That he did. As a player his always been able to do the flashy things and has always loved a goal. But I think he plays his best footy as a mid dropping back. His very good defensively. Love his defensive pressure eg that smoother in the last few minutes against WC. It's real team lifting stuff. Mick brought that aspect to his game.

Genuine question:

How is it determined which players will be to go into the centre square ball-ups, at the beginning of quarters and after every goal?
They would have a set rotation that would be stuck with after goals and reviewed at each quarter break. Runners or a player coming off the bench (usually leadership group) make any adjustments as the quarter goes on.

I often see leadership players making adjustments or directing players when we go to reset after a goal.

Needless to say each player is assigned a role to perform at a bounce and they can rotate certain players that perform similar roles.

I hope this is what you were asking.

Blaine Johnson Impressed me against st kinda last year and since then ive kept closer look on him. Naturally a medium sized forward but could be used as a mid at times. Very much a good depth
Player who could be used at stages this season if there are injures and suspensions or want to rest a few against the weaker sides when we make our run To September!

This may well be the year we start seeing the changing of the guard where our midfield is concerned.
The core group of mids setting up at centre bounces largely came from Gibbs, Murphy, Curnow along with Judd and Carrazzo, even though they only participated for half of last year.
I didn't see all the games so I'm happy to be corrected but whichever way, one may expect to see some new faces at the coal-face this year.

Given there are approximately 25 goals per game, that would give you 26 occasions to get first hands on the ball through centre bounces efforts.

Thomas - Now that he's got his spring back, I'd expect him to rotated through the centre a lot more than last year.
Cripps - May well be the guy that gets the first shot at being our extractor. Club has high hopes...Cripps is high in courage.
Graham - Opportunity the key. Can play at this level and has an innate understanding of where the ball will go. Blue collar worker but that's O.K.
Menzel - This year would be a great starting point for someone who won't waste too many possession and thinks well ahead of the game.
Whiley - A largely unknown quantity but he has all the right attributes to give things a shake.
Docherty - Maybe not this year but another player with very good awareness and quick to execute.
Bell - May well be used for reasons other than getting first hands on the ball. Just a little sloppy under pressure and not great awareness.

Who do you expect to make their mark in the middle this year and why?

Anyone know how Whiley has been tracking this pre-season? I just have a gut feel that he may be present in our team come the first round due to his hunger and desperation to win the ball around the stoppages. He would be a little more advanced/developed than Cripps at this stage (older and more years of development in the AFL system). I expect these two to be given plenty of midfield time in 2015 and be the new faces of our midfield.

Is that not damaging enough?

As other people have previously stated, when he's up and going, easily in our top 5 players.

I reckon if Tex is fit, he could have a Robbie Gray-esque season. I know they're a different type of player but he's at a ripe age and has all the tools... dare I say he could challenge for AA again? Only question is at which end of the ground... Personally I think he was the most dangerous off a HFF kicking 30-50 goals, and with Simmo, Doc, Sheehan, Tuohy, Yaz Bucks and the like bringing the footy out of the D50 - Walker should be able to resume this role with ease (barring a huge injury collapse).

I'd like to see Tex play 60% half-forward and 40% running from the HB line and through the middle... that's how we best utilise him imho.

Modern day midfields are at least 10 players who rotate through the guts

Locks for the midfield:
Murphy - No 1 draft pick
Judd - No 3 draft pick
Gibbs - No 1 draft pick
Thomas - No 2 draft pick
Curnow - Rookie draft
Everitt - No 11 draft pick

Fighting for a spot:
Carrazzo - Rookie draft (due to last few years being injured couldn't place him in 1st group)
Cripps - No 13 draft pick
Graham - No 54 draft pick
Whiley - NSW Zone selection
Bell - Rookie draft
Boekhorst - No 19 draft pick
Docherty - No 12 draft pick
Menzel - No 11 draft pick

1st Ruck
Kruezer -No 1 draft pick

Looking at where our midfield players have been drafted and with everyone fit our midfield really should be 1 of the best in the league.
What we need to see fast is more of the guys in the second group move there names into the first group so we don't rely too much on few too many.

Still on paper with everyone fit this looks promising :)

Would need a full/good pre-season to do a Robbie Gray. Think he has only started running recently? (happy to be wrong)

"In some of the scrimmage play we have been doing, we have put him with [Chris] Judd and [Bryce] Gibbs on the inside to work with those better players and I think that has also helped him blossom as well."

"He has a lot of grunt and does his best work inside but can go forward and mark the footy."

Was a good read that article. Interesting to see how he shapes up in the pre-season games.

Perhaps his greatest impression came post-season when he returned home to the family farm in Northhampton, Western Australia, and hired his own running coach. Typically, it takes a handful of years for youngsters to embrace the discipline, work and harsh self-assessment required to be an elite player. Not so with Cripps.
It's that level of commitment we never saw with previous draft picks, it's beginning to look like the blues are recruiting players that can bring in a positive attitude and leadership qualities. Cripps sounds like he could be a future captain one day.

Cripps will be a beauty but we're not being let down by others work ethic either................Buckley, Docherty, Holman, Graham and all reports are very favourable for last years draftees also.

It's exactly what we need.............pushing leaders from the bottom up.

Being a self-motivated person is a brilliant quality, especially for an elite sportsman...but not necessarily a quality we've had a surplus of over the last few years. It's really exciting to read articles like that one.

It's the one thing I was very concerned about 2-3 years ago.
Players being touted as future leaders just couldn't/didn't step up.....McCarthy, O'Keeffe, Mitchell.....

Hearing really good things about this years kids in DVR, Boekhorst, Walsh, Foster etc.
When the work ethic is strong through the younger end of the squad, it will invariably push the established players a little harder also.

It's one of those things that's hard to prove, yet common sense tells you that it just does.
