Missing DOB.

I don't believe any of these 4 had yet been solved on the other 'Inaccuracies Thread'

1. "Dick" Richard James Casey
Born between 25/5/1881 and 8/7/1881. Died aged 16/4/1919. Age 37 (Flu)
Whilst Col has got born between 25-5-1881 and 8-7-1881, I've actually got in my remarks born between 17-4-1881 and 9-19-1881
I did a heap of research on him years ago, and don't know where those notes are now - but seem to recall an adopted name, that could have been part of the puzzle - it may be Carrick, but again, not sure.

2. Bill J. Ahern (no birthdate or death date)
The man who was originally in our records, was born 24-6-1873 but (as was pointed out to us) this one died in NSW as a youngster,so not the right one.
In some reports of the match - Round 1- 1897, his name is spelt as Ahearn.
J. may or may not be the correct second initial. He was definitely at Preston in 1893, we've seen that in newspaper reports. He is not of course to be confused with WilliamThomas Ahern, StK 1897, born 25-6-1874, died 27-1-1920.
Steve Williamson who has been doing a lot of recent research on him think he may have been born in Ireland.

3.
"Bill" William Hennington
Born between 5/11/1891 and 29/4/1892. Died 11/7/1964
Such a distinctive name but it never seemed to show up

4. "Jim"
James Schellnack
Born between 25/5/1879 and 9/1/1880. Died 24/5/1968
I've often felt he was in the Records somewhere!, but with a very different spelling.

EDIT 1: I transcribed Schellnack's name incorrectly, leaving out the first c.
EDIT 2: Stephen Rodgers requested any updates/changes we come across, to collate them and then I'll submit to him at end of season - as he is pretty swamped at the moment. I'll ensure the correct people are credited with the research (if they so wished to be named).

Rhett.

Okay folks.

According to the Ryerson Index ( good resource) Patrick Valentine Bourke died Melbourne 23.9.2005 with a notice in the HS 26.9.2005

Desmond 'Des' Clyde Bell (b: 23.5.1923) (Melb 1946-1948). Original club Creswick. * WW2. Army There is on Ryerson a Desmond ClIVe Bell 89 died Sep 2011 in Lidcombe NSW. Death notice SMH 3.9.011 (only offered as a possibility)

Ronald "Ron" Arthur Bickley (b: 21/10/1926| (Fitz 1949-1951). Original club University Blacks. *
If someone heads into the archives they may wish to search the notice for a Shirley Phyllis Bickley wife of Ronald Arthur Bickley from this notice of their marriage https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/123230663/ and see if Ron pre-deceases her . That will give a searchable target. Ryerson indicates Shirley passed away 10.8.2011 and a notice placed in the HS 15.8.2011.

Ronald is NOT noted in Ryerson indicating he may still be alive

Ted married Theresa Alice Rule in 1937 and there are records of both in Oxley on the 1959 Queensland Electoral rolls. FindMyPast has a funeral notice for a Teresa Alice for 1978. MyHeritage suggests Edward passed in 1994. (tbc)

Edit: added. Confirmed the bolded
1978 B85947 Teresa Alice Brewis James Rule Alice Duncan

This information corresponds to Vic BDM records. Queensland BDM Death records only go to 1988. Other sources need to be checked to confirm the death of Ted

The World War Two nominal roll does include a Desmond Clive Bell who was born in Sydney in October 1921
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/Veteran.aspx?serviceId=A&veteranId=263107

so I suspect the SMH notice in Sept 2011 is for him rather than the VFL footballer.

Seems this could be M.L. Bolger http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article8160202 to narrow any searching

Thank you ! That second initial helped a lot - have now found him, but suspect we should ask for surname to be shown as Bulger, not Bolger.

Mervyn Leslie Lawrence Bulger d 16 Sep 1993, buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia
https://www.centennialpark.org/memorial-search/?surname=bulger&first=mervyn

Person of same names and with birthdate of 14 June 1919 is listed on WW2 nominal roll
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/Veteran.aspx?serviceId=R&veteranId=890791

Electoral rolls via Ancestry show Bolger spelling very very rare, but Bulger spelling more common,
including people of that name living at Broken Hill where player was born.

According to this post on FootyAlmanac Ron was still alive in 2016. There may also be an opportunity to get in touch with the original comment maker.

Hi! My father is Ronald Bickley who played 28 games for Fitzroy 1949-51and is still alive and well at 89 years old. I wonder if he is the oldest surviving VFL player?

Third batch of Missing DOD players:

Henry "Harry" John Brown (b:16/10/1903 ) (StKilda - 1927). Original club: Caulfield.
Samuel Otto John Buck (b: 15/11/1876) (Carlton 1897) Original Club: Royal Park Crescent. Blueseum bio: http://www.blueseum.org/Otto+Buck
Alfred Joseph Callick (b: 14/8/1925) (Sth Melb 143, 1946-1950) WW2 Army. Original Club: South Colts. *may still be living
Joe Canavan (b 4/11/1880) (Sth Melb 1903) Original Club: South Bendigo

Joe Canavan (b 4/11/1880) (Sth Melb 1903) Original Club: South Bendigo
I love the puzzle of genealogy. Though it frustrates the hell out of me at times .

Joseph and his wife Jane had 3 children and only 1 surviving. Leo Joseph. Who married and died under the Canavan-Webster name. Why is the 1st question. 2 answers. Death and remarriage or divorce and remarriage while the child is young. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article206939318 Divorce. But this gives a further clue ' Joseph is assumed to be in Adelaide'' if we take that 1920 article at face value then is this Joe http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article188776982

WIRRABARA.
At the Wirrabara Magistrates' Court on the 16th inst., before Mr. Henry Hunt, J.P-, Joseph Canavan was charged, on the information of M.C. Kite, with drunkenness

So you keep looking in different locations, only to end up back in Victoria and Dan Minogue of all people. Dan was coached by Joe and remembered him fondly. An interesting piece is that Joe ( and Dan) worked in the Mines. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article180835561

Now the next is only a suggestion based on possibilities but a death of a man named Joseph Canavan , drowned, in 1924 near Cal Lal which is actually in NSW but close to Loxton SA and Wentworth NSW. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article45632458

Look up NSW BDM and an odd thing is noticed. There is a death of a Canavan in the Wentworth district in 1924. But it is a Steph Canavan. But , BUT the parents are listed as Robert and Sarah. The same parents names listed on Josephs birth details.
CANAVAN STEPH 3907/1924 Father: ROBERT Mother:SARAH Dist: WENTWORTH

If this was me I would be getting a Pen out or purchasing the death cert.

What say you?

Yes indeed, could still be alive.

Alfred Joseph shows up in earlier electoral rolls listed in the Malvern area, and there is an AJ Callick still listed in phone books as being in East Malvern.

Cannot find any ref to a newspaper death notice, nor a cemetery burial either.

An old one is Henry "Tracker" Young - has always been listed as born on 18 May 1873 but was actually born 16 May 1873. I've updated Wikipedia and AFL Tables but everywhere else still has 18 May. Newspaper notice is linked on Wiki page - his father was Samuel Young and he was the only Young with a birth registered in Geelong in 1873.

Thanks for raising that as a point to clarify.
Do you have a newspaper notice or some such evidence to help confirm the statement ?
He once said it in an interview, maybe on the Freo website. He wore 22 at the Dees as he's born on the 22nd in actuality.

Or maybe he was born on the 23rd not the 22nd, and just wore 22 for some random reason...

Second batch of Missing DOD for players
* = they could very still be living
Desmond 'Des' Clyde Bell (b: 23.5.1923) (Melb 1946-1948). Original club Creswick. * WW2. Army
Strongly suspect Des is still with us.
In 1946 he got engaged to Nina Helen Dora Thomson (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article22318424) and they subsequently married.
In 1970 they bought land in Ocean Grove and title transferred to him in Feb 1995 following her death.
As at Jan 2016 he was still the land owner... as can be seen if you search for Desmond in https://geelonganddistrict.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/oglotssectc160125.pdf
EDIT: I should have checked - the block (39 Osborne St) is currently listed for sale...
