Michael Voss - New assistant coach at Collingwood.

Interesting move. I am not convinced the board sacking him was a bad move regardles of a late season revival of sorts. All things being equal I would have liked to have seen Neeld back at Collingwood as midfield coach. Voss has the playing CV to do the job as well as anyone and has now had experiance as a coach so it may well be a great appointment. If nothing else he can be a good soundinmg board for Buckley. There's not that much less risk with an assistant appiontment that can be juggled or cut at any time. The appointment also doesn't preclude any other appointments so I can only really see upside.

So, how does that effect that age old equation of: Hird > Voss > Buckley ?
Easy!! Head to head as coaches.

Buckely vs Voss - 2 - 0

Buckley vs Hird - 3 - 1

Hird vs Voss - 2 - 1

Thus --- Buckley > Hird > Voss :thumbsu:

Doesn't surprise me in one respect because Voss and Buckley are good mates off field, going back to Buckley's year at the Bears in '96. Good move for Vossy, although seeing him in black and white will kill me. I'll just have to watch this every time just to get over it.

Will also announce they have poached Steve Saunders from North to take Buttifant's job in the next week.
2011 wants its opinion back.
This is the same North that we have seen stop in the last qtr time and time again this season?
because a physio looks after fitness?
didnt stop us running over the top of you 2 weeks ago

How would Buckley go having two better footballer's in the coach's box than him Harvey and Voss.

Well, North are known for their supreme fitness and ability to run out games.

Good gets, Collingwood.

I do, what does that have to do with Saunders?

Your question / statement seems to imply it is odd to have a physio run a sports science dept. When Buttifant initially moved from North to Collingwood in 2001 to head up that dept. he was North's physio.

No he wasn't, he was their fitness advisor. Gordon McDonald (my physio) was the physiotherapist between 89-08.

Anything else you would like to get wrong? You're having a pearler.

He was improving all the time as a coach, I think there's definitely enough there to say he could be a good assistant. Works well with youth and his rebounding style will work well however it's integrated into the Pies current gameplan (if at all).

I'm not making him out to be some kind of master tactician or anything, because he's not. But he'll make the players get a lot out of themselves and has developed the youth well at Brisbane.

His reputation has been 'enhanced' because people realised we were actually not an awful team anymore and it is seemingly becoming more and more apparent the Lions didn't make the right decision, or at least do their due diligence before making it.

It's not all about the win loss record, especially with such an inexperienced side. He'll be a good sidekick to Buckley with Eade overseeing the football department for seniority.

To be honest, nobody can make the call that's he's not a good assistant as he's never been one properly before. He does however have 107 games of senior coaching experience with an inexperienced side. The proof (or not) will be in the pudding as always. I think it says something that with the Pies resources they could have snagged almost anyone, but they chose Voss.

Plus, does the world 'assistant' necessarily mean there's no talk of 'development'? Mark Williams is classified as an 'assistant'. I think Voss's role will not primarily be a gameday one.

It will be incredibly odd seeing Voss in Pies colours though :p.

well said!!

Is the Brisbane exodus because Voss was awesome and any club would be lucky to get him, or - as Wayne Brittain apparently suggests - because player development under Voss was terrible? It is impossible to tell from out here whether Voss would be a coup or just a great name.
