He got 38 votes for his good season.
There were plenty of better players this year despite the vote count.

Absolutely nothing splitting the two of them.

I mean sure, if you don't watch the actual games I suppose you could form that opinion.

Call me old fashioned but when holding hands, whose hand is on top displays the more dominant of the two.

As I said old fashioned and it is a one off photo. Both seem happy though so who am I to say and really hope works out for them!

Harley couldn't stay back the extra 10 minutes at training coz he needed to get home to get the dishes done and dinner on the stove in time for his Mrs to get home.

The implication that Cripps and Daicos just put out the best and second best individual seasons of the modern era is farcical.

Brownlow is really losing its lustre, better to just read the top scoring AFL Fantasy players and throw a dart. Both exceptional players but be reasonable.

Bont 14th is a disgrace.

I still think it’s too much asking umpires to be game analysts but without any data.

They can barely see free kicks and now they have to count possessions, cross check with each other and decide.

Let them see stats. It’s impossible to believe a 32 possession, 2 goal player wasn’t at very least top 2 players on ground.

A purely stat merit award would take away from the unknown/suspense of the on the night count, as everyone would know the outright leader at the end of the season.

A fan voted system would be recipe for disaster and a popularity contest.

NRL apparently have judges but the double up with AA is an interesting one.

I just think the AFLCA holds more and more weight, and stock in the Brownlow is fading. They rarely throw up some enormous howler of a result, but the leaderboard usually leaves plenty to be desired for one reason or another.

Maybe a panel of recently retired players? A mix of captains who have hung it up recently? Very hard to seperate biases and, as you say, faith in the media’s ability to not just fawn over the same three players is also at an all time low, but it being an umpires award is sitting less and less well with folks as time goes on.

I think it would be help if the framing stopped being around this is the game’s elite, as it’s clearly a midfield award for the ‘best mid from a good but not elite team without many players to steal votes’ award.

Norf with 12 more votes on a team basis despite winning two less games and with inferior percentage.

Perception was they were more competitive than us in games this year but the latter stat doesn’t really support that assertion.

They've got players who rack up big numbers, we don't.

Sheezel, Xerri, McKercher, LDU are all fantasy seagulls who rack up cheap touches and therefore rack up votes.

We don't have anyone who accumulates touches like they do.




We only had 4 players average more than 20 touches a game, and no one above 25.



North had 7 players over 20 touches a game, and 2 over 25. Plus they had Xerri having an absolute career year.

Random thoughts :

• North a total outlier - a team winning just 3 games polling 42 votes is nonsense - LDU (18) and Sheezel (15) the main reason
• Rowell v West Coast is an automatic 3 votes- another two BOGs vs is this year
• Fremantle missed finals but received =3rd most votes. Serong and Brayshaw with 50 between them
• Geelong finished 3rd but had 8 clubs poll more votes than them and had the lowest votes per win with just 4.53
• Cripps (45-40) and Daicos (38-30) both out-polled the rest of their respective clubs put together
• We only had 6 players poll votes - the fewest of any club
• Reid (7) polled the most votes of any first year player. McKercher and Sanders with a vote each were the only other first year players to receive votes. Rising star winner Dempsey received 3 votes along with Sam Darcy who, like Reid, was ineligible to win the RS
• GWS and Hawthorn had a league high 14 individual vote getters
• Heeney (28), Gulden (25) and Warner (23) polled 76 votes between them - more than the total for ten other clubs

Sanders stats in that game he picked up a vote are completely shadowed by Bonts game, too.

He had 22 touches, Bont had 32 and kicked a couple snags and didn't even get a vote

Best panel would be former award winners, eg a selection of Coleman medallists, some AA defenders, ex captains, Brownlow medallists etc. to ensure all positions and play styles are accounted for.

Probably most of these guys with an interest have gone into the media anyway, but an award winners award could give it that ‘best’ quality it is now missing.

It feels like leading players get more votes than they did 20 years ago

There's an extra game in the season now so more votes on offer. And with more dilution of talent in the league now (after adding GWS/GC) maybe the star players standout more than they did 20 years ago. Certainly feels like there's less players accumulating the votes to me, the umps probably have 3 or 4 players in my mind of who they're going to give votes to before the game even starts.

Also, everyone saying it's nonsense that North got that many votes needs to stop looking at it from a team perspective. The votes are given based on individual performances, not a team's performance. Doesn't matter if Norf got smashed by 80 points, if LDU was the best player on the ground he should rightfully get maximum votes for that game.
