Michael Long is walking to canberra to get to meet John Howard.

Apart from the obvious joke about most not crossing the street to meet him will some kind soul mention to Longy that the sneaky bugger is usually found in sydney

GOLD :D

When I heard this, I was quite surprised that little johnny said he would meet with Longy, though will not be surprised if when he gets there, some excuse is found for little johnny to get out of it, call me cynical. :p

Really what can John Howard do?

''There there Michael yes I understand Michael...is this going to take long Michael?''

Both his parents were stolen generation. That's why when John Howard and some of his ministers began floating the idea that the Stolen Generation was a myth, Long reacted by writing Howard a letter. He had it in his pocket when he went to Alcaston Gallery to meet one of the old Aboriginal artists such as Ginger Riley, who influenced him so deeply, both to take up art and in his understanding of his culture

JWH has publicly stated he wont apologise for the stolen generation. IMO the issue of the stolen generation has frozen countless welfare agencies and judicial processes that should IMO have been exercised.

The essential difference between Patrick Dodson's idea of reconciliation and "practical reconciliation" is that the first says that Aboriginal issues and issues of Australian history are inseparable. "Practical reconciliation" eliminates historical issues altogether, thereby taking us back, in a single blink, to the attitude generally held during John Howard's boyhood.

What's changed is that a young Aboriginal leader, Cape York's Noel Pearson, is now advocating social remedies that are in keeping with Howard's basic political beliefs. But do these have the support of Aboriginal communities across Australia and what happens if, as I suspect, they are implemented without their agreement?

And as to the other, then ML and the aboriginal community must do something themselves and follow Noel Pearsons lead in ''social remedies''. Its all well and good putting your hand out but practical solutions such as Rio Tintos '' Northern Exposure''program.

Yeah, Michael Long obviously seeking publicity for himself.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but MGREG might not be too far off the mark. Didn't the government recently appoint a new board of Aboriginal advisors to replace the old ATSIC board? I'm pretty sure that Adam Goodes was appointed to that board, but not Michael Long.

Surely Long could have used his contact with Goodes to arrange a meeting with Howard, and if that didn't happen, then do the walk.

Exactly shinners.

Long calls off walk
November 30, 2004 - 3:41PM

Former AFL footballer Michael Long has called off his epic walk to Canberra after Prime Minister John Howard agreed to meet him on Friday to discuss the plight of indigenous Australia.

Long announced that a meeting time had been fixed after he reached Albury today at about 12.40pm, almost halfway through his 700-plus kilometre walk from Melbourne to Canberra.

Long said the meeting would be held at the prime minister's office in Parliament House in Canberra on Friday afternoon.

Well done to Longy.

I still can't forgive him for the Simmonds incident in the 2000 Grand Final, but I can admire him for this.

Aboriginal issues represents one of the failures of Howard's government. Let's hope Johnny uses this fourth term to correct that. Well done to Long for getting Howard's attention and a special well done to the next Prime Minister (and an Essendon supporter) Peter Costello who helped secure the meeting.

Yes Howard has certainly failed in this regard. Throwing billions of taxpayers money at the problem and achieving bugger all.

On another note, so any half decent former footballer can now demand a meeting with the pm can they?

I wouldnt mind what he did if he was upfront and said he was looking to run for a seat but to talk about the ''plight'' of the Aboriginals as a political football makes him just as bad as any other politician looking for that edge.

No it ended when the Prime Minister decided he can actually spend a little bit of time meeting a concerned citizen (something that any member of a Government appointed committee really isn't..in those roles they are mainly a "yes" person to the Minister responsible).

If Long wants to run for the Senate, all well and good..he's better than ****************s like Robert Hill etc
