Mid-Season wake up call

Yeah thats true, just not sure why he is the first called in when someone goes down or gets suspended, seems like there are a few others that play his role better at the moment, Stevens has to be the obvious choice, or put A selwood through the middle at stages and bring in smith etc to fill his spot.

A.Selwood as a midfielder is so 2010. With Priddis alongside him, it's too much plod in such a vital area of the ground. WC need dynamic players in the centre square. Even if it's just in stages, I'm still against such a move.

Fair point, can always use hard bodies in the contest though, which swift does not have. Selwood is slow but he would not be in there to be an outside runner, he would be there to win contested footy, much like priddis

WC likely used A.Selwood in the middle in 2010 with the same reasoning - in that he's a hardened, senior, player - we saw how that turned out. I think it's time that such a limited option is bypassed. WC have the players who can do a better job, but it may take the coaching staff to modify how those better players go about their role. S.Selwood is a good example of how modifying a role can work out, if the talent is their in the first place. A.Selwood is more limited.

We definitely have better players now to play that role, its just when someone goes down its always swift that comes in and I think there are better options, obviously with a full squad to pick from A selwoods best position is in the backline, maybe not even in the best 22 when it comes down to it, lets hope we don't have anymore injuries and our midfield stays as is, that is without swift in it!

I believe that that Stevens and Swift need those opportunities when they arise, so that they get fair opportunity, as well as to know where they stand as to how viable an AFL career really is. Are WC going to persist with guys who're largely untested but spend year-in-year-out in the WAFL? Time is coming when WC will have to make a definitive call as to where these guys stand. That can't happen when WC revert back to the meh option of A.Selwood, unless someone like Swift has already had his papers stamped.

In a way, Swift getting games now is good for someone who isn't a Swift fan. This is because it brings the club closer to making a definitive call on Swift, one way or the other.
Then again, with Swift being from WA, WC may use Swift as they used Josh Wooden - as a guy who's forever the fill in due to others' injuries. This is if Swift is content to allow this eventuality for his footballing career.

If Swift is to make for a decent trade, he needs games pumped into him - so as to show off his capabilities and potential to potential suitors. Same applies to Stevens.
If the games pumped into these two turn out that they shine, all the better for them and the club.

It would be good to be able to have a good win in the centre clearances and a clinical display of telepathy between Nik Nat and his midfielders. In periods of games when we have been under huge pressure from the opposition we have found it difficult to rebound with our running and carrying not to mention being able to break and bullock the tackling and positioning of bigger more experienced mids. Until we are that bit stronger and seasoned it is our clearance work from the centre and ability to find forward targets and kicking the goals when we are "on" that will be the difference in the big games to come this year.
