Minor things that annoy you about the game

The 50m penalty for very minor things. The SANFL has had the 25m and 50m penalties since 1991, why can't the AFL?

all those 'technical' free kicks are the biggest reason why people are frustrated with the sport.

the worst one is 50m for not throwing the ball back and hitting the player dead on the chest.

Minor things that annoy you about the game :
  • The AFL's inability to deliver a fair draw.
  • The AFL's inability and unwillingness to manage their business with integrity (pays lip service only)
  • Commentators that "barrack"
  • Commentators that don't do their homework and can't name players or who are more interested in telling stories than calling the actual game
  • Umpires that seem to have a thing for/against particular sides/players
  • Umpires that don't consistently apply the same interpretation to a rule within the same game.

Agree but would not call those minor :(

what if there's 2 minutes left in the GF, a side is up by 6 points, and its full back just rushes in behinds to kill the clock?
The fact that players kicking for goal are allowed up to 30 seconds to have their kick while players are allowed much less in other parts of the ground before play on gets called. Have a common length.

How would this work in practice though?

You'll either dramatically lower set shot accuracy by rushing players or alternatively give teams trying to slow the game down forever to hold the ball and play keep away.

The current system is odd but it works

I get why this happens, but I hate when (for example) a player is awarded a free kick while the ball is simultaneously kicked down the field. The players of the offending team will run away from the ball not wanting to give it back, forcing a teammate of the player with the free kick to run over and retrieve it. Same when a free kick occurs and the opposition player will just stand above the footy and hold things up. Just bend down, hand it back and get on with things!

Yes, this exactly.
Does my ****ing head in.

Commentators that think it's a 'good call' when a set-in-stone best 22 player suffers a minor injury (but serious enough to be taken from the ground to be assessed) during a NAB game and is then put in cotton wool for the remainder of the game.

It's actually such a mind-bogglingly obvious call that I think even a 10-year old could be trusted to get it right.

While umpiring can always be improved, the focus put on a couple of mistakes they make is way too much.

Players routinely butcher ****ing 20 meter kicks, fail to execute basic tackles, or simply ignore the rules. Lindsay Thomas missed from 2 meters out last night. That's the equivalent of calling it high when it was an around the waste tackle imo. But when a team loses a close game it's all whinge whinge whinge the umpires said this the umpires did this. How about focusing on the 500k a year players making mistakes a 12 year old could execute rather than the part-time umpires a bit more...

Indicted players should never have their incident footage be shown in slow motion, it exaggerates the incident in favour of the victim. It should be shown at normal speed and the judges have to adjudicate on it from the speed the umpires saw it.

Agreed. They slow the footage down, and say "see you could have avoided bumping". Umm play that in real time and the bumper had no ****ing chance but to brace for impact

I said years back that same thing, maybe if they had to watch the replay in super fast motion as well as the super slow motion ? might balance it back.

Im not sure if it's minor because personally I find the rule absolutely abhorrent. But the whole "sliding in and tacking the legs out" free kick is a ****ing joke.

Punish the player going for the ball. Typical AFL nanny-state over umpiring crap. Makes pathetic watching.

Just saw the Free Kick against Daisy v Swans on Friday. He dives for the ball, gets there first, takes possesion and gets kicked in the head. Free kick against him. What a joke AFL

How about this?:

A player who decides to take a set shot at goal must signal to the umpire that he wants to take a shot. Then he would be given 30 seconds to take the shot, but if he fails to score with his kick, the opposition gets the free kick from the exact spot where the player just took the set shot. Very radical, but it would eliminate the "grey" area in the rules.

Commentators that don't call a game as it plays out. Instead continuously dwell on the last play and use hindsight to make themselves sound smart and all knowing like they've never made the wrong decision. Dunstal I'm looking at you.
And four-peat. What the hell now afl.com.au is using it. Its not clever. Three-peat was and that was stolen from another sport and now we use four-peat?
must have been up all night working on that one.
