Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

we need to get a QUALITY uncontracted midfielder from anywhere ready no matter what age or background have a look at carlton, first stevens then judd to complement a young team and midfield
why cant we do it, with JJ and Pev on the outer, Mcveigh needs quality backup to support him yeah we have kids and they will take time but im sure one or two from somewhere isnt going to hurt go for someone like a Kerr or Cousins who cares about off field stuff THEY CAN PLAY FOOTY

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

He isn't on a current list so therefore he can not be traded for.

This takes away the option of him choosing where he wants to go.

I don't know if he will be eligible for the National Draft or if his only option will be via the PSD.

Whatever option it is he needs to be drafted, so clubs that finish lower on the ladder will have first option of getting him so as much as he might like to get to Collingwood for example, that is far from guaranteed.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

Never thought I'd say this but I think I'd take him, at a low cost. I genuinely feel his turning his life around.

Yes we are rebuilding through youth, but we don't have many older players that can help them through the tough games, the young midfielders are being thrown in there hard while the backmen and forwards have fanatastic players to learn from and develop with. If he shows he is training the house down then I think he can be a good influence.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

It is a good topic and depending on what we would have to pay and providing there was sufficient proof that he was clean, i wouldn't be totally against it but....

Why does it have to be a 30+ year old we go after?

Why don't we target a mid aged player and do what ever we have to do, within reason, to get him?

We have the $, we have the salary cap room and we have the position open.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

yeh would love 2 get cousins. but cant see it happeing with the youth policy we have goin, i rekon him to collingwood is a done deal

So every club that finishes below collingwood are going to go " yep, we wont stand in your way pies, here`s benny on a platter".....

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

Must get Ben Cousins!

We really are at a desperate stage, FFS the bloke is a walking hazard zone, try living in Perth and you would know this is true.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

The problem i have with Ben is he takes a spot away from a younger midfielder and won't be in our next priemership team. A team who is ready to have a crack at a priemership like Collingwood will be much more desperate to pick him up.
He'll just be carrying our midfield and that is not what i want, i'd rather to have McVeigh and Watson leading the pack with Houli, Stanton, Hislop etc getting a run in there rather then having Ben.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

on the age side of things surely you could make an exception for cousins, i mean he's definatly not going to turn out to be a disaster like Camporeale or Cupido they were a waste of time IMO, Maybe a shift from Perth may shake him up and reinvigourate him, would be a handy inclusion to the midfield.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

We should only get him if he garuanteed us he would play until he was 40.

He's to old. Gun player, just too old. We are better off trying to get a younger gun midfielder through trade week instead of picking him up in the PSD.

He's not going to help our rebuilding team. He might be good for a yeaar, maybe 2 but he's not going to have much of an effect.

I reckon he would be a good assistant coach though.

Re: Robert Warnock for Jason Laycock - Anyone Interested?

Didn't he (deLuca) retire?

There are some particularly stupid trade/draft threads going on right now. It's May people!

FFS... Daniel Gilmore. He's pretty much Jason Blake in a ****y sorry slightly more ****y jumper. Adds nothing. Just so you know, 191cm is actually shorter than most of our KPPs, and he wouldn't be a much better ruckman than Fletch or Gumby, let alone Ryder

Exactly, the short term fix isn't the answer. Heck, Sheedy already attempted the short term fix by picking up older players and we were lucky to sneak in the 8 on some occasions

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

The only issue I have is that Cousins comes with a lot of bagage

Drugs and Alco are things that you can never COMPLETELY recover from or get out of your system

That being said, it only takes one small regression. Just one small urge...

Imagine if that happend when he was with ESSendon....we would become the laughing stock of the AFL

Thanks, but no thanks

I hate this poor excuse. If the young midfielders are good enough they will get a game. Cousins would show our midfielders the amount of work it takes to be elite. Judd has been constantly quoted about how Cousins set the benchmark for hard training that he tried to emulate, helped him realise how hard he had to work.

I agree, every player doesn't have to have 50 AFL games experience by the time they are 20

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

In theory he would the perfect footballer to help our midfield. He would be the foil for Watson and McVeigh and he would be the senior guy that can help the kids make the next transition.

Players like Houli, Hislop and the others are about 2 years away from their best football.

I guess you have to weigh up whether the likes of Lonergan, Hocking, Hislop, Houli are going to give us a greater output next year.

I'm 50/50 on this at the moment but once we get to see Hislop and Hocking get some games in them then we can make a call.

Exactly, if we want a gun midfielder to help out the young mids and show them the way then we should just go after a young midfielder who will be able to stick around for a bit and be there when we are ready to challenge for a premiership instead of going after someone like Cousins who would only be around for a few years and most likely retire before we get a chance to challenge for a premiership.

We dont want our young kids taking drugs:p

But on a serious note, we need him

Because they're bloody hard to get, that's why.

Think of the examples of top players who have left in their prime years due to money...

And I wouldn't count Judd in that, I believe that the "go home" factor was far more significant in him deciding to leave.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

have we not learnt anything about recycled players?
if we needed anyone we would go for kerr.

no point drafting cousins, he only has 1 or 2 years left anyway really and in those 2 years we wont really be pushing for a priemership

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

No we musn't.

If people think he will ever change they are fooling themselves. He is a self absorbed tosser & does whatever he wants & thinks only about himself.

Don't want him & don't need him.

Re: We must draft Ben Cousins

it makes me laugh. When we had him every other club wanted him and us lynched! Drug addict, drug cheat, criminal, selfish, shafted his club blah blah

Now he's up for grabs, he aint that bad :thumbsu:

Hypocrites. :D

Now excuse me while i copy and paste this onto every other oppositions board
