Mooney and that FREE

I know he has to put on a media face but ling just said:

"Dissapointing it came down to a free that could of gone either way, but it was more our work in the first half that let us down"
and
"Havent had a chance to have a look at it but its not the point of the game we should be dissapointed in"

Spot on Lingy

If only Cats supporters had a fraction of Ling's perspective.

Absolute circus here tonight.

Re: Cam Mooney tells it how it is!!!

Drilled him in the back? Hardly. You could quite easily see that Mooney attempted to tackle him onto his side, and I think he disguised this well enough. Even Ross Lyon admitted he wasn't sure it'd be paid as they hadn't been all night, which is why and many others are angry at the decision.

Clearly rode him in the back, it's not even debatable.

As if Geelong can complain about free kicks with the biggest head diver in the game on their team, who incidentally was playing for head diver frees the entire second half

That was the best ending to the game. The premature celebrations and the Mooney rage was hilarious, and the fact that it was clearly not a free made it even funnier.

Wouldn't be a finals series without the Saints getting handed a game by the umps!

that free is paid every day of the week. You cant land on a bloke's back and not give away a free kick.

I thought the rule was that you couldn't push a player in the back. Cam Mooney didn't push him, momentum took him forward in the tackle and unfortunatly landed in his back. This is one of the most frustrating rules in the book. It happens too often these days that players throw themselves forward. All players are doing it to milk frees, which is where the umpire must not react and award good tackles.

For all intents and purposes, I thought it was a good tackle

What the hell are you talking about?

As far as I can tell, the majority of people in this thread who disagree with the decision are neutral supporters.

Id like to call an American styled ballot recount on this please.

Re: Cam Mooney tells it how it is!!!

Umpire was very lucky. Called it for holding the man after the tackle which it clearly was not. Fortunately for him it was a clear in the back.

Mooney fell straight into his back, as shown from a second angle.
Did he call it holding the man? That makes the decision an even bigger farce.

It should've been holding the ball. Gwilt threw it before the "in the back" occurred.

Should it have been paid?

Yes.

Is the 'interpretation' completely ****ing moronic?

Definitely.

A player falling forward, or being carried forward via their own momentum, should not receive a free as a result.

Spot on champ.

Correct decision, but crap rule.

Don't blame the umpire, Blame the rules commity.
It's called in the back not on the back. 95% of frees are on the back. In the back only occurs when great force is applied directly in a players back or if a knee is put into a players back. Neither occur very often. However based on the idiots who run the AFL (the ones who suggested changing the post rule) this rule will not be changed but made even softer. Footy is a physical sport and needs to go back that way it was.

Spot on buddy.

Most people on here are saying it is the right decision, but on what basis? Where is the rule / interpretation to say how this is supposed to be applied. There isn't one, so what we do is go on what we have seen paid before from umpires which themselves are making assumptions on what they have seen before.

Re: Cam Mooney tells it how it is!!!

It was possibly there, but gee in a final, where it is so close and similar incidents have been let go all game, well i'd rather see that one let go.

I reckon the Cats can feel a little robbed.

What if that happened against Collingwood and the goal was allowed? Don't tell me you would be sitting there saying "yeah that clearly fell in his back, but you know what i dont care because its a final"
It was clearly a free kick.
