who are we strongly in for with our first round pick?? are we happy to pick up a few players or are we strongly going after one player???

I think there are plenty of good quality talls throughout this draft, but after say the first half a dozen midfielders the quality starts to drop off. So I'm in favour of going a midfielder early (Ziebell/Hartlett), a KP player with our second round pick (Lisle/Cahill) & a ruckman with our third round pick. (McCulloch/Redden)

We do have some good kids coming through in the Midfield.

Don't we need a KPP Back?

Dustin Fletcher - Almost finished

Who do we go for in the later rounds, if Hurley is gone, (TO Port), Riley Milne seems to be a real go getter, seems to be solid FB, any other KP defenders people like the looks of.

Also, is it looking more and more likely that we are going to go tall this year, with the departure of Michael, and Fletchers end coming soon, and the undeveloped Gumbleton and Neagle in the F50, it just seems that their is alot of Tall Depth in this draft, much to my surprise, but the Midfield quality seems to be lacking after the first 5 - 10 players, although, I am not sure who I would like to see, gut tells me Hurley, but KPB are more often than not found in the later rounds, IMO, and the departure of Lovett on the cards, we have to think about what each player brongs to the table for our team, in terms what they can offer us next year,

Yep, positive reinforcement! I like it:)

Probably best that the great man stays away. With him and Sheedy gone it is all about the future now.

*sigh* But boy would I love him to make a comeback for a couple of years....

should have stayed and played off the bench in a leadership role!

My thoughts are in bold.

Cheers.:thumbsu:

No we don't.

Do you honestly think we are a genuine chance at a premiership, not just finals, next year? If the answer's no (which it is) then we don't care about what they'll bring next year. What is relevant is what they'll bring when we are challenging.

I really think we should use either a 3rd round pick or one we get through trade (possibly Lovett) for a KP forward.

As far as ruckman go we have three and a half on our list Ryder being the half. The club has commited to Laycock and showed faith weather supporters like it or not. So i don't see us or see why we should pick up a ruckman in the ND, rookie yes.

Gumbleton, Neagle and Daniher are our future fwds. Gumbleton and Neagle might be cut down by injuries and Daniher seems to be a good 3rd tall option but i have doubt about him being a out and out FF or CHF.

Just putting it out there to see if anyone else agrees. Also I don't rate Hooker and think he won't be on the list in 2010. I would love to see us go for a roughy fwd like Brown or that Sbascio excuse spelling.

Probably a later pick.

Picks 1 and 2: Key back, midfielder (Hurley + Swift etc. or Hartlett/Ziebell + Trengrove/Lisle)
Picks 3, 4, 5: Ruckman, key forward, midfielder (not necessarily in that order)

Ryder is not a ruckman. We have three ruckmen, and three pinch hitters at best (Ryder, obviously, and Fletch and Gumbleton have the height - obviously the last two would be if Hille and Laycock both went down in the first quarter). We should be looking at recruiting a mature age ruckman (White? or Griffen) and a young ruckman (Redden, Browne etc.)

Agreed, but Lloyd has at least 2-3 years left in him, and there are plenty of drafts should one of those guys not come up.

Hooker showed a fair bit in his AFL games, and from all reports had a good season in the 2s.

Someone like Gaertner as a rookie? or a late ND pick might be the go.

They're looking good prospects, but you need plenty of midfield depth to reach success like Geelong have shown. Their midfield gives their forwards every opportunity. I put some KP players in with our second round, Lisle or Cahill. Lisle's prodominently a tall defender and Cahill has been brought up as a forward, though with his athleticism and his average kicking, I think he'd be better used in the backline.

..in terms what they can offer us next year,

I think recruiters look for potential, not really taking into account how their recruit will perform in their first year. Maybe Geelong & Hawthorn would but besides them, it's all long term for the rest of us.

Recruiters also pick the best players in the draft that remain, The position they're after doesn't really come into it so much.

Beleive me, I heard that myself from a recruiter.

Pick 5: Steele Sidebottom
Pick 23: Jordan Lisle
Pick 20-35: Michael Still
Pick 39: Ash Smith
Pick 55: Jarred Reddan

An interesting collection.

I'm a big fan of Sidebottom, and how big a fan I am will be known by the end of the week, but I can't stop thinking Hurley's our man. There's so little that separate the top few guys though, and you'd be mad to be disappointed with either.

I think there's a bit of momentum behind Jordan Lisle at the moment, I don't think he's going to slip out of the top 20. Mind you, Tayte Pears got to us last year.

Michael Still's an interesting one. He finished the season with a bang, I think he ended up leading the Knights' goalkicking. However, I'm not completely sold on his size, and I think another tall forward is just about the last thing we need.

Ash Smith would be a very good get at 39. Tackles well, is a good athlete and has some pretty clean skills. Was injured leading up to the Champs and didn't perform as expected, and such there's very little hype about him here, but I think he's a really good small defensive prospect who can play through the midfield.

Having only seen Redden on TV, it's hard to make a good judgement, but I don't mind him. Personally, I'd rather we take the gamble on an athlete though and I think Zach Clarke could be the one. 203cms tall, runs like the wind and runs all day. He's skinny as all hell but, given the amount of average ruckmen that have emerged in recent years, I'd like to take the chance on a guy that could be great, rather than a guy that should be average. Given our interest in Dean Putt last year around this time in the draft, I'd say the club feels similarly.

My picks

pick5- Michael Hurley
pick23- Tom Swift (note I do feel we will trade Lovett to get a upgraded pick here)
pick 20-35- David Zacaritus (spelling)
3rd round- Jordan Roughead

I'll do my other one's a bit later

This would be a dream come true. P.S. Its Zaharakis

Pick 5: Michael Hurley / Jackson Trengove

With the great quality of our young midfielders a KPB would be a lot more valuable, if Hurley is taken pick 4 then Trengove is our man unless Rich or Naitanui haven't been drafted, which is very unlikely.

Pick 23: Tom Swift / Nick Suban / Clancee Pearce

Swift has been talked about as a player like Joel Selwood, a proven gun, struck down by injury. Highly unlikely he'll last till pick 23 but we can only hope. There won't be many gun midfielders around at this pick so a Small Defender, preferably Nick Suban would be a good asset IMO.

Pick 20-35: Jordan Roughead / Luke Shuey
Pick 39: Jarred Reddan / Ash Smith
Pick 55: Tom Allwright / Riley Milne

I've put the players for each pick in order of preference.
Thoughts?

Well spelling has never been my greatest asset. But that is the bloke. Good set of hands, uses the ball well. Not sure he'll be there in our 3rd rounder but things happen in the draft

No way he will be available at that pick. No chance at all. Will go between picks 15-25.

As long as he doesnt go at 23. No left side which leads him to turning into trouble under pressure or trying to get away a shonkly left foot kick.

Ant is right which is why I recon he is a chance to slide till the 3rd rund. He does not have a left foot. But that said a few players in the AFL are one sided and that does not stop them. Don't want him with our 2nd rounders, but for a 3rd round I do think he would be best available

Ant, since you are hear, just wanted to ask this question:

Who do you see developing into a better player for us:

Sidebottom
Hurley
Hartlett
Ziebell

I like Sidebottom, but if we don't take Hurley, would this leave a whole in our team? Or could Pears fill in the spot?

Pick#5
Steele Sidebottom – 182cm, 79kg – Murray Bushrangers.
Midfielder/half forward/half back.
Natural smooth moving midfielder with excellent skills on both sides of the body. Very smart player who reads the play well and has a good understanding of the clearances. Runs to the right spots and provides good options. Uses the ball well by hand and by foot. The only real downside he has is he is only steady in the pace department. Has enough speed to get himself out of tight situations but is not going to burst out of a pack or through the middle of the ground. Has been used in a variety of roles including half back, half forward and midfield. Very composed under pressure and chooses the right options . Although he is not what you would call a genuine hard nut and likes to play more of a play maker role he has no fear in putting his head over the ball when he has to and does not shy away from aphysical contest.Played a great finals game against Rangers where his efforts in the second quarter put his side back on top. Backed that up the following week with a strong game against Oakleigh before putting on the Rusty show ( and what a show it was ) in the TAC Final.
Other options Hamish Hartlett or Jack Ziebell.

Pick#23
Jordan Lisle – 196cm, 87kg – Oakleigh Chargers/Carey Grammar
CHB/CHF
Tall KP player who gets used at both ends of the ground. Good strong mark who has good foot skills and kicks the ball a long way.For a big bloke he is reasonably good in traffic and has reasonably good pace . Has a bit of a question mark on his agility, his turning circle is not great. His goal kicking is pretty reliable. His defensive side is good and he reads the play well which enables him to get to contests in the back half. Already has a good frame and he holds his position in the contest well.
Other options If Lisle is gone then possibly Tom Lynch who is a 191cm utility who has done a good job as a tall defender in some games or Trengove if he was available.
Otherwise probably another mid here (Okeefe,Pearce,Speight) and an extra project tall later.

Andrew Lovett pick#second round
If we get a pick here.
Matthew Broadbent – 189cm, 81kg – Woodville-West Torrens.
Midfielder/half back
Has played mainly half back or run with roles but he looks like a kid who can play a natural midfield role as well. He has pretty good pace and has good hands in close. Uses the ball well by foot as well. Runs hard all day and when he plays at half back he is prepared to run and make an option or run and carry the ball. Gave SA good drive in most games. Despite his defensive roles he managed to find a bit of the as well. Stoppage work looked good in the games i saw him play.
Other options Rhys Okeefe,Clancee Pearce,Nick Suban,Tom Rockliff,Ash Smith,Shuey.

Pick#39
Tom Hill – 198cm, 79kg –Northern Knights.
FP forward/back back up ruck.
Bottom age tall who is still a bit on the skinny side. Had good under 16 form and has had a steady season this year without being outstanding. Has played mainly forward and ruck this year. His ruck skills are ok but I see him as more of a KP player at either end of the ground than a ruckman. His pace is ok for a tall and he is reasonably agile. His is a solid mark and reads the game well. His down side is his kicking which is not great all the time.Has had games where he has used the ball very well but has also had some ordinary days. Doesn’t mind making for few tackles.
Other options As far as defenders go maybe Jayden Post,Zack Sengstock. Other than that you may go ruck here with Redden or go midfield with any of Klemke,Allwright,Sheahan,Sloane,Banner,Strauss,Kilpin.

Pick#55
Zachary Clarke – 203cm, 84kg – Oakleigh Chargers
Ruckman
Vic Metro’s fourth string ruckman who has had a reasonable year for the Chargers so far. Has split his time with some ruck duties as well as playing at FF. He does not win as many taps as he should for a player of his height but he has done pretty well in the games I have seen him play. His has good skills by foot and by hand and is pretty mobile with good pace for a tall. Has shown he can take a good contested mark but it is also one area of his game that could improve a bit more. He gets to the rights spots but has spilled a couple grabs that he should have taken at various times during games. His goal kicking is pretty good and he has been in Oakleigh’s better players on a number of occasions this year.
Other options Steven Gaertner if you thought he might not make it to round 5 or the rookie draft.Otherwise go midfield or Riley Milne if he was there.

Pick#71
Steve Gaertner – 198cm, 88kg -Dandenong Stingrays
KPP or ruck
His lack of consistency, average foot skills and a slight lack of footy nous cost him at last years draft but it has been good to see that Steve has gone away and worked on a few areas that have seen his game improve a lot. He has spent more time at half back this year and he does look comfortable in that position. He likes to rebound and carry the ball through the middle and his game sense has really improved a lot this year.
His problem area is still his kicking. Although he is not a really bad kick he can be prone to just throwing the ball onto the boot and trying to unload which leads to mixed results although he is generally kicking it 50 meters when this happens. His defensive efforts at half back have been very good. For a big bloke his pace is pretty good and he can take a strong contested mark.
Had a good finals series for the Rays and was named best in two of their finals. He had a shakey start to the GF with a few early fumbles but played a very good second half.Has been handy when used in the ruck.
Other options Another mid here hard to say who may be around, maybe Gotch, Duryea or similar.

Rookie#1
Leigh Kitchen – 180cm, 73kg – Eastern Rangers.
Midfielder
Has bounced back pretty well after missing all of last season. Good midfielder or small forward who reads the hit outs well and has good crumbing skills up forward. His work rate is very good and he tackles well. Finds a heap of the ball and he handballs a lot but it is generally creative. The down side is his kicking. He is not always a great user of the ball by foot.Very strong at the contest and not afraid to get in and under.

Rookie#2
Levi Casboult -196cm, 95kg –Dandenong Stingrays.
KPP defence ?
Ruckman who is not overly tall but uses his leap well and wins a lot of hit outs. Gets around the ground ok but never gets really big numbers. Pace is ok and skills are pretty good for a tall. Can take a good contested mark.
Probably going to be too short to be drafted as a ruckman but his mobility and great leap would possibly be used to make a strong defender.

Rookie#3
Matt Suckling – 183cm, 84kg – Sandringham Dragons.
Midfielder
He has had a pretty good year this year for Sandy as an overage player. Has come back well after missing a lot of footy last year and has been consistently in Sandringham’s best players. Strong bodied midfielder with reasonable pace. Reads the game well and his skills are generally pretty good. Generally finds a lot of the ball and uses it pretty well.

Of course all of this could change a little depending on draft camp and trade results. Could be a slighty different line up from round three if we do not get another second rounder.
