recovers earlier then expected but this is also the safe guard. Say in this Robertson case if he does recover they cannot play him in the seniors till the year after.

This "Extra-Long term injury list" would mean that there would need to be no more debate RE making exceptions for this reason or that as it would be sufficent enough for all players will long term ailments both football and non-football related (I'm sure Essendon would have been happy using this kind of system in Rama's case).

Thoughts? Changes? Flames?

Who cares if it was or wasn't on a football feild? It is very much Polak's fault for being hit by the tram, whilst Robertson couldn't do anything about tearing his achilles. Whilst i don't agree with the thread, Polak should be put exactly where you told Robbo to be put - the long term injury list.

While I feel sorry for what Polak went through, if he was actually drunk when he got hit by the tram or if ran across the road instead of using a crossing then it's his fault.

Rama with cancer is a different story, Lonergan's kidney injury is a different story. Where the player suffers an injury or illness through no fault of their own then I'm all for a rookie exemption. As someone else said Brad Smith didnt get permission and he did a knee twice - no fault of his own.

But when the players carelessness contributes to it, well I think thats stretching the rules just a bit too far.

I take it you are not being seruious when you say this?

You really want to open up Pandoras box don't you. How many times is it a players own fault when he gets injured whilst playing?

I'm being serious. Rama's case is completely different, he had cancer, he wasn't and idiot that walked in front of a fricken tram! A tram that goes on tracks in the middle of the road!

Allen Jakovich did his back getting out of his car, maybe we should have applied to the AFL to get another PSD pick back then.

Polak is injured because of his own fault. He should be put on the long term injury list. It will be interesting to see how the AFL judge this.
