Michael Voss - New assistant coach at Collingwood.

I've said this before but I've never at any stage seen proper evidence that Voss is any good at coaching.

The Lions looked good for brief patches over his time there, yet never looked like consistently playing a brand of football that suggested he was a great planner, tactician, communicator or motivator.

He'd obviously be very good as a specialist mentor with midfielders, but as an actual assistant or line coach? That's a pretty senior role these days with a need to plan, teach and implement structures.

He's got everywhere he has on his name from the playing days. Can't help thinking that with the war chest Colingwooe persist, they could have gained a far more successful and proven assistant coach.

Spot-on. It is a weird world. The guy got found at as not being able to coach over a long period of time. Since his departure his reputation has somehow become enhanced, you can even see that from this thread. He is a "good get" as an assistant. Why? It is just bizarre.

He was improving all the time as a coach, I think there's definitely enough there to say he could be a good assistant. Works well with youth and his rebounding style will work well however it's integrated into the Pies current gameplan (if at all).

I'm not making him out to be some kind of master tactician or anything, because he's not. But he'll make the players get a lot out of themselves and has developed the youth well at Brisbane.

His reputation has been 'enhanced' because people realised we were actually not an awful team anymore and it is seemingly becoming more and more apparent the Lions didn't make the right decision, or at least do their due diligence before making it.

It's not all about the win loss record, especially with such an inexperienced side. He'll be a good sidekick to Buckley with Eade overseeing the football department for seniority.

To be honest, nobody can make the call that's he's not a good assistant as he's never been one properly before. He does however have 107 games of senior coaching experience with an inexperienced side. The proof (or not) will be in the pudding as always. I think it says something that with the Pies resources they could have snagged almost anyone, but they chose Voss.

Plus, does the world 'assistant' necessarily mean there's no talk of 'development'? Mark Williams is classified as an 'assistant'. I think Voss's role will not primarily be a gameday one.

It will be incredibly odd seeing Voss in Pies colours though :p.

Confirmed by a few reliable sources over the past hour. Good luck to him, but we'll always miss him.

The Lions board look like the biggest fools in the world. Just when he was starting to groom into the role..

Watching him and Buckley work together on game day will be very nice to watch. 2 incredible footballers back in the day, now coaching the same team to a win.

Congrats Collingwood!

2nd & 3rd best players in the Pies coaching group. Someone should tell Ed to start seeking coaching talent rather than playing talent.

This is great news for all non Collingwood supporters. With Voss's record of running his club into the ground and Buckley's record of taking a grand final team to mid table these two are gonna work some magic down at Collingwood.

Too late, Vossy. See, you should have done this 5 years ago. Learn the caper, get the stupid ideas out of your system (First year: 'I know everything! I will revolutionise coaching!'. Fifth year: 'Ha, Ha, yes, that was embarassing'.), and THEN return to save the faithful on a flaming charger (mixing metaphors along the way).

Not sure what they want to achieve down at Pie land. Two average coaches at best. Maybe the new succession plan by McGuire.

They both thought they were great but we all know how this has panned out so far. The Pies have started their clean out and culture shift but it doesn't look like they are going in the right direction.

Couldn't be happier for this arrogant, egotistical and megalomaniac of a club.

Something Voss should have done years earlier. The arrogance of the man destroyed his own team because he thought he was to good to be an assistant coach.

Thought Voss had taken a job as assistant at West Coast before being offered the, suddenly vacated, Lions position. Hard to blame him for making that decision.

Very good get for the Pies in my view. Was kinda hoping MM would have a crack at him for us but, obviously out trumped by the Pies cause we can't make any decision on our coaching staff until season over for us.

Incorrect. Blues & Pies swapping fitness bosses

Don't think that will turn out correct on what I know.

Butters definitely going to blues, but hearing Cordy not going to pies.

Pies supposedly have recruiting net massively wide. Although Saunders would be a massive get if true.

On what you know? don't we all say that to make people think we have sources?

I've seen in a couple of media articles since the news of Butters leaving that the Blues fitness guru could very well be heading to Pies.

Cordy could make a straight swap with Buttifant, after developing a strong relationship with Collingwood’s new head of football Rodney Eade at the Western Bulldogs.
