Watching the Dees V Blues tonight have to say Moloney played well but… I don’t he,s worth a First round pick.
Look , no doubt he’s talented. Good to great kick, big bodied and likes contact. He is not nimble however and I thought he to often tried to carry the ball out of pack. I think the Cats got P12 him and I think they got value.
In the long run I think Ottens will be a win ,even in short run if he can continue to kick 4 a game.King and Ottens are about the same age and the two together should enable them both to get an extra 2 years out of their battered bodies, ensuring we have two quality big guys for the next 5 years plus and thats worth Moloney and the kid Patterson that Richmond took with P16 and probably more.
Dont get me wrong , I love the way Bemmer plays, I just dont think hes a franchise player.King and Ottens both are. Game over

Agreed. We won't miss him as much as many think.

His long kicking was an asset but we can cover that with Koula who I believe is as penetrating kick as Beemer was.
Agreed, if Koula get game time he can be as damaging as moloney

Was at the game, whilst he wasn't superb tonight, i still think we will miss him greatly.

I tend to agree. IMO, it will be the 'breaking the group' factor that may hurt Geelong the most. Alot of talk has been had the last few years about maintaining 'this group' and then the coaching staff, (rightly) agreed to cut one from the herd to better the team.

Yeah, i'm not buying that theory, in all honestly.

I find it to be meritorious to an extent, in sense that, the players will now feel more pressure to perform week in, week out. But, so they should. We are a team pressing for a Premiership.

I just think the whole, Prismall will do this, Koula will do that etc is such an irrelevant argument. There's no guarantee, like people are alluding to, that these type of players will mature into a similar sort of footballer as Moloney is.

And even so, if we recruited Prismall as a 'replacement' for Tweek, then isn't that sufficient enough evidence to suggest his departure created a hole in the midfield?

5th-Stringer maybe, but gun he is also, in my opinion.

Believe me the Cat's did very well to get this trade. The only way to get a 6'8" player of Otten's ability would be to have a 1st or 2nd draft pick which we have never been crap enough to have. A realistic trade would have been our first pick (16) plus an on traded pick from 4 to 6. Everything fell into the Cat's place in the trade period. 1. Otten's preferred club was Geelong. 2.The 2 other suitors North picked up Thompson and Sydney picked up Jolly. 3. Melbourne lost Thompson to Adelaide and were desperate for a strong bodied mid-fielder. Maloney is a precocious talent, tough, runs straight, penetrating kick but had deficiencies in wasn't accountable and didn't always play to team rules. His realistic value was a pick in the range of 16-20.
Richmond's bargaining power was shot to pieces and the Cat's secured an absolute bargain. Name a player at 6'8" with Ottens talent that we could have picked up in recent drafts? They are like hen's teeth. Would do this trade 100 times out of 100. Good midfielder's are fairly easy to replace, but tell me where to find a talented giant later in the draft? While no one can predict the future the Cat's have done sensationally well with this deal.

Agree with pretty much all that's said so far. I'd only add that the trade was a risk we absolutely HAD to take. Imagine if we'd passed up this chance and played a season with Playfair and Kingsley as key forwards! We are still over-endowed with quality young midfielders which, don't get me wrong, is a good thing but Moloney was expendible and Ruckman/forwards of Ottens quality don't come around too often.

Very True. At last we had name player wanting to come to Geelong. We had to make the deal happen. I wish Brent all the best, (not against of course) but I stand the Cats choice. Remember , It was the Cats who gave him a chance in the first place , sort of like Betts at Carlton. He could have easily been amonst the many players that one see's playing at lesser levels, always looking like a guys who could have made it if given that chance.

players like Moloney are a dime a dozen and although he was good we can replace him. But players like Ottens dont come around to often hence more needed than a Moloney type.

Geez I don't know about this. I knew you guys would get excited about the big donut but have you all forgotten how he's been playing since 2001? Doesn't seem to enjoy the physical stuff too much anymore and his head always seems to be elsewhere. Maybe that will change down at Geelong but if I had to guess I'd say you'll probably end up hating the guy for his total lack of intensity. Oh and his mum's a psycho.

Moloney seems to have a big heart and those types of players are also valuable for what they bring to the team. Time will tell I suppose.

You're right, Ottens hasn't done much since 2001 but it isn't easy playing in a rabble of a team. He will benefit from playing in a professional unit with quality players around him.

Maybe, but I'm not convinced. You learn a lot about players when your side is on the bottom and what I learnt about this guy is he lacks heart. He completely threw in the towel when the going got tough and although he has talent I was honestly not sorry to see him go.

BTW you can slag off Richmond all you want but what I am saying is true. Don't listen though, I really don't care. You will get your hopes up that he will be a gun and then he will shatter your hopes into a thousand pieces when he drops his bundle again ;)

Not so mate. All I was saying was that he'll benefit from playing in a better team. Wasn't really slagging off Richmond - what I said (Richmond = rabble) is fairly well accepted, even by Richmond supporters. He may have lacked heart but it's easy to drop your bundle when your teams down and out for so long. Personally, I don't mind if he's a front-runner type and needs success around him to lift his game.

Also, I think you'll find most Geelong supporters will be happy if Ottens is an equal replacement for Graham. No one is expecting him to win the Coleman.

I just think you guys were better off keeping Moloney and drafting Willits with your first round pick. You would've kept a quality player and you would have also obtained a big bodied ruck/ff (exacttly what you were after) who is ready to step into the AFL and play for 10+ years.
