Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

I wouldnt like to see him at Essendon simply from a development POV. We all know the kind of life he likes to lead, and we have too many impressionable youngsters to have Cousins lurking around. We have cleaned out the club from the "culture problems", and I really dont want to see it return.

What if the man has changed? Remember he was only sacked due to unsubstantiated charges that were later dropped. This is the Ben Cousins that has been training most mornings at Junction Oval by himself doing sprint after sprint. I'd hate to see that rub off on our impressionable players. I couldn't think of a better on field and training role model for a development point of view.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

what did he do to blow his 2nd chance? Got falsely arrested then all charges dropped.

yeh and he was set up for sure. he did put himself in a bad postion, but there was no way it was a random pull over

He hasn't even been charged with anything in his whole footy career.

I'm get a bit pissed off when people say that he will be a bad influence to young players at his new club.

The players are not idiots, they know whats right and wrong.

Stop treating them like babies FFS.

And?

I think most Essendon fans would prefer a 18 yo kid just drafted then a 29 yo ex drugie....

Oh and

1st chance. Booze Bus
2nd chance. The whole drug rehab thing...

Great post. If the players are that impressionable there are far worse characters out there than Ben Cousins that will lead them astray. Let's just think for a minute all the benefits this man could bring to us in a purely football sense.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

No, he'll be what, 31 next year? We are rebuilding and are bleeding youth into the side. Picking up Cousins would be stupid and would be pointless

I think most Essendon fans would prefer a 29 year old super fit brownlow medallist/premiership player who plays on ball than an 18 yo kid just drafted. But we all have our opinions.

Maybe if the '29 yo super fit Brownlow medallist player' hasn't been to rehab for taking drugs, But Cousins has. So I don't want him. I would think I'm not the only one who feels this way...

Getting Watson back in 93 was stupid and pointless when we were rebuilding and bleeding youth into the side too. Look how that turned out. Take out McVeigh and our midfield are extremely inexperienced. Pev and JJ will be gone next year so there is room for an experienced midfielder.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

No way would I want him.

He's not a good role model for the youngsters at the club.

He's too old as we're going through a rebuilding process.

Im sick of recruiting older players such as Murphy, Campo ect just to make us a slightly better team short term, but kills us long term, it's just f**king stupid.

Did his drug taking ever effect his on field performance?

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

It affected his off-field performance. IE Being arrested, Not going to training. And that is just as important as on-field peformance...
You could have just said no. No it didn't. Let's remember Bolts. Never missed a training session and was an absolute mother teresa away from the club feeding the homeless etc. Didn't help his on field performance.

Hmm. Who would you perfer? A player who puts the club before himself, Tries his best all the time and is a popular figure around the club who players look up to. Or a player who perfers to get wasted, not turn up to training and gets into fights with other players.

Give me player A all the time...

I don't think he ever missed a game due to being "wasted". He always gave his best which was exceptional. He was very popular around the club. Yes he missed training when he was affected by drugs. Would he do that when he is not taking drugs? Only scuffle he got in was 6 years ago post season when Kerr hit him. Other fights were Kerr v Embley and Embley v Chick. You might be confused.
The thing you are avoiding is his on field performance. It is absolutely outstanding. Imagine how much he could teach our young on ballers. Contrary to the dribble written in most of the papers players are employed by the clubs to purely play football. Not to be nice blokes or visit kids in hospitals.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

what did he do to blow his 2nd chance? Got falsely arrested then all charges dropped.

Associating with known underworld figures, running from his vehicle under dodgy circumstances and clearly being on an illicit drug every weekend.

Not to mention the stopover on that fateful day in Perth where they had unsubstantiated evidence... they wouldn't have pulled him over for nothing! He just didn't get done over that time! He then left the rehabilitation clinic in the US... whether any of its true, someone hit the nail on the head "he put himself in that situation"!

Having said that everyone deserves another go! If he blows it he gets sacked, no big deal! The contract must cover "lapses in judgement".

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

Wouldn't mind having him but no chance he is coming to essendon he will want to get in a side thats a genuine preimership contender.

He'll want to get in a side that's least conspicuous wouldn't he? I would have thought Essendon, North Melbourne, Melbourne and the Bulldogs would fit that bill. I think it shows a fair deal of courage for him to come back and play... I think that's a quality ANY club would want. :thumbsu:
