Mod. Notice Moderation of the WCE Board - Request for Feedback

It’s been quite some time since we’ve opened up a thread for some direct feedback on the moderation of this board. But since Biggie and HoneyBadger35 as the most recently appointed mods here are nearing their 5th anniversary it seems time to do so

We’re open to any feedback but whilst constructive criticism is welcome, mod bashing or abuse is not, so please keep views respectful. Or at least partially

Without trying to steer debate in a particular direction, these are some of the issues I am keen on getting poster’s views on :

• Derailment of threads with prolonged circular arguments between two or more posters
• Extensive off topic posting, often times referred to as shit posting, in threads - something that led to the creation of the ultimately unpopular dump thread
• Posters who repeatedly, and sometimes exclusively, post about the same topic without adding anything new to their argument
• How welcome outside (non-WCE supporters) posters should be made to feel on our board, especially if their views whilst arguably accurate are critical of the club or players

These are suggestions only and there may be other issues you have that you are welcome to raise

For the record, during my 7+ years in this stint as a mod here and my time previous, the moderation of this board has purposely been relaxed, for want of a better word. Posters are given a fair bit of leeway to express their views as robustly as they feel fit and whether that posting is on topic or not

As for outside posters coming onto this board, they are welcome to do so provided they stay within the rules, even when their posts don’t have universal agreement from regular posters

This is your opportunity to have your say in an open forum to ask for a change in approach or to back the way this board has been moderated since before larrikin was appointed 15 odd years ago

But again, please remember, constructive criticism and not abuse

Thanks

Keys
You guys do a great job. You all know how much rope to give and when to take control. No changes required. Thank you all for your efforts.

Wow! Actually asking for feedback in an open chat forum, that’s really old school and awesome, like having a bbq and a few beers after work on a Friday used to be.
Nowadays it’s survey monkey, or email your anonymous feedback forms through.
A few posters piss me off, and I’m sure I piss them off too. Which is life.
You do a great job, thank you.

Mostly positive moderation.

Some of the boardism's do get tiring though, especially where some threads (contracts thread, for example) have at times a dozen pages worth of discussion contributed each day, we really don't need Gunston/Bock/Jack Watts references thrown in like they're going to spontaneously become funny when they haven't been for the last decade.

Weird question for the mods: do board-wide admins acknowledge our (seemingly) liberal approach compared to others? Do they care one way or another?

As an ex-moderator of this site I can tell you there's obviously a mods only board, I've seen Chief and other admins ask the Freo mods "why can't you be more like the Eagles board?" on a number of occasions and the push back and tantrums in reaction from the Cockburn mods gets pretty intense.

Could be worse: at least they found some that can read.

Lach72 actually resigned as a Freo mod after one of the said discussions. I have screenshots of the exchange where he quit that I read-over whenever I'm having a shitty day.

Having lived in Melbourne for over a decade, I actually enjoy the banter and input from opposition supporters. So the approach to allowing decent posters on our board is fine by me. But I am not interested in sheet stirrers and smart @rses. I actual enjoy inputs and information of value. Backing this up, I have a number of conversations with opposition posters that are informative and sharing information/views. I also am active on the open forum for areas of specific interest.

I also lived in London for a few years and attended many EPL and CL games at Highbury and the Emirates Stadium. The biggest regret was that the spectators at the ground (like Optus) are so one sided it is less interesting. My favourite games are when you have a balanced crowd and input from both sides. It becomes far more interesting like a a good football discussion should be.

Back on topic. During trade period, the mods need to be faster getting rid of the idiots quickly. On the whole it works well and they do a good job but give less rope for the idiots that come fishing.

On our boards, there is one Qld supporter that has worn out his welcome. His pretext of constantly being on our board sounded plausible to start off with and he was tolerable. Hell, I even had some conversations with him. It did not take me long to realised he was full of sh1te. He pretends to be in the know, states he watches games (but only on TV) and makes out as if he is on the inside. FFS - I think some of our posters have fallen for his input. Interesting that his virtual strutting has become more evident as his team have played in successive GF's. His come backs and "what did I say" and "we won't be able to tell until they are 25" excuses just derail the discussion. Having put up with his passive aggressive, a number of us have had enough. It is the cumulative that pisses people off and he often derails the thread (yes, I realise he is not the only one but it feels worse coming from someone not invested in the club).

I thought it was just me but after conversing with some of the more informed posers, it became evident that this feeling is more common amongst the posters I respect.

While he and his passive aggressiveness is tolerated by the mods, a few of us have acted and set up conversations with people invited to join on topics of draft, list deficiencies and U18 talent. This means we have much less content but the content is rich and informative (especially since there is less to talk about in the off season right now). It is not about agreeing with each other, but hearing different perspectives. I put it to Keys that we will stay away until the kent is removed. Simple. Kind of like if you go to a game and a supporter is getting to you for whatever reason, move away to another seat (unless it is Optus and sold out).

Anyway, you ask for input and I am responding. You will of noticed a number of regular posters are not active on the contracts/list/draft thread as they feel similar to me. We did not like listening to the kent and have done something about it.

If someone wants to sheet stir or be passive aggressive to oppo supporters, feel free to go to the open forums that are not club specific. There are some damn good posters there as well as some donkeys and kents. Easier to go in and out of threads. It is a pity he has alienated posters and reduced the enjoyment of my own club's threads.

PS
One possible improvement is to narrow the topic and look at splitting the biggest thread. It covers contract, draft trade and list. It is popular but seems to be a catch all. The conversation groups have been split into more focussed topics and is working better. I would suggest the following splits: 1) Trade and FA targets for us to target and our players at risk, 2) Draft intel and what the U18 talent is looking like (incl NGA FS) and what to do with our picks, 3) Contracts and list management decisions, and 4) Gaps in our list and how to cover them. (eg the glaring weakness in our developing midfield evident since 2016).

Our board is better than most others, good mix of humour and seriousness unlike others cough carlton cough. I also don't mind being more tolerant of oppo supporters as it usually means we get to take the piss out of them.

Interesting typo. At least I assume it’s a typo, seems a harsh observation otherwise

Subliminal perhaps :)

I feel the same about said poster - not a big of fan of what they contribute but for whatever reason there's a few that enjoy what he brings (shit people like spearmint milk and I'll never understand that for as long as I live). In the end I rarely read his posts anymore, stopped a while back when he had a meltdown for calling him Ron Weasly. However, seems a shame we miss out on your content coz of it as I do value the information you share, I think you should just use the ignore button and/or not engage them, as the board is poorer for not having your input.

I think this is one of the better moderated boards. No major issues. And every board gets opposition trolls. We just get to play with them for longer before they are shown the door. :thumbsu: ;)

I don't want our board to become like several others that basically quash any reasonable views from opposition posters.

Feel where the limit should be raised is allowing opposition posters to continually repeat themselves when it is quite clear their view is not shared and has been proven to be flawed. Continually reminding us about advantages their team has been gifted by the AFL is also a red flag.

It then just becomes a long drawn out very subtle troll.

The easy answer is the ignore button. :thumbsu:

I second all of this. AsterixTheGaul we'd be poorer for your absence. Your borderline mania about King Nissie I last year was some of my favourite content on here in years 😁

As someone who doesn't really frequent the boards of other clubs, I was always curious why Oppo supporters came across as a little sheepish and apologetic when posting here.
But it makes sense based on what's being said here as they're probably used to getting banned from other boards.
