Letter from the President: Brand research project

President Dave Barham provides an update on the club's brand research project.
By essendonfc.com.au - 1 hr ago

To all our Fans and Members,

The Essendon Football Club has a proud history as one of the oldest clubs in the AFL and we have a strong recognisable brand.

We are conducting a preliminary research project which centres around the Essendon brand and its elements.

The research project is in its early phase. Members and supporters have been and will continue to be canvassed as part of this process, in addition to the engagement of multiple Essendon Football Club stakeholders.

We have a proud history of more than 150 years and a deep connection to our members and supporters. This is and will always be respected and embraced.

There is no immediate action to change the club logo or any elements of the club brand. This is a longer-term project with significant work to be completed.

We proudly recognise that our future legacy begins with our proud history.

We will always be called the Bombers.

- Dave Barham

Nope the poll isn't from 2008 or you think you're in the majority not wanting a change?
I don't want it to change. Maybe refreshed but not changed.

This is probably my favourite refresh, from the graphic design board

I had something like this.
Looks a lot closer in spirit to the original but I think the other version would be better from a branding point of view. I think my only gripe with the current logo is the 'Essendon' wordmark looks quite dated. But otherwise if this is what the club dished up I wouldn't hate it either. I just hope they stick with the Bomber and general shape of the current logo.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The design is excellent, I hate the cartoonish ones like the Tigers, Hawks, etc.

Cheers mate, had these ones as well. Just embraces the red/black a bit more and the one on the right I've put in a stencil font which aims to tie in with the whole aviation/Bomber theme.

I think the logo (and by extension the club as a whole) is long overdue for a rebrand.

I used to consider myself a traditionalist, where I never wanted anything to change, but honestly that mindset is symptomatic of the larger issues at the club.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to get in the habit (as some clubs have) of making changes ever five minutes - because that renders any iconography of the club worthless.

So yes, change the logo, get a proper clash guernsey - think forward.

Can only speak as an outsider but yeah I think ~25 years is high time for a refresh for any club. Collingwood's rebrand in 2018 was quite welcome, was still in essence the same style of logo but looks a lot cleaner now. I'm hoping the same thing happens for Essendon, nothing too major just a new coat of paint and maybe a new font. Because frankly, for a logo that was made in the 90's it's stands up really well. And even the triangle-type shape of the logo gives it a unique point of identity which is great from a branding point of view, you want your logo to be easily distinguished from a mile away.

As for the Clash guernsey, I really like the 2017 one of yours with the two black stripes along the sash I have no idea why they went away from it. From what I understand next year you'll have an inversed sash (similar to Richmond's clash guernsey) which won't look horrible but I feel as though it's a bit lazy to just rip off the Tigers strip.

Richmond own inverse colours?

Of course not, but you'd think being the only two clubs with the sash design you'd want to at least have a couple points of difference if you could help it
Why?

You dont think the predominantly red jumper is a point of difference from the predominantly yellow jumper?

eh I think it's a simple design that works well. Our home jumpers are identical aside from the colours, no reason the clash jumpers shouldn't be too. It's not like they'll get confused for one-another.

Personally I'd like to see them use the Indigenous round jumper for the away jumper (we've had a few good red ones) but for some reason AFL clubs don't want to do that.

$$$

Surely no one is buying our atrocity of an away jumper though? We'd sell way more if it was the Dreamtime design being used
We already sell both. It's simple, more designs = more product to sell.

I still think a propeller motif would hold the tension of continuity of brand identity whilst softening what could be deemed aggressive.

Font at the top (current font stinks), three blade propeller underneath, all in a neat equilateral, upside down triangle.

Let's go old timey

I'd just like an Essendon hat that doesn't have our shit logo front and centre.

We did years ago, then stopped.
I settled for this one earlier in the year as I got tired of waiting for one without that awful concept of the current logo with the font cut off the top.

Maybe I'm coming at it more from an aesthetic standpoint but yeah I agree it would work well, but I just would think something along the lines of the 2017 clash would work/look just as well if not better and be a nice point of difference. I'm pretty sure the reason it wasn't done in the past was something in the club constitution? Although seems like they've somehow ironed that out now going into next year.

Yep from memory the club constitution said it must be a red sash, so the club did all these other ideas that never really worked well instead of just changing the constitution to allow a black sash on red.

I’d be perfectly happy with a reversed jumper, practical since it’s very different to our home jumper, and still very obviously ‘Essendon’
