Let's forget for a second that Hussey has been the only Australian player to give a yelp in the series thus far...

The scenario is - rain is on the way, at the most its probably 3 hours away and you've got the lunch break to come. You also still have 1.5 recognised batsman at the crease (North = 0.5) + Haddin + the tail still to come, so there is still enough batting remaining.

Some may disagree with me here, but surely in this instance runs aren't important. Yes, you do want to show some intent to score, but that should come a clear second behind valuing your wicket and trying to salvage a draw with aid from the weather.

All these things considered....WTF was Hussey doing attempting to pull a slightly short-of-a-length ball in this situation?

Hindsight is wonderful, but that was an irresponsible, idiotic shot given the state of the match

Can understand him doing it, it was there to be hit - and you have to be positive and score runs in the situation.

The problem was in the application of it. When you want to pull a ball from that far outside off stump going across you, a pretty big moverment of the back foot towards the offside is required, regardless of how well you've been hitting front foot pull shots through recent innings.

I'm sure no-one feels worse about it right now than he does.

But you see plenty of boundaries hit in conservative innings where runs aren't paramount. It's still important for a batsman to feel natural in their game and put pressure back on the bowlers. It was a poor choice of shot but only for the risk of mistiming it, which unfortuantely for us he did.

Stupid thread really. If you go through every dismissal in that innings or any of our innings in fact most came from a poor decision from the batsman. There's really nothing to be gained from roasting our only performing batsman in the series thus far.

If you think it would have made a difference think again...we were flogged. Lets be honest here, and I say this as an Aussie fan. I would rather get smashed than the weather save our arse (and hence North would stay). Short term pain for long term gain if we lost that test match.

The thing is - you really don't have to be positive IMO

The shot was poor as was the shot selection but in that situation you let it through to the keeper or block it into the ground

How many times had he pulled Finn to the fence in this series? It was an instinctive shot. Poor shot selection perhaps, but hell, he must be knackered already from trying to get through the series with the rest of the line-up bar Haddin tugging at his ankles.

no, let's not forget that.

Huss was probably tired after carrying the rest of the team on his shoulders.

Huss was tired after deflecting the chorus of calls for him to go before brisbane.

I think under the circumstances we can excuse him One rash shot in a test where we were floundering after his VC also played a rash shot the previous day to get out to a part timer.

where's your thread about clarke's second innings dismissal?

Agree with this.

Was a dumb shot, clearly a momentary lapse in concentration.

He'd rightly be disgusted at himself for it, but considering he's been playing the lone ranger, I'm not going to crucify him for it.

Given the state of the game...

Hussey's second innings 'get out" shot...

was the worst shot in nearly 140 years of Test Cricket

Hussey only needed to get through the second new ball and with the rain, Australia would have drawn the game...

I wouldn't be calling Clarke's dismissal a rash shot. He didn't exactly throw his wicket away with a slog or a risky shot. I guess when your mind is made up not based on skill but based on how you percieve a person you were never going to have a clue.

Clarke's dismissal was the opposite of the risky shot, it was what happens when you stop playing your natural game. Normally he would've pulled that ball for 4, but since it was last over of the day he thought i'll just try and do a dinky little dab for a single.

Hussey stuffed up the execution, but I have no problem with what he was trying to do. Remember what happened when England decided they weren't going to bother trying to score runs on day 5 at Adelaide 4 years ago.

The point of the thread is, Clarke is absolutely crucified for making 80 odd and getting out on a defensive shot (because people seem to dislike him) and because Huss is the perennial favourite, he can play a ridiculous shot and it's fine by people.

Double standards.

Clarke's shot to get out for zero in the first innings was far worse.

that is the one he should be crucified for.

Leaving Australia 3/2 and virtually "Dead in the Water!"

rubbish!

how many people were asking for huss to be sacked < ashes?????

Huss is no "perennial favourite" but has had a very good ashes thus far on form.
Clarke shouldn't have played the first test and shouldn't have got out when he did in the manner he did to who he did.
80 was good from him, but as the VC of australia the supporters expected a bit more from him.
I think his team needed a bit more from him rather than a lapse of concentration (again) resulting in any realistic chances of even a draw being evaporated.
