Minor things that annoy you about the game

1) umpires paying holding the ball against a team when an an opposition player is the one that has dragged the ball under them. Absolutely NOTHING the player on the bottom of the pack can do (the one that has made a tough attempt to be first to the ball) and it is happening far too frequently. The umpires just don't catch on.

This is different from a player diving on the ball, in which case the onus is fairly on that player to get it out as they had the prior opportunity to knock the ball on.

If you haven't seen a player dive on it or drag the ball in under themselves, then don't pay the bloody free kick based on an assumption! It's the opposition bloke that's dragged it into him and then held the ball there.

2) commentators that don't know some of the rules of the game properly. Shits me to no end.

Quite often the ball is put over the line deliberately but it has rarely* been paid - though it seems they are cracking down on it this year.

My #1 gripe - shit commentators - really ruins some games for me.

Some commentators openly barrack during games - Im looking at you Bruce.

You should know by now that it's a shits n giggles day out for such buffoons. I agree.. nobody is in the D!ck Stockton league of commentating.

Let's get the goal umpires back into white coats and hats.

Definitely.

Some signals by the umps to indicate WTF the mystery free was for because 9 ouutta ten times the commentators are left in the lurch… guessing?? just as much as the ump/s tend to do at times.

Still no accountability by the AFL with 'explaining certain decisions' (weak soft frees) which look exactly the same as another non-decision either happen in the same game or other games. It's a lottery really.

Showing players singing club songs after a win, and for that matter the club songs - just outdated.

The term 'Superstar' is bandied about with regularity, surely there is only a handful of genuine Superstars but hate the saying with a passion. A great of the game would be better but then it takes more effort as its 5 words.

Never understood the running out to smash through a paper banner.

The amount of interchanges should be limited or even just have substitutes, don't know the current amount but having 100+ is ridiculous.

The way goal umpires smile when they signal a goal

Just on this, does anyone know when goal umpires started acting more professional? Looking at vision back in the day, the goal umpires would signal a goal with real flair, plus they could do it almost anywhere behind the goal posts. Now, it has to be straight, rigid and they have to be directly in between the goal posts.

How would this work in practice though?

You'll either dramatically lower set shot accuracy by rushing players or alternatively give teams trying to slow the game down forever to hold the ball and play keep away.

The current system is odd but it works

I'd give everybody ten seconds, perhaps it may lead to inaccuracy but it may also lead to clubs practising this skill more than they currently do. I found in my footballing history that having more time for shots on goal allowed me to think about factors (like the wind) that can lead to placing pressure on yourself. It's the lack of consistency for the same skill across the ground that riles me.

Agree with the term Superstar - everything else, no.

but its a WHITE WHITE world. plus people would just complain like they do with women commentators. imagine how messy it'll be, really

I dont think people had problems with it being a woman commentator (well I didnt anyway), it was just that Underwood's voice was so grating it made me want to puke.

No doubt that shes a very good journo, and actually what she says in commentary is fine.
She just doesn't have a voice for it unfortunately.

banners, think they suck, dont need.

2nd minor thing/ maybe major thing. i think players should be able to put whatever they want into their body to help them recover quicker. not to give them a performance advantage getting bigger or faster but to recover quicker and reduce major injuries

Love the first one, banners are stupid.

Second one is very tough, because theres a mega fine line between recovering quicker and being performance enhancing. They could be considered the same thing.

its not like a ton of the players wouldn't be using some sort of recovery drug already. its more about education of players on what to use and how to use it, make the drugs come from an AFL drugs office before ticked off if thats what it takes. I'm just sick of seeing players playing with injuries and it causing further injuries (this esp happens in the NFL with discussions about this starting up now). everyone wants the best product and this would bring it

Possibly been mentioned in the 10 pages since I last looked at this thread, but banners that don't tear properly any more annoy me.

I mean, I realise there's some time and effort that goes into making a banner from scratch week to week (possibly an environmental impact too), but mostly this is done by the cheer squad footy fanatics who, and lets be fair to these fine fellows and fellow-ettes, shouldn't really mix with the rest of normal society during non-football watching hours anyway. Making banners keeps them out of trouble.

When's the last time we saw a banner take out a player as they ran onto the field by coat-hangering him with a rebellious piece of tissue paper and surprise double taping? There could be minutes of YouTube hilarity with highlights of that alone.

Now a player kicks a footy into the banner and it bounces back into their arms.

Speaking of banners, what annoys me is players not willing to touch them.

Surely you tear the thing as forceful as possible.

You can't really these days, that's the problem.

They use the same banner week after week and just make some adjustments to the text. Hence the velcro doorway down the middle, now you're supposed to peel that apart respectfully and allow your fellow combatants through before sealing it up behind you. Manners and all that.
