have to admit though.. huddo's thirteeeeeeeeen was pretty good.

It was the perfect commentary for the moment, was just actual excitement and no cliched fake emotion. And considering I'm a North supporter complimenting that particular part of commentary...

I hate it when the commentators discuss how one team should get back into the game. It's always I'd give him a run in the midfield or change one single player around...don't think that stops your whole team being beaten easily! Would be nice to hear more from the 'special comments commentators' about stuff like game plan changes, how to counteract the other team, how they could change up at stoppages etc.

Commentators calling coaches and players by their nicknames. Not really a cliche but I cannot stand it. Roos, Russell, Taylor, Darcy being the worst culprits.

Steve Johnson being called Stevie J makes me want to vomit.

Does my head in as well. "Daisy" Thomas is another particularly cringeworthy one. It just sounds so unprofessional and ridiculous. Even something like "Scotty" instead of "Scott" annoys me. Just call the players/coaches by their name, it can't be that hard. Why the need for the over-the-top "blokeyness"?

"Lowers the eyes" (Danny Frawley in particular) and "where are they at" seem to come up all the time as well.

Dwayne Russell: "That is GOLD CLASS!" and "In the shadows of half-time".

Also commentators saying "And he's off!" or similar as soon as an Aboriginal player takes a step with the ball, assuming that being Aboriginal he's an excellent sprinter, and is going to run the length of the field.

Can't stand when they say catch...

Last year, foxtel had Nathan Thompson and Tristan Foenander fill in during the olympics, can't believe they went back to the same old.

Called the games, original concept I know.

*ball is defensively kicked out of the danger zone*
dwayne "(player) makes it somebody else's problem"
just lack of footy knowledge from a man who is paid to watch the game. mr russell, you are a ********

I just wish they'd shut up for a while. I know Premier League matches generally experience greater lulls than AFL games, but the commentary is such that it allows the play to speak for itself. It's minimalist, commentators chime in when something needs to be said, the excitement exists when there is something to be excited about... Less is more and that applies to commentary as well.

In the AFL we have a bunch of commentators all trying to one up eachother with their stupid catchphrases and at times nonsensical expressions, 2 aptly named "special" commentators who interject with irrelevant information just to justify them being on the commentary team, a boundary rider giving us a more than likely incorrect diagnosis of an injury and nutters like Kirky asking nonsensical questions to players and coaches after smoking ten blunts throughout the course of the match... It's just so over the top and grating. Not to mention the commentators always seem to need to force their own opinions down our throats instead of allowing the viewer to come to their own conclusions, I often come home from the football, watch the replay on TV and the commentators are completely out of touch with what is actually going on in the game. They seem too pre-occupied trying to think of something clever to say or remembering one of their scripted lines that they actually forget that their role is to actually offer some kind of insight.

Most times I watch the footy I just wish I could turn the commentary off and just hear the crowd noises. I remember in one game last year, I can't remember which but the commentators were switched off and the crowd noises were the only things you could hear, including one supporter close to one of the mics swearing his head off at the umpires and the group of supporters around him. I think his commentary was the most enjoyable all season, at the very least it wasn't in any way contrived and it gave you a sense of real atmosphere.

Not a cliche, but McAvaney says "off a step" every thirty seconds. Drives me mad. I'm usually able to ignore the commentary (when the TV's not on mute, which is often, thanks mostly to Brian Taylor), but that forces me to listen. It's like getting poked in the brain.

David Scwharz entire career.

Not only cliched but boring.

Must be the most stupid person in footy.
I mean when your Career highlight is being sucked in by hodge podge fev trophies on ebay your a first class moron.
