I still don't understand how it was Dawson that was given the free kick, yet everyone here is saying it was the infringement on Gwilt. On the replay, Mooney pushes Dawson with minimal force just before he tackles Gwilt.

The rule is in place to protect the bloke with the ball, but doesn't factor in players buckling at the knees and looking for a free.
Mooney should have tried to roll him sideways.
However, with that said, ''play-on'' may have been the best call given the stage of the game.

Problem with that is, if you've got their arms pinned, you get suspended for a dangerous tackle.

And if you pull them backwards while you tackle, their torso moves forward, their legs get caught under you, and knee injuries result.

It's dumb as shit.

Said to the umpire, "You just cost us the game, do you know that?"

Umpire should have responded with "No Mooney, you cost yourself the game."

Free kick was there every day of the week.

the problem is it doesnt get paid every day of the week, goose.

if it happens 30 times a game, it might get paid 4 or 5. ablett got pushed in the back by goddard in the centre square in the second quarter, that got left alone...so obviously they dont get paid every day of the week..

its inconsistant and cost a team a win

The sooner umpires officiate with common sense and the word 'interpretation' is replaced with 'rule' again, the better our game will be.

This!!

I've been saying it for years, what the **** is an interpretation?

You have rules, simple as that, you don't change them on a weekly or fortnightly basis!!

Seriously, that was a free kick.

It's been that way for 5 or more years.

Last forty that i can remember!!.
You cant land on someones back,it just opens a whole ugly can of worms if those were overlooked.

He rode him into the ground landing on the back. Free kick all year.

Now lets talk about the rule which states that if you duck your head in a contest, head high contact is not payed. Joel Selwood and Stevie J are presenting a seminar on it tommorow morning. Free BBQ for Cats fans when you present your sore loser memberships.

So what you're saying is you don't know what the rule says? I'm not debating whether that free kick has been paid all year. Personally I think it's one of the most inconsistently handled free kick.

The guy I quoted said to read the rulebook so I assume he has. I want him to point out what section of the rules cleary defines that what Mooney did is a "push in the back" given it's not arguable.

That stokes free kick for high was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse a call than the Mooney one. All cats fans are as soft as there players.

Your kicking cost you the game mate.
Selwood free not there but paid,Stokes free not there but paid:thumbsdown:
Quit trying to blame that decision,it should have been paid and 2 50's for the Ling kick and Whingey Mooney's hissy fit, dusted:thumbsu:

You are wrong. It gets paid every day of the week. You ride them into the ground you get pinged.

The Ablett-Goddard incident was a tangle of legs and Ablett falling over. Don't make things up to support your weak argument.

I agree that when the ump puts the whistle away it makes for a better game but you CANNOT pick and choose when to pay a free.

While I still don't think it was free anyway, that's the problem in a last quarter like that where far worse decisions were called play on, like when Varcoe got tackled before taking possession and they let it go which resulted in the Schneider goal.

Personally I cant get over people saying it should have been play on... I for one, think the umpires have been terrible for the last 5 years and even made bad calls throughout the night, but this one was spot on, as Mooney both cannoned into his back, and then jumped on it!

The slow motion replay shows this clear as day, and yes Mooney had plenty of other options, like wrapping his arms around Gwilts, and after tightening, then bringing him down vertically on the spot, whilst lunging his own body to either side of Gwilt, and if he feels Gwilt moving forward, then all he had to do was let go. Or lunge forward to either side of him and whilst in the air, twist him with the tackle. Not by being lazy/stupid by doing a wrestlers spear tackle into his back and then jumping DIRECTLY onto it.

Whilst the umpire may have erred in making the call for the initial contact (50/50) the fact that Mooney also then fell directly into his back on the ground made it blatantly obvious, and only your hatred of umpires (which I share) or wishing for a different outcome to the game is not letting you see past it.

weak as piss free kick. Gwilt was jumping forward when he was trying to dish off that handball. and how that Gilbert deliberate out of bounds wasnt paid ill never know.

i wouldnt call that a confidence building win after giving away a 33 point lead in the 3rd.

The problem with the free is the umpires don't always pay such frees. It is one of the big problems in modern AFL - interpretations are inconsistent.

Not to mention the fact that this type of in-the-back is a joke.
