Mini Draft - WCE a strong contender

What else do we have to give up along with Brown?

Have you heard who we would like to take with the 2nd MD out of Hogan/Martin/Sheed?

Melbourne are very keen on Hogan and might go after him via the 1st MD pick.
To replace Watts? o_O

This is clarified with "perhaps", hence making my statement unclear because I haven't been tracking the U17s myself.
I would assume that because we have enough tall forwards to lease out to teams like PA/Dogs that we'd only consider Hogan because he really is the best available.
Moving ahead our needs are much more tailored for quality midfielders, which there are a few available in the mini-draft.
So you tell me, you posted Hogan, if we were to receive the 2nd mini-draft pick is he the best use of this pick?

I will go on record to say I would pick Hogan over Martin. He is a pure, old school footballer, alot like Darling.

On another, related note, I would rather the best KPP in the league and the 20th best midfielder, over the best midfielder and 20th best KPP.

Hmmm. I am undecided on whether I agree or not. It's a toughy.

Out of interest what did clubs offer GWS last year for places in the mini-draft?

I'm struggling to remember but I think Gold Coast gave up pick 4 in the main draft to get the 1st pick in the mini-draft

From memory Adelaide gave up their first pick plus 1st rounder they got for Davis, plus they got a mature ager I think..

In effect picks 10 (Liam Sumner) and pick 11 (Toby Greene) for Brad Crouch and Luke Brown a midfielder from Norwood.

GC gave up pick 4 (Will Hoskin Elliott) for O'Meara and #31 which went to Adelaide who used it to get Josh Jenkins from Ess who in turn used #31 on Jackson Merritt

Realistically both Martin and Hogan would be rated more highly than Crouch so one would assume would demand more compensation.

I said before last years draft that Brown should have been used as currency to secure a Mini pick as i saw him only as depth. Nearly 12 months on and while he is still a depth player when Brown has suited up for us i have been very impressed with his game. So much so i would hate to lose him now. If GWS were offering pick 2 it would be very hard to pass up on however i doubt they would do it for Brown straight up.
More likely they would want another player or picks to round out the deal. I would prefer to hold onto our first round pick in case we get lucky and someone very good slides to us but that might not be possible. I expect this to be a very active trade period for us with players like Stevens, Strijk, Stevenson, Brown, Smith & Lynch attracting interest. While some like Strijk and Stevenson would get us bugger all and Lynch could just walk, Smith,Stevens & Brown could be very handy bargaining chips if used wisely.

Could we very well see our most active draft period in years? So many players being mentioned it is making my head spin.

Couple of things worth noting before we all get carried away

1) No club, especially one in contention, is likely to voluntarily trade away 3 players who are verging on best 22, especially with at least 1 under contract. WC are a conservative club so it makes this highly highly unlikely.
2) With 2 compromised drafts on the trot, its is going to take something special for a club to hand over a 1st round pick unless they have multiple 1st round picks. Conca for WC's 1st rounder (and a selected player) is a no brainer (& Richmond would have to have no brains to do it), but WC would want to be pretty sure of themselves to hand over a player like Brown & their 1st rounder for a mini pick.
3) WC are aware of where their problems lie and the time frames they have to work within and a mini pick doesnt solve their immediate window problems.

id go for it if true only because an opportunity of getting a young gun comes around rarely (like we were lucky with darling).

seems that KP backs take a while to mature like ruckmen, should look at rookie listing one or 2 from the WAFL that are already maturing like Anderson from EP or Howlett from EF and see if they can step up should injuries occur or form dictates. never know might uncover a Harry Taylor

If this rumour is true, BIG IF, then we can look at procuring the services of Hooker or Pears as a replacement for Brown
I was thinking this, especially with talk of Stevens and/or Smith going back east.

Sounds a little crazy and of course depends on whether these players really do want to leave, but an outcome of...
OUT: Stevens, Smith, Brown
IN: Myers, Pears/Hooker, Hogan/Martin/Sheed
...could work out well for us.
Maintain KPD depth, get a big bodied midfielder (who can also pinch hit in defence) and get another top-line talent.
I'm a fan of Brown but as others have said, it would be hard to turn down an opportunity to get such a prized youngster.

Will a draftee be ready in a two years time when Glass retires? We might have to look at drafting a mature age KPD to fill the gap.

Do we need a player like Hogan, or should we go after midfield talent if we do get the 2nd MD pick?

I remember reading a few weeks ago about a Vic mid who's apparently jumped up the rankings ahead of Martin, Hogan etc.
We need a KPD who could play next year if we trade Brown.

So...

1. Brown to Giants for mini-draft pick
2. Stevens / Smith to Essendon for Hooker / Pears
3. LeCras / Nicoski return

Hell, based on the flying players we have Waters, Nicoski and LeCras all best 22, with two wingmen/flankers flying to replace Waters this week.

Gives us a net return of:

1. Backup KPD to mitigate loss of Brown.
2. In LeCras someone capable of filling Stevens midfield role.
3. Resultant more midfield time for Masten in the event of injury.
4. Small / Medium forward cover in Nicoski. Also worth a look as a wingman / flanker.
5. More opportunity for Swift / Stevenson, who appear to be more in favour than Stevens anyway.

and

6. A shiny mini-draft pick to use on a potential top-5 pick from 2013.

I don't think there's a huge loss between Pears / Hooker and Brown. Essentially it becomes Stevens for mini-draft pick. It's a nice scenario if it could be pulled off. Last time we did something as radical as this was shipping Godden to Freo and Downsborough to Port.

Thing is, Greene could be every bit as good as Crouch, if not better. Both very similar types of player.
