In one year turned wooden spooners Wobbles into Gf'ist if it wasn't for a head butt ....they would have been premiers

Carmans headbutt on the umpire was playing for Essendon under Sheedy.

It was Carmans hit on Tuck that lost them the GF and has Hafey never forgiving Carman.

The old timers are out of touch. Rex has sounded out of touch for years.

malthouse is great at getting the best out of an average list

so do we want mick to come in and get the best out of our list

or

get a coach who can build a team to win a premiership

i say the latter

'95 you mean

It was a promising team of guys most of whom turned out to be duds (bourke, bower, bulluss, charles, daffy, dundas, edwards, elliot, howat, jurica, neeld, slater, sullivan, wigney), some of whom were ok or better (richo, brodders, campbell, benny & michael gale, duncan kellaway, knights, naish, rogers, turner) and some of whom we traded (bond, maxfield, murphy, merenda, prescott, tape, torney).

Sorry mate I did mean '95! As for your breakdown of duds, stayers and trades, after a promising finals campaign with Northey at the helm, it was Walls' influence that probably slaughtered the careers of several players followed by trading key players like Maxfield and Torney to rival clubs where their careers continued to flourish for several years!

Good recruitment goes a long way.

Malthouses performance is all the better for that fact that he managed to get a list that most rated middle of the table at best into 2 grand finals and the list he has now is no better and they still keep performing above the general footy publics expectations.
Their list has few true champions of the game but follow a plan and they play accountable football.
Something we stopped doing in 1982 bar seasons94-95 under Northey.
There has never been a Malthouse coached team that did not play hard aggressive accountable football.

If by "best out of an average list" you mean dual premierships, then I will gladly take the former.

Right. All I was getting at though is Collingwoods list is much, much better than ours and always has been. If MM was coaching us from round 1 this year we would still be near the bottom at the moment.

I love that Mal Brown said that we needed a coach who had played in a premiership and had coached a premiership despite his son playing in a premiership last year coached by someone who had done neither to that point.

hafey and brown know what they are talking about. malthouse dont need a team of champions and 15 top 10 draft picks to get a side into the finals, if anyone can do it malthouse can.

its far better than bottoming out every 2 years

I'm not so sure about that Barnzy.
If you line up our lists player for player with Collingwood we have them covered in most areas of the ground.
I'm not saying that we will improve massively overnight but I think we have been very ordinarily coached for the past 6 months and that TW was more concerned about TW rather than the RFC in his tenure over the last 12 months.
Wiht a coach like MM in charge I truly believe that we have massive improvement in us and it could and should happen in a very short period of time.
Our performances have been doom and gloom but our potential is not.
